Book excerpt: With the current proliferation of electric machines taking over roles that were historically performed by mechanical transmissions and combustion engines, strides are being taken to make electric machines more power and torque dense, as well as less expensive. The wound field synchronous machine (WFSM) has advantages in power density, controllability, as well as cost of manufacturing, over other types including induction machines and permanent magnet synchronous machines. Its use for vehicle and traction applications has been limited due to the requirement of electrical power on the rotor field windings throughout the machine's entire range of speed, including stall. Field excitation requirements at stall and low speeds prohibit the use of conventional brushless exciters, commonly used in gen-sets, which rely on shaft rotation and torque to produce field current. Gapped rotating electromagnetic transformers allow excitation at stall but suffer from complexity of manufacturing and added volume to accommodate the ferrous core materials required to complete a magnetic circuit. All contactless field excitation methods require a rotating rectifier diode board or assembly to be installed on the rotor, alongside the brushless exciter or rotating transformer, in order to provide direct current to the field winding, from a contactless power coupler which is inherently alternating current. Capacitive power transfer (CPT) has been shown to be competitive with inductive power transfer in supplying full field excitation to wound rotor synchronous machines. In this thesis, a capacitive power transfer system is described in which the rotating rectifier board, manufactured using conventional printed circuit board techniques, dual-purposes as the capacitive power coupling structure, resulting in an efficient, low cost and compact means for transferring kilowatt scale electrical power to a wound field synchronous machine. A design process for the capacitive coupler itself in conjunction with necessary passive components and controls is laid out, and experimental results are given for a CPT system being used to provide full field excitation to a 55kW WFSM.

Book excerpt: Permanent magnet synchronous machines currently dominate traction motor applications such aselectric vehicles. However, wound field synchronous machines offer a comparable alternative in terms of performance and efficiency without the unpredictable prices and high carbon emissions of mining and manufacturing permanent magnets. These machines are ubiquitous at megawatt levels, especially in power plants, but require high-performance, low-cost excitation systems in order to be attractive as traction motors. This work continues research into capacitive power transfer (CPT) as a suitable wireless excitation method for wound field synchronous machines. Here, a capacitive power transfer system is scaled beyond previous work to achieve a > 3X increase in power transfer over previous work by increasing the frequency to > 6.78MHz. A peak output power of 2.3kW at a DCDC efficiency of 88.5% is reached in this system. The system features a minimal part count series tank resonant topology with the inverter redesigned for megahertz level operation with special consideration for stray inductance verified in Ansys Q3D FEA. Likewise, the coupler structure's rectifier is updated to reduce the total parts count by half and handle kilowatt output power with a current-stiff rectifier. The current stiff rectifier features a large DC filter inductor on the output to maintain continuous conduction operation of the diodes. Using SiC Schottky diodes the rectifier has superior performance over conventional voltage-stiff rectifiers to achieve the 2.3kW output power to the load. Additionally, a capacitive resolver is developed to be integrated around the rotating rectifier ofany wireless exciter and also around the CPT coupler boards. This solution reduces the machine cost for traction applications by removing the cost of an external rotor position sensor. The capacitive resolver is made to be a drop-in replacement for conventional magnetic resolvers and compatible with their existing demodulation strategies. The general integrated resolver and rectifier is tested with a digital demodulation kit, AD2S1210 from Analog Devices, and achieves a maximum angle error of 0.3 degrees. The carrier excitation frequency is 20kHz as is standard for magnetic resolvers. For the CPT-integrated resolver and rectifier, the excitation frequency is > 6.78MHz and demodulation with an analog multiplier is used instead. A maximum rotor angle error of 10 degrees is achieved. Overall, the integrated capacitive resolver and rectifier provides an additional pathway to reduce the wound field synchronous machine system cost for adoption in traction applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focuses on fluid filled electrostatic synchronous machines, an emerging family of machines that hold promising specific and volumetric torque density. The contributions of the research are three thrusts: dielectric liquid selection, circuit modeling and electrostatic design/optimization. Effective electromechanical power conversion using electrostatics requires dielectric liquids whose permittivity and breakdown field strength can facilitate adequate electric shear stress beyond the capabilities of media such as air or vacuum. This research discusses design points for practical electrostatic force production and evaluates available off-the-shelf dielectric liquid in terms of electric pressure and shear capability. Circuit models of the proposed machines were developed to understand torque production as well as form a basis for vector control. Unlike magnetic machines where the conduction paths are confined within windings, the current field in the proposed machine is co-located with the electrostatic field. This research blends the electrical behavior of the dielectric fluid into the dq-axis model. The resultant torque equation is parsed into field, saliency and induction torque. Each component of the torque equation is expressed as functions of few key capacitances for the optimization purpose and maximum torque per volt is derived. Effective electromechanical power conversion using electrostatics also requires optimal geometric design. This research proposes an asymptotical approach incorporating conformal mapping techniques with field analysis to obtain the lower and upper bounds of the torque production, the trend of which can be correlated with the machine geometric parameters. This could be regarded as the sizing process in the well established machine design practices. A finer optimization routine is then implemented by solving electrostatic field analytically. The theoretical contributions were verified by an axial flux prototype machine constructed of cascaded printed circuit boards. This construction approach is low cost and scalable, thereby demonstrating a path for industrial development. Building the machine from composites and plastics plated with conductor allows it to be lightweight with improved torque density, which is a big advantage over traditional magnetic magnetic machines in terms of manufacturing costs and materials sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, electrical machines are classi?ed into d. c. commutator (brushed) machines, induction (asynchronous) machines and synchronous machines. These three types of electrical machines are still regarded in many academic curricula as fundamental types, despite that d. c. brushed machines (except small machines) have been gradually abandoned and PM brushless machines (PMBM) and switched reluctance machines (SRM) have been in mass p- duction and use for at least two decades. Recently, new topologies of high torque density motors, high speed motors, integrated motor drives and special motors have been developed. Progress in electric machines technology is stimulated by new materials, new areas of applications, impact of power electronics, need for energy saving and new technological challenges. The development of electric machines in the next few years will mostly be stimulated by computer hardware, residential and public applications and transportation systems (land, sea and air). At many Universities teaching and research strategy oriented towards el- trical machinery is not up to date and has not been changed in some co- tries almost since the end of the WWII. In spite of many excellent academic research achievements, the academia–industry collaboration and technology transfer are underestimated or, quite often, neglected. Underestimation of the role of industry, unfamiliarity with new trends and restraint from technology transfer results, with time, in lack of external ?nancial support and drastic - cline in the number of students interested in Power Electrical Engineering.
