Book Synopsis New Perspectives on Grammar Teaching in Second Language Classrooms by : Eli Hinkel
Download or read book New Perspectives on Grammar Teaching in Second Language Classrooms written by Eli Hinkel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Perspectives on Grammar Teaching in Second Language Classrooms brings together various approaches to the contextualized teaching of grammar and communicative skills as integrated components of second language instruction. Its purpose is to show from both theoretical and practical perspectives that grammar teaching can be made productive and useful in ESL and EFL classrooms. In this text: *First-rate scholars approach the teaching of grammar from multiple complementary perspectives, providing an original, comprehensive treatment of the topic. *Discourse analysis and research data are used to address such pedagogical areas as grammatical and lexical development in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. *The communicative perspective on ESL and EFL instruction that is presented provides ways for learners to enhance their production skills, whereas the meaning-based grammar instruction can supplement and strengthen current methodology with a communicative focus. This volume is intended as a foundational text for second language grammar pedagogy courses at the advanced undergraduate and master's levels.

Book excerpt: Recent SLA research recognizes the necessity of attention to grammar and demonstrates that form-focused instruction is especially effective when it is incorporated into a meaningful communicative context. Designed specifically for second-language teachers, this text identifies and explores the various options for integrating a focus on grammar and a focus on communication in classroom contexts and offers concrete examples of teaching activities for each option. Each chapter includes a description of the option, its theoretical and empirical background, examples of activities illustrating in a non-technical manner how it can be implemented in the classroom, questions for reflection, and a list of useful resources that teachers can consult for further information.

Book Synopsis Scientific Knowledge by : J.H. Fetzer
Download or read book Scientific Knowledge written by J.H. Fetzer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this defense of intensional realism as a philosophical foundation for understanding scientific procedures and grounding scientific knowledge, James Fetzer provides a systematic alternative to much of recent work on scientific theory. To Fetzer, the current state of understanding the 'laws' of nature, or the 'law-like' statements of scientific theories, appears to be one of philosophical defeat; and he is determined to overcome that defeat. Based upon his incisive advocacy of the single-case propensity interpretation of probability, Fetzer develops a coherent structure within which the central problems of the philosophy of science find their solutions. Whether the reader accepts the author's contentions may, in the end, depend upon ancient choices in the interpretation of experience and explanation, but there can be little doubt of Fetzer's spirited competence in arguing for setting ontology before epistemology, and within the analysis of language. To us, Fetzer's ambition is appealing, fusing, as he says, the substantive commitment of the Popperian with the conscientious sensitivity of the Hempelian to the technical precision required for justified explication. To Fetzer, science is the objective pursuit of fallible general knowledge. This innocent character ization, which we suppose most scientists would welcome, receives a most careful elaboration in this book; it will demand equally careful critical con sideration. The book offers more than 50 complete lessons covering a wide range of grammar structures, learner levels, and age groups. Each lesson is divided into two main sections: Language Awareness Activities and Creative Grammar Practice. The Language Awareness Activities are designed to introduce and provide initial practice of items that may still be unfamiliar to students. The Creative Grammar Practice section provides ideas for a deeper and more personalised familiarisation with these items, always with an element of individual creativity. Each lesson ends with the creation of a learner text - a permanent and original record of the grammar, in the form of a story or a poem for example.
Book Synopsis Teaching Grammar to EFL University Students by : Mohamed Ben Nasr
Download or read book Teaching Grammar to EFL University Students written by Mohamed Ben Nasr and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, Misurata University (School of Education), course: English Language Teaching, language: English, abstract: There has been much debate in the last 20 years about the most effective way of acquiring grammatical structures of a second language. The so-called Inductive Approach has benefited students in terms of mastering rules and learning about different structures. In the context of EFL university students in Libya, the so-called Inductive Approach has proved to be successful in making students practice the language inside the classroom, but not outside it. It is clear that students are encouraged to be accurate rather than fluent. My main argument is that the instructions provided by the inductive approach are still not able to reflect effectively the natural learning environment. This might be the result of teaching Grammar outside the context. I will argue for that teaching Grammar through context is quite critical in helping students perform more naturally outside the classroom even though communicative activities are randomly selected.
