Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Indian Summer of Steam' is the second volume of David Maidment's 'railway' autobiography, following his first book 'A Privileged Journey.' David was a railway enthusiast who made the hobby his career. After management training on the Western Region, between 1961 and 1964, he became a stationmaster in a Welsh Valley, an Area Manager on the Cardiff Swansea main line and radiating valleys, the South Wales Train Planning Officer, the Head of Productivity Services for the Western Region and subsequently the British Railways Board, before four years from 1982 as Chief Operating Manager of the London Midland Region, the BRB's first Quality & Reliability Manager in 1986, and finally British Rail's Head of Safety Policy after the Clapham Junction train accident, until privatisation. This experience led to a number of years as an international railway safety consultant, and, as a result of an encounter on an Indian railway station during a business trip abroad, to found the 'Railway Children' charity to support street children living on the rail and bus stations of India, East Africa and the UK, described in 2012 by an officer of the United Nations Human Rights Commission as the largest charity in the world working exclusively for street children. All this is the background to the descriptions the author gives of the last years of steam and his many journeys and experiences during his training in South Wales and the South West, his travels all over BR from 1962 until the end of steam in 1968, his search for steam in France, East and West Germany and China and the steam specials in Britain, France, Germany and China after the demise of regular steam working. The book includes over 100 black and white and 100 colour photos, most taken by the author during his travels, and nearly forty pages of logs of locomotive performance in Britain and the continent. All royalties from the book are being donated by the author to the charity he founded, a brief description of which is included in the last chapter of the book.

Book excerpt: James Cameron was no stranger to India when he travelled there with his wife in 1972. His work as journalist and his new family brought him a closer understanding of the country he already loved. He also met new people, travelled to unfamilar areas and witnessed the changes that Independence had brought. With this fresh eye he saw kindness and corruption, beauty and filth, impossible bureaucracy and profound humanity. This text tells of his experiences.

Book excerpt: The author’s second volume about the Great Western’s classic express locomotives covers their final six years in British Railways service. In 1960 the Castles, many now modernized with double chimneys and 4-row superheaters, were still in charge of most of the Western Region’s expresses, but by the summer of 1963 their regular express work was limited to the London – Worcester route. Their declining numbers in the last couple of years covered special summer and relief trains, parcels and freight work, deputizing for failed or unavailable diesels and a flurry of excursions and railtours where their prowess could still be demonstrated. The author worked and lived alongside them in these years and the book includes much of his own personal experience on the footplate, on their trains and on shed. The book recaps briefly their first 25 years and covers their history, operation and performance in their final years and is copiously illustrated including over 100 color photographs.

Book excerpt: Komayo is a former geisha who, upon the death of her husband, returns to the "world of flower and willow" to escape poverty. A chance encounter with an old patron, Yoshioka, leads to a potentially profitable relationship: Yoshioka believes Komayo can restore his lost innocence; Komayo uses Yoshioka's patronage to compete in elaborate music and dance performances. As Komayo considers Yoshioka's offer, she falls in love with Segawa, a young actor who promises to turn the talented geisha into the finest dancer in the Shimbashi quarter. Komayo is eager to become the lead performer among her peers. Her ambition even tempts her to assume a third patron known as the "Sea Monster," a repellent but wealthy antiques dealer. As she grows to realize a glittering career, Komayo becomes the target of her three lovers' bitter rivalry, which leaves her both thrilled and exhausted, brutalized and redeemed. Nagai Kafu's captivating tale moves from the intimate corners of the geisha house to the back rooms of assignation, from the dressing areas of the great kabuki theaters to the lonely country villa of a theater critic and connoisseur of Shimbashi women, detailing one woman's absorbing quest to find fame, affection, and financial security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited Edition, published by Transport Treasury Publishing. This is a specialist railway book unusually aimed at three distinct and separate markets. The name of George Heiron will certainly be known to the railway market as a man whose high quality photographic images were complimented by his skills with the paintbrush. But this new book is no combination of photographs and paintings, instead it depicts just one medium; the photographs, and in so doing showcases some of the best examples of Geroge Heiron’s skill with the lens. The subject is is steeped in romanticism; the steam era railway scene on the lines of the late Great Western Railway and in a way probably no other photographer has achieved. In this respect its appeal is certainly not just for the railway enthusiast although the compilers detailed captions portray the technical information should that be required. Instead it is also a book for the photographic connoisseur. For someone who enjoys seeing how art can be created from everyday scenes, trains, structures, people – indeed from the very fabric of everyday life. Finally it is a book for the coffee table. To be dipped into and savoured at leisure, for be sure once picked up it will prove a hard book to replace.
