Each student has specific and unique stressors that pertain to them, as well as individual ways of presenting stress. Yet, research shows that, in regards to stress and stressors, there are patterns within race and classification. The goal of this study was to determine among each classification (Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law) which grouping has the highest levels of stress. The study determines whether high somatization rates and ethnic differences persist as the educational level rises. The study set out to identify which stressors are more prevalent among each category (classification, gender, and ethnicity). Ultimately, this study sought to gain a deeper understanding of College mental health issues, with the goal of assisting counselors to more effectively formulate outreach programs and in due course lower students' level of stress and increase retention rates. The study used a representative sample of St. Mary's University students. The sample was comprised of 777 students from the Counseling and Testing Center's (CTC) database. Each student had filled out a self-administered intake questionnaire covering issues such as academic and physical problems, emotional concern, and relationship issues. Each student ranked their level of interference in each subsection. Results revealed that Hispanics reported higher psychological stress symptoms than Anglos. Hispanics also reported more financial, adjustment, and family problems than Anglos. Furthermore, results showed that freshmen reported more adjustment problems than any other classification. In regards to differences in level of adjustment and relationship problems, significant differences were found among ethnicity and gender. Persistent high levels of stress, despite supportive measures taken by the University, such as an extensive orientation course and ongoing mandatory meetings with advisors, is indicative of the ongoing need for outreach supports for students, particularly freshmen.
