Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Childhood This book is written with a view to its use in normal schools. A course in general psychology is presupposed, since no space is devoted to the explanation of common psychological terms, though a glossary is added for easy reference. The authors are of opinion that the study of a special branch, such as child psychology, should follow rather than precede, or even accompany, a study of the more general science. It is intended for a textbook, not for reference reading. To this end special features have been employed, e.g. Mar gimal questions as well as topical headings, only limited references, sets of questions with each chapter. These last are of two distinct kinds, exercises and questions for discussion. The former consist of problems, queries to be answered in writing, directions for observations, field-work; the latter are suggested for oral use in the classroom. Either or both kinds are given for each chapter. They have been tested by use, and it is believed that greater value will be secured if they are utilized in the manner indicated. The references following each chapter are in no way supposed to be adequate indexes of source material; but they suggest what may reasonably be required of a group of students working with a good-sized library at command. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V NON-LEARNED HUMAN BEHAVIOR The problems of human behavior. The sum total of all responses made by an organism to the stimuli from its environment has come recently to be spoken of by comparative biologists and psychologists as its behavior. The term is inclusive of mental as well as physical and physiological activities. In this there is the advantage of an implied recognition of the fact of the unity of all life processes, for whatever the ultimate decision may be as to the kind of relationship existing between mind and body, the fact of a relationship is not to be denied. Life is one, and is to be understood only when studied as a biological unity. Approaching the study of behavior from the biological point of view it is necessary to consider such problems as its chemo-physical basis, its anatomical and physiological correlates, its nature, its genesis, the types into which it falls, and their relationships and functions. In this chapter we undertake a very brief consideration of these problems. The chemo-physical basis of behavior. All organic life responds to external influences acting upon it. Even the amceba has been observed by Jennings and others to go through quite a complex series of related movements in response to stimuli of certain kinds. Such responses in the lowest forms of animal life have their basis in the intrinsic mobility and plasticity of organic matter itself. We cannot here discuss in detail the chemical and physical properties which explain the irritability of organic matter, but must assume them as the basis of all behavior as well as the basis of organic evolution. Without these qualities matter remains inert and lifeless. Genetically speaking, the simplest form of behavior is a gross chemo-physical...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Mind: An Introduction to Psychology for Teachers This book treats in a simpler and more abbreviated form the same matter as that dealt with in the larger work entitled The Fundamentals of Psychology. It is intended for use by students in training colleges, by candidates preparing for such professional examinations as the Board of Education Teacher's Certificate, and by young teachers generally. It is intended to be merely an introduction to the subject Of Educational Psychology, and, it is hoped, will serve as an inducement to a further study of the subject. Chapters VIII, IX., and XI. Of this book have been specially added with a view to covering more completely the Syllabus of the Board Of Education for candidates for the Teacher's Certificate. The book should prove specially helpful in training colleges, where the amount of time devoted to Psychology, as well as other considerations, makes the use Of a larger and more detailed work impossible. Many minor matters have had to be omitted, and much Of what is expounded has had to be treated in popular and summary form. But, in spite of its brevity, the book will be found to give a clear account of the nature and development of child mind, so far as it is understood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Child-Study This book aims at supplying a fairly comprehensive intro duction to child-study. But child-study covers a wide field, and the author disclaims all ambition to be ency clopaedic. An introduction is obviously intended to lead to something further, and if the reader is induced to study children for himself, and to consult when necessary the more technical books and papers, these pages will not have been written in vain. The author's manifold indebtedness to other writers will be obyious enough to readers familiar with current paido logical literature. The author trusts that this debt is sufficiently acknowledged in the text. He desires to take this opportunity of thanking many friends for suggestions and assistance. Additional plates, tables, and figures have been included, as well, in the hope of making the text clearer and more meaningful, and new illustrative material, drawn from my continuing clinical experience, has been added.
