Download or read book The Collected Writings of T.E. Hulme written by Thomas Ernest Hulme and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collected edition of the writings of the poet, critic, and philosopher T. E. Hulme (1883-1917), a figure of huge importance in the formulation of modernist aesthetic and philosophical thought. This edition brings together for the first time all of Hulme's writings on poetry and language, philosophy, art, political theory, and the First World War. The volume includes thirteen works never before collected, such as Hulme's account of the 1911 Bologna Philosophical Congress, his essays critical of Bergson, his political writings, and his `War Notes'. It also restores to its original form and title Hulme's well-known `Humanism and the Religious Attitude', a piece which has until now only been generally available in a shortened and inaccurate version. The writings have been meticulously annotated and the edition is prefaced by an extensive biographical and critical introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprints the 1949 publication of the 1912 translation of the essay Introduction a la metaphysique, which appeared in a French journal in January 1903. While not an epitome of Bergson's (1859-1941) work in general, it provides a good introduction to it, and sets out his meaning of intuition at greater length than elsewhere. There is no index or bibliography. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Metaphysics This celebrated essay was first published in the Revue de Metaphysique et de Morale, in January, 1903. It appeared then after Time and Free Will and Matter and Memory and before Creative Evolution; and while containing ideas set forth in the first two of these works, it announces some of those which were afterwards developed in the last. Though this book can in no sense be regarded as an epitome of the others, it yet forms the best introduction to them. M. Edouard Le Roy in his lately published book on M. Bergson's philosophy speaks of "this marvelously suggestive study which constitutes the best preface to the books themselves." Book Synopsis Form without Matter by : Mark Eli Kalderon
Download or read book Form without Matter written by Mark Eli Kalderon and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Eli Kalderon presents an original study in the philosophy of perception written in the medium of historiography. He considers the phenomenology and metaphysics of sensory presentation through the examination of an ancient aporia. Specifically, he argues that a puzzle about perception at a distance is behind Empedocles' theory of vision. Empedocles conceives of perception as a mode of material assimilation, but this raises a puzzle about color vision, since color vision seems to present colors that inhere in distant objects. But if the colors inhere in distant objects how can they be taken in by the organ of sight and so be palpable to sense? Aristotle purports to resolve this puzzle in his definition of perception as the assimilation of sensible form without the matter of the perceived particular. Aristotle explicitly criticizes Empedocles, though he is keen to retain the idea that perception is a mode of assimilation, if not a material mode. Aristotle's notorious definition has long puzzled commentators. Kalderon shows how, read in light of Empedoclean puzzlement about the sensory presentation of remote objects, Aristotle's definition of perception can be better understood. Moreover, when so read, the resulting conception of perception is both attractive and defensible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last ten years, the interest of historians and philosophers of science in the epistemological writings of the Polish medical microbiologist Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961), who had up to then been almost completely unknown, has advanced with great strides. His main writings on epistemological questions were published in the mid-1930's, but they remained almost unnoticed. Today, however, one may rightly call Fleck a 'classical' figure both of episte mology and of the historical sociology of science, one whose works are comparable with Popper's Logic of Scientific Discovery or Merton's pioneer ing study of the relations among economics, Puritanism, and natural science, both also originally published in the mid-1930's. The story of this book of 'materials on Ludwik Fleck' is also the story of the reception of Ludwik Fleck. In this volume, some essential materials which have been produced by that reception have been gathered together. We will sketch both the reception and the materials.
