Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massive in-migration to a new town leads to socio-cultural and linguistic contact and—inevitably--change. Which linguistic features are preferred in the new dialect? Why do these features prevail? And how does language use in the wider society influence the local process? Randi Neteland explores local and national conditions of koine formation in Koine Formation and Society, using three Norwegian industrial town dialects as main examples. The koine formation is characterized by a complex interplay between social and linguistic factors, such as in-migration rate, migrants’ social characteristics, housing conditions, social class distinctions, in-migrants’ dialect background, and linguistic distinctions among the varieties in contact. However, Neteland contextualizes the industrial towns within the larger society from which the in-migrants originate, and these case studies reveal to what extent the language use and norms for language use operating in the wider speech community can also influence the outcome of the koine formation. In Koine Formation and Society, Neteland explores how the social and linguistic factors work together and discusses determining factors and constraints on the local and national level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is involved in acquiring a new dialect - for example, when Canadian English speakers move to Australia or African American English-speaking children go to school? How is such learning different from second language acquisition (SLA), and why is it in some ways more difficult? These are some of the questions Jeff Siegel examines in this book, which focuses specifically on second dialect acquisition (SDA). Siegel surveys a wide range of studies that throw light on SDA. These concern dialects of English as well as those of other languages, including Dutch, German, Greek, Norwegian, Portuguese and Spanish. He also describes the individual and linguistic factors that affect SDA, such as age, social identity and language complexity. The book discusses problems faced by students who have to acquire the standard dialect without any special teaching, and presents some educational approaches that have been successful in promoting SDA in the classroom.

Book excerpt: Why have 1500 separate languages developed in the Pacific region? Why do Danes understand Norwegians better than Norwegians understand Danish? Is Ebonics a language or a dialect? Linguistics tends to ignore the relationship between languages and the societies in which they are spoken, while sociology generally overlooks the role of language in the constitution of society. In this book Suzanne Romaine provides a clear, lively, and accessible introduction to the field of sociolinguistics and emphasizes the constant interaction between society and language, discussing both traditional and recent issues including: language and social class, language and gender, language and education, and pidgins and creoles. The text shows how our linguistic choices are motivated by social factors, and how certain ways of speaking come to be vested with symbolic value and includes examples drawing on studies of cultures and languages all over the world. This new edition incorporates new material on current issues in the study of gender as well as other topics such as the linguistic dimension to the ethnic conflict in the Balkans, and the controversy over Ebonics in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A the end of the fourteenth century, Norway, having previously been an independent kingdom, became by conquest a province of Denmark and remained so for three centuries. In1814, as part of the fall-out from the Napoleonic wars, the country became a largely independent nation within the monarchy of Sweden. By this time, however, Danish had become the language of government, commerce, and education, as well as of the middle and upper classes. Nationalistic Norwegians sought to reestablish native identity by creating and promulgating a new language based partly on rural dialects and partly on Old Norse. The upper and middle classes sought to retain a form of Norwegian close to Danish that would be intelligible to themselves and to their neighbours in Sweden and Denmark. The controversy has gone on ever since. One result is that the standard dictionaries of Norwegian ignore pronunciation, for no version can be counted as 'received'. Another is that there has been considerable variety and change in Norwe
