Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Bacterial Diseases of Plants Those who seek for completeness in these pages will not find it. The book is in no senes a monograph, but only, as its title indicates, an introduction to the subject. While the book has been made primarily for laboratory use under the guidance of a competent teacher, who will add to it or subtract from it as he desires, it is believed that many persons not students may find in it various things of interest, and partly with this wider public in view it has been illustrated very fully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bacteria in Relation to Plant Diseases, Vol. 2 This volume really begins the subject of bacterial diseases of plants, the first volume having had for its aim only the clearing of the ground by a discussion of methods of work and the general subject of bacteriology. Whatever in that volume relates to specific dis eases of plants was introduced merely by way of illustration, or to provoke interest in what should follow. The first part of this second volume deals with general questions relative to bacterial diseases of plants; the history of the subject, the distribution of bacteria on the surface of plants, the questions involved in the terms parasitism and symbiosis, the action of the bacteria on various tissues, the reactions of the plant, the interrelations of animal and plant parasites, and, finally, the problems relating to prevention. The wilt of cucurbits, the black rot of crucifers, and the yellow disease of hyacinths are then dealt with in separate chapters. In researches of this kind, covering as they do a relatively new and rapidly enlarging branch of science, the point of view changes with great frequency. T o day the interest will be centered on one phase of the subject, to-morrow, perhaps, on some quite different aspect. Fortunate for the experimenter if the new aspect do not require entrance into unfamiliar fields of discouraging complexity. For anyone to cover adequately by the experimental method a whole branch of science if it be a large one, is manifestly impossible. There will always be portions slurred over. The best that one can do is that which I have tried to do, via, to point out at frequent intervals gaps in our knowledge, to express things clearly and honestly, to distinguish between verified fact and speculation, and, finally, to leave each subject in somewhat better shape than I found it. The following pages are based in great part on data Obtained as the result of a multi tude of experiments made by the writer and his assistants, but all sources of published information have been considered. Even a summarization of the present status of the subject, without critical laboratory study, would be helpful, if well done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of Tropical Plants The very rapid development of plant pathology during the past few years and the increasing interest in tropical agriculture have led the writer to prepare this introductory work on the Diseases of Tropical Plants. An extensive study of the fungi, bacteria, and other organisms which cause the diseases of plants was a necessary preliminary to the development of plant pathology, and the progress in this subject has been much more rapid in the north temperate zone than in the tropics. In the past few years, however, there has been a great awakening of interest in these studies throughout both the eastern and western tropics. Nevertheless, the literature is scattered, frequently indefinite in character, and presents an abundance of difficulties to the student at the present time. While gathering material for this book, one correspondent wrote that the time had not yet come when it was possible for any one to write a work on the diseases of tropical plants. The writer is now ready to agree with this gentleman, and to add that it is doubtful if the time will ever come when any one author can adequately treat of the tropics of the entire world and their plant diseases. Effort has been made to avoid duplication of matter contained in that volume. Abundant citations to the more important papers are given, sufficient, it is believed, to put the student in touch with the literature of the subject. While many parasites not yet known in the United States are briefly mentioned, especially the more important ones or those which are likely to invade America, no attempt has been made to list all of these. N on - parasitic groups closely related to those that are parasitic have been introduced in the keys merely to give a larger perspective to the student. Effort has been made to give at least one illustration of each genus that is of importance in the United States. Fungi are devoid of chlorophyll and while transpiration, respira tion, and true assimilation are the same as with the green plants, photosynthesis or starch manufacture cannot be accomplished by them. Sunlight being thus unnecessary they can live in the dark as well as the light. Having no ability to elaborate their own foods from inorganic matter these organisms are limited to such nutriment as they can obtain from plants or animals which have elaborated it; that is, they must have organic foods for their sustenance.
