Edgard Varèse’s Density 21.5 (1936), Kazuo Fushima’s Mei (1962), and Tōru Takemistu’s Itinerant (1989) have become landmark pieces in solo flute literature, demonstrating innovations in both instrumental achievements and musical aesthetics since the 1930s. These pieces are often played in flute recitals to represent the Modern period in Western classical music.This study will apply intertextual analysis to the aforementioned flute pieces using music–theoretical—that is, analytical—evidence, based on current studies such as Klein 2005, Korsyn 2003, and Straus 1990. Applying intertextual analyses to those works is a proper way to connect these pieces, which reflect different cultural aesthetics. In a very practical sense, this study provides performers and listeners a new way to understand the music by relating each piece to the others.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to present the rudiments of acoustical theory and show the relationship between these theories and the new avant-garde techniques as they apply to the performance of solo flute literature. The opening two chapters are concerned with a basic explanation of the concepts of acoustical theory and a specific examination of the flute's construction and tone production based on these factors. The next two chapters are concerned with the contemporary practices idiomatic to the flute. These devices are explained with an acoustical basis in mind. In addition, emphasis is given to multiphonics, which are explained acoustically, with examples of its usages and problems The remaining chapters include a general survey of cqn^temporary notational practices. The exploration into acoustical phenomena resulted in new devices in composition and performance with the consequent problem of how to notate these new techniques. The various notational solutions reached by avant-garde composers and the problems these systems have created are discussed. A brief summary with recommendations is given in the concluding chapter. Two appendices are included. Appendix A lists books and articles that supply fingerings for multiphonic sonorities for flute. Appendix B lists books and articles that supply suggested and/or accepted symbols used in contemporary music literature. Appendix C lists representative compositions of avant-garde literature for the solo flute. A bibliography is included.

Book excerpt: Cristóbal Halffter, born in 1930, established himself as an important figure in Spanish avant-garde composition in the middle of the twentieth-century. As one of the prominent leaders of the Generación del 51, he helped establish modernity in music as a part of Spain's identity. His compositional style mixing tradition with the avant-garde was built on the success and breakthrough of Manuel de Falla, a composer with close ties to Halffter's family and served as a 'father figure' to the Generación del 51. This study begins with a discussion on Falla's work and reception, as he lay the groundwork for modernism in Spanish music. Further, discussion on Halffter's background and compositional periods, from his nationalist approach in the 1950s to his embrace of the avant-garde in the 1960s and beyond exemplifies Halffter's prominent role in shaping Spanish modernity. This research then sheds light on previously unexplored solo flute works Debla [Solo VI] for Flute and Studie II [Solo III] for Flute by Halffter. Provided is insight to their respective influences (the Spanish debla and the Fibonacci sequence), analysis of each work, and a discussion on their similarities and differences. By taking an informative approach prior to analysis and performance suggestions, readers will gain insight to Halffter's Spanish roots as they relate to nationalism and the avant-garde, his affiliation with the Generación del 51, and his compositional style.
