Book Synopsis The Physics of Nuclear Reactors by : Serge Marguet
Download or read book The Physics of Nuclear Reactors written by Serge Marguet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 1462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume offers readers a progressive and highly detailed introduction to the complex behavior of neutrons in general, and in the context of nuclear power generation. A compendium and handbook for nuclear engineers, a source of teaching material for academic lecturers as well as a graduate text for advanced students and other non-experts wishing to enter this field, it is based on the author’s teaching and research experience and his recognized expertise in nuclear safety. After recapping a number of points in nuclear physics, placing the theoretical notions in their historical context, the book successively reveals the latest quantitative theories concerning: • The slowing-down of neutrons in matter • The charged particles and electromagnetic rays • The calculation scheme, especially the simplification hypothesis • The concept of criticality based on chain reactions • The theory of homogeneous and heterogeneous reactors • The problem of self-shielding • The theory of the nuclear reflector, a subject largely ignored in literature • The computational methods in transport and diffusion theories Complemented by more than 400 bibliographical references, some of which are commented and annotated, and augmented by an appendix on the history of reactor physics at EDF (Electricité De France), this book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to and reference resource in neutronics and reactor theory.

In the past century, colossal developments have been made and with specific reference to the mathematical theory and computational science underlying this discipline, advances in areas such as high-order discretization methods, Krylov Methods and Iteration Acceleration have steadily grown. Nuclear Computational Science: A Century in Review addresses these topics and many more; topics which hold special ties to the first half of the century, and topics focused around the unique combination of nuclear engineering, computational science and mathematical theory. Comprising eight chapters, Nuclear Computational Science: A Century in Review incorporates a number of carefully selected issues representing a variety of problems, providing the reader with a wealth of information in both a clear and concise manner. The comprehensive nature of the coverage and the stature of the contributing authors combine to make this a unique landmark publication. Targeting the medium to advanced level academic, this book will appeal to researchers and students with an interest in the progression of mathematical theory and its application to nuclear computational science.
Book Synopsis OpenMP Shared Memory Parallel Programming by : Rudolf Eigenmann
Download or read book OpenMP Shared Memory Parallel Programming written by Rudolf Eigenmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the presentations given at the Workshop on OpenMP App- cations and Tools, WOMPAT 2001. The workshop was held on July 30 and 31, 2001 at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. It brought together designers, users, and researchers of the OpenMP application programming int- face. OpenMP has emerged as the standard for shared memory parallel progr- ming. For the rst time, it is possible to write parallel programs that are portable across the majority of shared memory parallel computers. WOMPAT 2001 s- ved as a forum for all those interested in OpenMP and allowed them to meet, share ideas and experiences, and discuss the latest developments of OpenMP and its applications. WOMPAT 2001 was co-sponsored by the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB). It followed a series of workshops on OpenMP, including WOMPAT 2000, EWOMP 2000, and WOMPEI 2000. For WOMPAT 2001, we solicited papers formally and published them in the form of this book. The authors submitted extended abstracts, which were reviewed by the program committee. All submitted papers were accepted. The authors were asked to prepare a nal paper in which they addressed the reviewers comments. The proceedings, in the form of this book, were created in time to be available at the workshop. In this way, we hope to have brought out a timely report of ongoing OpenMP-related research and development e orts as well as ideas for future improvements.

Download or read book Thermal Energy written by Yatish T. Shah and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book details sources of thermal energy, methods of capture, and applications. It describes the basics of thermal energy, including measuring thermal energy, laws of thermodynamics that govern its use and transformation, modes of thermal energy, conventional processes, devices and materials, and the methods by which it is transferred. It covers 8 sources of thermal energy: combustion, fusion (solar) fission (nuclear), geothermal, microwave, plasma, waste heat, and thermal energy storage. In each case, the methods of production and capture and its uses are described in detail. It also discusses novel processes and devices used to improve transfer and transformation processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper is organized as follows: In section 2, we describe the no- orientation-discontinuity interfering model based on a Gaussian stochastic model in analyzing the properties of the interfering strokes. In section 3, we describe the improved canny edge detector with an ed- orientation constraint to detect the edges and recover the weak ones of the foreground words and characters; In section 4, we illustrate, discuss and evaluate the experimental results of the proposed method, demonstrating that our algorithm significantly improves the segmentation quality; Section 5 concludes this paper. 2. The norm-orientation-discontinuity interfering stroke model Figure 2 shows three typical samples of original image segments from the original documents and their magnitude of the detected edges respectively. The magnitude of the gradient is converted into the gray level value. The darker the edge is, the larger is the gradient magnitude. It is obvious that the topmost strong edges correspond to foreground edges. It should be noted that, while usually, the foreground writing appears darker than the background image, as shown in sample image Figure 2(a), there are cases where the foreground and background have similar intensities as shown in Figure 2(b), or worst still, the background is more prominent than the foreground as in Figure 2(c). So using only the intensity value is not enough to differentiate the foreground from the background. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f)
