Book excerpt: In the past decade it has become apparent to many who teach undergraduates or conduct graduate programs in prenatal development that there is a need for an up-to-date, -omprehensive textbook on the physiology of the fetus. Although there is an ever-increasing number of sources of information on specific aspects of fetal development, there is no single, all embracing text which focuses on the fetus and its physiological relationship to its mother. The Textbook of Fetal Physiology fills that need. This book succinctly presents the principles of fetal physiology, with clear illustrations. The chapters are be broad in scope, and their relevance to clinical practice is addressed where relevant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fetal Physiology and Medicine: The Basis of Perinatology, Second, Revised Edition documents many of the major advances in fetal medicine, including developmental physiology, pathology, and therapy. This book covers the most important areas of maternofetal medicine and presents different views of the critical problems of development. The various components of fetal metabolism are highlighted to demonstrate how animal experimentation has given a clear view of the interrelationship of the mother, placenta, and fetus. This text is comprised of 24 chapters; the first of which describes the use of ultrasound in antenatal diagnosis of congenital structural anomalies. This topic is followed by a discussion on sexual differentiation, acquired immunity, and endocrine changes, as well as the physiology of breathing, the control of the fetal cardiovascular system, lung maturation, fetal infections, and the effects of hypoxia on the fetal brain. This book also provides comprehensive reviews of fetal regulatory mechanisms, such as the reninangiotensin system, water metabolism, and fetal and placental hormone production. Other chapters focus on clinical applications, such as antenatal fetal heart rate monitoring, the technical aspects of fetal and uterine pressure measurements, fetal acid-base balance, and the prevention of preterm delivery. A section that explores the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life concludes this book. This source is of great potential value to all students and practitioners of reproductive medicine.

Proper vascular development in the placenta is fundamental to ensuring a healthy fetus and successful pregnancy. This book provides an up-to-date summary and synthesis of knowledge regarding placental vascular biology and discusses the relevance of this vascular bed to the functions of the human placenta.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade fetal heart rate monitoring has become a generally ac cepted method for fetal surveillance during pregnancy and labor. Although its importance has been doubted recently, I personally feel that this method has become an important obstetric tool. It has not only improved our knowledge about fetal behavior and fetal condition throughout gesta tion, but it has especially improved fetal surveillance during labor; the most dangerous period of human life has never been as safe as nowadays. The only people who can question the advantage of fetal heart rate moni toring are those who did not experience the period before fetal heart rate monitoring was generally introduced. The first paper on the history of fetal heart rate monitoring takes us back to the beginning of fetal surveillance and provides an introduction to the different aspects of fetal observation which are covered later in this volume. Common practices of fetal surveillance in different countries are discussed, and the paths that future developments will take are suggested. An outline of the physiological aspects of fetal heart rate regulation is fol lowed by discussion of the pathophysiology with which the obstetrician is very often confronted.

Book excerpt: This decade has seen a resurgence of interest in the prenatal development of behavior in animals, in part due to new technology which permits noninvasive, indirect monitoring of fetal activity and in part due to improved surgical procedures and other techniques that permit direct monitoring. All of these new techniques and methods are replacing the speculation of the past with empirical data about prenatal behavior. This volume provides a summary of the current state of thought. Historically, researchers have approached the subject from many different fields: child development, pediatric medicine, obstetrics, behavioral embryology, neurobiology, and psychobiology. This present volume attempts to unite these diverse interests by providing a concise introduction to the major conceptual issues, theoretical questions and empirically derived speculation as framed by leading scholars in the field of prenatal behavioral research. Researchers in fetal physiology and behavior, neonatal physiology and behavior, obstetrics, pediatrics, child development, and behavioral development will find this book useful in their own specific areas of concentration.

Book excerpt: The Fetus and Neonate is a series of practical, focused texts which concentrate on that critical period of human development, from late fetal to neonatal life. Each volume in the series examines a particular body system, looking at the physiological mechanisms which underlie the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life, and the pathophysiological processes which may occur in this period. Each volume will consider the application of new basic scientific knowledge to the clinical situation. This series will be a valuable source of information to practitioners and postgraduate trainees in obstetrics, neonatology, paediatrics and reproductive medicine, as well as to basic scientists in these fields.

This book discusses the accuracy of ultrasound autocorrelation method. Organized into seven parts encompassing 45 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the various factors that cause fetal heart sounds to differ from those after birth. This text then examines the importance of phonocardiography in monitoring the fetal cardiovascular system. Other chapters consider the significant relationship between the fetal heart rate patterns and uterine activity, wherein each uterine contraction represents a stress for the fetus. This book discusses as well the assessment of fetal motor activity in utero, which became feasible after the introduction of real-time ultrasound into obstetrics. The final chapter deals with the primary causes of neurological morbidity and mortality related to determinable events in the neonatal period. This book is a valuable resource for obstetricians, pediatricians, physiologists, and biomedical engineers.
