Book excerpt: This introductory text is devoted to exposing the underlying nature of price formation in financial markets as a predominantly sociological phenomenon that relates individual decision-making to emergent and co-evolving social and financial structures. Two different levels of this sociological influence are considered: First, we examine how price formation results from the social dynamics of interacting individuals, where interaction occurs either through the price or by direct communication. Then the same processes are revisited and examined at the level of larger groups of individuals. In this book, models of both levels of socio-finance are presented, and it is shown, in particular, how complexity theory provides the conceptual and methodological tools needed to understand and describe such phenomena. Accordingly, readers are first given a broad introduction to the standard economic theory of rational financial markets and will come to understand its shortcomings with the help of concrete examples. Complexity theory is then introduced in order to properly account for behavioral decision-making and match the observed market dynamics. This book is conceived as a primer for newcomers to the field, as well as for practitioners seeking new insights into the field of complexity science applied to socio-economic systems in general, and financial markets and price formation in particular.

Book excerpt: Social Finance: An Introduction to the Future of Finance provides an engaging, accessible overview of the relatively new field of social finance, blending insights from finance, corporate social responsibility, and social entrepreneurship. It highlights the key challenges facing social finance, while also laying out its basics and showcasing its vast opportunities. In addition to the foundation and history of social finance, topics covered include microfinance, ESGs, social impact bonds, crowdfunding, and banking. Case studies are peppered throughout, and a balance of global examples and perspectives are included. Each chapter contains digestible information and insights on the respective topic. Because this is an introductory book, there is a glossary explaining key terms for readers without a background in the subject. This will be a valuable text for students of finance, investment, social entrepreneurship, social innovation, and related areas, as well as anyone seeking to dive into the intersection of finance and social impact. It will also be useful to researchers, professionals, and policy-makers interested in social finance. Andreas Andrikopoulos, author of "The Essentials of Social Finance" "This is a text that outlines the essential features of social finance. Written with enthusiasm and vision, this text highlights the necessity of social change, delineates a paradigm shift in the financial services industry, and endorses the pursuit of sustainability as a catalyst for environmental resilience" Harrison Martindale, Educational and Finance Lead at Bumper Investing "Social Finance: An Introduction to the Future Of Finance builds the necessary foundation every young investor needs to understand the impact of their investing style and strategy. Additionally, the text will inspire you to seek the change you want to see in the world through the lens of many perspectives and practices." Dr. Suparna Kure, Co-Director at the Cooperative Food Empowerment Directive This book is my new go-to for financial literacy. It brings vision into the galaxies of young people who are figuring out what financial-adulting means in a world experiencing an elevating climate crisis, multiple financial crises, and the heels of a global pandemic. This book provides a pithy introduction to topics that are typically daunting to folks with an in-depth understanding. The authors left me with a sense of hope for our collective tomorrows-that they lie in the hands of youth leaders like the authors! My only question is, how do we integrate this book into high school curricula?

Book excerpt: COVERS THE FUNDAMENTAL TOPICS IN MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS, AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR A THOROUGH STUDY OF FINANCIAL MARKETS This comprehensive yet accessible book introduces students to financial markets and delves into more advanced material at a steady pace while providing motivating examples, poignant remarks, counterexamples, ideological clashes, and intuitive traps throughout. Tempered by real-life cases and actual market structures, An Introduction to Financial Markets: A Quantitative Approach accentuates theory through quantitative modeling whenever and wherever necessary. It focuses on the lessons learned from timely subject matter such as the impact of the recent subprime mortgage storm, the collapse of LTCM, and the harsh criticism on risk management and innovative finance. The book also provides the necessary foundations in stochastic calculus and optimization, alongside financial modeling concepts that are illustrated with relevant and hands-on examples. An Introduction to Financial Markets: A Quantitative Approach starts with a complete overview of the subject matter. It then moves on to sections covering fixed income assets, equity portfolios, derivatives, and advanced optimization models. This book’s balanced and broad view of the state-of-the-art in financial decision-making helps provide readers with all the background and modeling tools needed to make “honest money” and, in the process, to become a sound professional. Stresses that gut feelings are not always sufficient and that “critical thinking” and real world applications are appropriate when dealing with complex social systems involving multiple players with conflicting incentives Features a related website that contains a solution manual for end-of-chapter problems Written in a modular style for tailored classroom use Bridges a gap for business and engineering students who are familiar with the problems involved, but are less familiar with the methodologies needed to make smart decisions An Introduction to Financial Markets: A Quantitative Approach offers a balance between the need to illustrate mathematics in action and the need to understand the real life context. It is an ideal text for a first course in financial markets or investments for business, economic, statistics, engineering, decision science, and management science students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the use of concepts from statistical physics in the description of financial systems. The authors illustrate the scaling concepts used in probability theory, critical phenomena, and fully developed turbulent fluids. These concepts are then applied to financial time series. The authors also present a stochastic model that displays several of the statistical properties observed in empirical data. Statistical physics concepts such as stochastic dynamics, short- and long-range correlations, self-similarity and scaling permit an understanding of the global behaviour of economic systems without first having to work out a detailed microscopic description of the system. Physicists will find the application of statistical physics concepts to economic systems interesting. Economists and workers in the financial world will find useful the presentation of empirical analysis methods and well-formulated theoretical tools that might help describe systems composed of a huge number of interacting subsystems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long term asset owners and managers, while seeking high risk-adjusted returns and efficiently allocating scarce financial capital to the highest value economic activities, have the essential and formidable role of ensuring the sustainability of return. But generally accepted financial accounting methods are ill-equipped to provide clear signals of the risks and opportunities created by scarce natural and human capital. Hence many investment managers in global financial markets, while performing due diligence on portfolio companies, examine metrics of non-financial performance, especially environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators. Broken into three sections, this book outlines the rationale for and methods used in six areas where financial acumen has been harnessed to the goal of combining monetary return with long run sustainability. The first section offers an introduction to the role of finance in achieving sustainability, and includes an overview of the six areas—sustainable investing, impact investing, decentralized finance, conservation finance, and cleantech finance. The methods section of the book illustrates analytical tools and specialized data sources essential to those interested in increasing the level of social responsibility embedded in economic activity. The applications section describes and differentiates each of the six areas and their roles in advancing specific measures of sustainability.
