Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans choose from a dizzying array of schools, loosely categorized as "public" and "private." How did these distinctions emerge, and what do they tell us about the relationship in the United States between public authority and private enterprise? Challenged by the rise of Catholic and other parochial schools in the nineteenth century, states sought to protect the public school monopoly through regulation. Ultimately, however, Robert N. Gross shows how the public policies that resulted produced a stable educational marketplace, where choice flourished.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of how the American state defines its power has become central to a range of historical topics, from the founding of the Republic and the role of the educational system to the functions of agencies and America’s place in the world. Yet conventional histories of the state have not reckoned adequately with the roots of an ever-expanding governmental power, assuming instead that the American state was historically and exceptionally weak relative to its European peers. Here, James T. Sparrow, William J. Novak, and Stephen W. Sawyer assemble definitional essays that search for explanations to account for the extraordinary growth of US power without resorting to exceptionalist narratives. Turning away from abstract, metaphysical questions about what the state is, or schematic models of how it must work, these essays focus instead on the more pragmatic, historical question of what it does. By historicizing the construction of the boundaries dividing America and the world, civil society and the state, they are able to explain the dynamism and flexibility of a government whose powers appear so natural as to be given, invisible, inevitable, and exceptional.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in the previous editions this text is intended for those physicians, be they pediatrician, general practitioner, school physician, or other, who devote themselves principally to the care of children. There is considerable new information and up-to-date references have been included. The Bakwins present a critical and systematic appraisal of normal and abnormal behavior in the child. They have added their own evaluation of the vast literature, while reporting a long and carefully documented personal experience. The book presents a "common-sense" approach, and is comprehensive, practical, and easily read. Child psychiatrists in training, in clinical practice, and in teaching will find it of considerable value in focusing the pediatric viewpoint, and in facilitating meaningful exchange in a workable language between the psychiatrist, other medical colleagues, and parents.

Book Synopsis Truancy Prevention and Intervention by : Lynn Bye
Download or read book Truancy Prevention and Intervention written by Lynn Bye and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has shown that truancy is frequently associated with juvenile crime and dropping out of school altogether. With the high dropout rate in the U.S. and the No Child Left Behind Act holding schools accountable for their dropout rates, it is essential for school social workers to contribute to their schools' improvement plan in meeting annual yearly progress benchmarks. This book, by well respected researchers and practitioners who have extensive experience with truancy, covers best practices in truancy at the community, school, and student/family levels of interventions. It provides an essential everyday reference guide to research-based programs and truancy program implementation. Beginning with an introduction to the essentials of truancy, its causes and consequences, and state and federal legislation, the authors then give readers a snapshot of what research has shown to work so far and what adaptations might look like in various school settings. Richly detailed case examples illustrate multiple levels of intervention, from the school-wide prevention and general policy levels to remedial interventions, including culturally competent approaches. Eminently practical and easily accessible, with sample forms, methods of measuring outcomes, ideas for funding, take-away points, and digestible research summaries, this will be a trusted toolkit for school professionals seeking to reduce their schools' dropout rates and improve students' engagement with school. School-based practitioners and student trainees alike will find a wealth of reliable information about what is seemingly an intractable problem. They can immediately begin implementing the proven and promising practices presented in this practical guide.
