Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physical Geography There are good textbooks on physical geography, but there are many teachers and school departments not satisfied with any of them. The author has endeavored to meet the require ments of these teachers as far as such needs could be ascertained. With a subject as broad as physical geography there will al ways be lack of uniformity in the manner of presentation, as well (as in the subject matter. The subject is one which is undergoing many changes, and it is possible that both the teachers and the subject may be ahead of present textbooks in many particulars. Every class in physical geography should have more or less laboratory and field work associated with the textbook. One of the functions of the textbook not the only one, by any means is to serve as a handbook, which the pupil studies as an aid in the interpretation of what he sees in the labora tory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book of Physical Geography Physical Geography as a school subject is concerned properly with those aspects of the Earth which determine or influence the life of man. It necessarily touches other departments of natural knowledge at many points, but in the following lessons the contributory sciences of astronomy, geology, meteorology, and physics are introduced only to the extent necessary to make clear some of the more obvious ways in which human life is affected by natural phenomena. Educationally regarded, Geography is a practical science practical, since it cannot be studied satisfactorily without the personal performance of observational and experimental exercises designed to lead the student to discover for himself fundamental facts and principles a science, in that the data with which it deals can be applied convincingly to man's needs only when their place in an orderly sequence of cause and effect is duly appreciated. The practical exercises set out at the beginning of the various sections of the book have been framed to lead each student to become - within the limits of the course of study - an independent observer able to reason intelligently on the facts he encounters. The descriptive text which follows each set of exercises provides a means of checking the results obtained and the conclusions arrived at by the student. It is urged that, although the descriptive portions of the volume will be found complete as a text-book, much of the educational value of their study will be lost by students who neglect the practical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Geography Of late years the study of Physical Geography has made rapid advances; it forms part of the course of study in higher schools, and has its lectureships and professorships in various universities of the United States and Europe. It is recognized not only as an important study in itself, cultivating the habit of observation and of associating cause and effect, but also as an introduction, or rather an incitement, to the study of various sciences. Physical Geography, a description of Nature in What pertains to the Earth, is eclectic in character. Resting mainly on Geology, and only to a less degree upon Meteor ology, it reaches out to Astronomy, to Mineralogy, to Chemistry, to Biology, and even to History and Political Economy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Physical Geography This book is intended to serve as a general class-book in Physical Geography in schools where geography is taught on modern lines. The requirements of candidates preparing for the Cambridge Senior Local Examination in Physical Geography have been specially kept in view, and the book covers also all that part of the syllabus of the Oxford Senior Local Examination which refers to Physical Geography in the strict sense, as well as the physical part of the syllabus in geography for the London Matriculation, and examinations of similar scope. Among the special features are the large number of diagrams and simple sketch-maps, intended not only to illustrate particular problems, but also to serve as a guide to teachers and scholars in the construction of other similar maps and diagrams. Further, as there is now general agreement that physical geography can only be regarded as coming legitimately under the scope of school geography when the phenomena described are considered in their relation to human life and activities, this aspect of the subject has been carefully kept in view, and references have been given to facilitate further work by teacher and scholar in this direction. Again, as it has always been an objection to the ordinary text-book of physical geography that it treats the subject from too abstract a standpoint, giving, for example, generalised accounts of plains, plateaux, etc., without adequate discussion of particular examples, and thus producing an impression of unreality, this danger has been avoided here by the description of concrete examples, intended to be used by the pupil as models for similar accounts of his own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Professor Merrill adds a manual to the list that appears to fill a need in the schools arising from the fact that some of the manuals already published are too elementary and some are too far advanced. That is, some of them require too much purely mechanical work, giving the impression that the object is to occupy the hands of the pupil regardless of whether the exercise illustrates any principles or leads to any conclusions. The other class of manuals presumes too much on the previous knowledge and experience of the pupil for the early years of the school. This gap between the two kinds of manuals appears to be filled better by Professor Merrill's book than by any other that I have seen. It likewise is wider in its scope and covers the Whole field of Physical Geography more thoroughly than any other. It is a step in the right direction and I hope it may prove serviceable to all who use it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
