Book excerpt: America's beloved author, humorist, and storyteller offers a selection of meaningful and enjoyable poems Every day people tune in to The Writer's Almanac on public radio and hear Garrison Keillor read them a poem. And here, for the first time, is an anthology of poems from the show, chosen by Keillor for their wit, their frankness, their passion, their "utter clarity in the face of everything else a person has to deal with at 7 a.m." Good Poems includes verse about lovers, children, failure, everyday life, death, and transcendance. It features the work of classic poets, such as Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, and Robert Frost, as well as the work of contemporary greats such as Howard Nemerov, Charles Bukowski, Donald Hall, Billy Collins, Robert Bly, and Sharon Olds. It's a book of poems for anybody who loves poetry whether they know it or not.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Poetry: For Students of English Literature Chapter Four, on the fundamental problems of English rhythm, deals with the point of greatest difficulty in the whole range of the subject, and is to be regarded, not as making claim to originality, but as the most individual portion of this book. SO recently as the time of publication of the earlier volume, English Verse, it seemed impracticable to dogmatize on the elements of our metres, with any hope of doing more than adding another note to the discordant jangle of voices on that dangerous sub ject. But there is evidence that conditions have be! Come more hopeful; recent writers have seemed to tend more and more toward agreement on certain substantial principles and while one must still wait, no doubt, for a generally accredited science of English prosody, it is perhaps safeito offer for the use of students a rather more pretentious body of doctrine than would have been reasonable hereto. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poet's Walk: An Introduction to English Poetry I came the other day upon a volume of poetry, the gift, as the inscription ran, of an Eton tutor to a pupil 'who was fond of poetry, and was expected to gain some wisdom from this, the best kind of reading.' There are not many things one would sooner hear a boy, in whom one was interested, praised for than a love of poetry; though one would wish also, of course, that he should find from his reading so much at least of wisdom as, with honest Dogberry, to 'give God thanks and make no boast of it.' But as I wondered, for I had known something of the boy, whether the promise thus foreshadowed had been or was ever to be realised, I began to ask myself why it was that this fondness for poetry should be so rare a quality in boyhood as to deserve this particular record. Let me here be permitted to waive the possibility, - the probability, if my reader pleases - that in this quality the tutor found the only occasion for the meed of praise which his good nature prompted him to bestow on a departing pupil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Order of Poetry: An Introduction Poems are written to be read or spoken and to be enjoyed. Poems are also "studied," analyzed, evaluated, out any close inspection which does not have for its end the pleasure to be derived from, or the appreciation of, poetry is indicative of a serious confusion of end and means. We concede readily that many poems require "study" for the fullest understanding of subject matter, techniques, or even artistic refinements of diction, imagery, symbols, and the like. This is true because sometimes we are not familiar with certain topical or historical allusions in poetry which were common knowledge once but have now become obscure. This is true again because of various implications - biographical, philosophical, social, literary - which may elude us in a surface reading of the text. There is a tendency, of course, to be impatient with poetry that is "difficult," by which is usually meant poetry that requires repeated readings and probings. Yet difficulty need not be equated with obscurity, although in fact they are sometimes one and the same. Nor, for that matter, is obscurity necessarily a fault. It is to be deplored only when the poet deliberately clouds his work to create the impression of a profundity that is not there. The critic must train himself in judgment to explore what is profound and to expose what is merely obfuscated. The pleasure attendant upon the discovery of multilayered meanings, evocative imagery, complex symbols, or intricate metrical devices, is ample compensation for the effort of exploration. We do not suggest that all poetry is so involved as to demand strenuous intellectual attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Write Poetry It is assumed that those sufficiently interested in the writing of poetry to read books about it already are acquainted with the little that may be known of the laws of English prosody or at least know how and where to find them. And those who desire to follow far the keen study of poetic production are commended to such admirable works as Max Eastman's sympathetic treatise on The Enjoyment of Poetry, C. E. Andrews enlightening and comprehensive volume, T he Reading and Writing of Verse, Marguerite Wilkinson's The New Voices, An Introduction to Can temporary Poetry; and The New Era in American Poetry, by Louis Untermeyer. Each of these books, especially, perhaps, that of Professor Andrews, will help the seri ous, poetic student to much that he ought to know. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Poetry: An Introduction Many, though not all of the poets that have succeeded Whitman have found a fresh, living and vigorous poetry in a world of honest and sometimes harsh reality. They respond to the spirit of their times. The singer to-day writes about things unknown to the poet of yesterday. Not only has his View been changed, his vision has wid ened. He can employ any incident, any subject, instead of being restricted to legendary, classical or traditionally poetic themes. In learning to distinguish real beauty from mere prettiness, he is expressing the deepest aspects of life and, in so doing, he is recording not, as has been charged, more truth than poetry but more truth and poetry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Read Poetry It may be plainly stated, in beginning, that this little book is in no sense a didactic or tech nical treatise, that it Sheers humbly far away from the academic or educational religion. d104books, conveying formal poetic informa tion, offering best and most incontrovertible of studious reasons for the why and how of poetry reading, are thicker than flowers in May or sad hearts in war time, but here is no hint of addition to their number. The best argument that can be advanced in favor of marriage is that marriage has been found happy. The best of all reasons for reading poetry is because one loves it. And the best way to read poetry is with the love that, for love's sake, finds its own path way, works its own miracles of sympathy and understanding.
