Book excerpt: This is an elementary textbook on an advanced topic: broadband telecommunica tion networks. I must declare at the outset that this book is not primarily intended for an audience of telecommunication specialists who are weIl versed in the concepts, system architectures, and underlying technologies of high-speed, multi media, bandwidth-on-demand, packet-switching networks, although the techni caIly sophisticated telecommunication practitioner may wish to use it as a refer ence. Nor is this book intended to be an advanced textbook on the subject of broadband networks. Rather, this book is primarily intended for those eager to leam more about this exciting fron tier in the field of telecommunications, an audience that includes systems designers, hardware and software engineers, en gineering students, R&D managers, and market planners who seek an understand ing of local-, metropolitan-, and wide-area broadband networks for integrating voice, data, image, and video. Its primary audience also includes researchers and engineers from other disciplines or other branches of telecommunications who anticipate a future involvement in, or who would simply like to leam more about, the field of broadband networks, along with scientific researchers and corporate telecommunication and data communication managers whose increasingly sophis ticated applications would benefit from (and drive the need for) broadband net works. Advanced topics are certainly not ignored (in fact, a plausible argument could be mounted that aIl of the material is advanced, given the infancy of the topic).

Book excerpt: This volume contains six review articles on a range of topics of research in optics. The first article deals with various nonlinear optical phenomena in stratified media, showing that resonances which arise from stratification are of considerable importance for achieving low-threshold nonlinear optical devices. It also includes a study of optical bistability and harmonic generation in Kerr nonlinear layered media, and various phase matching techniques are discussed, along with developments in gap solutions, weak photon localization and enhancement of nonlinear susceptibilities in layered composites. The second article reviews the optical aspects of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors, and article number three presents a review of temperature-related effects and thermal modelling of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The review concludes with a look at the most important results obtained. The fourth articles describeds some theoretical developments in mathematical techniques that are used in physical optics and in optical information processing. These include generaliztions with parameters which take on fractional or complex values, and their use in areas of optics is discussed. Following articles discuss a number of Fourier-plane nonlinear filtering techniques and present an overview of the field of optical digital computing and interconnection. Various aspects are covered, including the historical development, the motivation for the use of free-space optics in computing applications, computational aspects of nonlinear optical devices and optical interconnections and their implementations. The articles conclude with an overview of architectures and systems for free-space optical computing and switching.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Networking (ICN 2005) was the fourth conf- ence in its series aimed at stimulating technical exchange in the emerging and important ?eld of networking. On behalf of the International Advisory C- mittee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the proceedings of the 2005 event. Networking faces dramatic changes due to the customer-centric view, the venue of the next generation networks paradigm, the push from ubiquitous n- working, andthenewservicemodels.Despitelegacyproblems, whichresearchers and industry are still discovering and improving the state of the art, the ho- zon has revealed new challenges that some of the authors tackled through their submissions. InfactICN2005wasverywellperceivedbytheinternationalnetworkingc- munity. A total of 651 papers from more than 60 countries were submitted, from which 238 were accepted. Each paper was reviewed by several members of the Technical Program Committee. This year, the Advisory Committee revalidated various accepted papers after the reviews had been incorporated. We perceived a signi?cant improvement in the number of submissions and the quality of the submissions. TheICN2005programcoveredavarietyofresearchtopicsthatareofcurrent interest, startingwithGridnetworks, multicasting,TCPoptimizations,QoSand security, emergency services, and network resiliency. The Program Committee selected also three tutorials and invited speakers that addressed the latest - search results from the international industries and academia, and reports on ?ndings from mobile, satellite, and personal communications related to 3rd- and 4th-generation research projects and standardization.
