Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inaugural Discourse Fellow Citizens: To-day, Pacific University commences its formal and public organization, accepts publicly and solemnly its responsibilities, and assumes a position from which there is no honorable retreat After five years of preparation, of painful and strenuous effort? this institution takes a step in advance; the idea of education has taken a higher form of development; the Academy has become the College. This occasion, and these exercises, therefore, in some sense inaugurate the Institution, and are of more importance than as concerning an individual, or an individual's usefulness. To speak, then, befittingly to the circumstances, to give utterance to the thoughts and feelings becoming the hour, one should bear all the joy for triumphs over past difficulties and for present prosperity, all the hopes and fears for the future, in his mind and upon his tongue; joys, and fears, and hopes, great in pro portion to the interests of education and learning concerned. It would be the mere repetition of what has already been expressed, by eminent authors, on various oc casions. They have told us that History is the science of human nature; philosophy teaching by example; the school of princes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Pronounced Upon the Inauguration of the Author as Dane Professor of Law in Harvard University: On the Twenty-Fifth Day of August, 1829 It has been customary in this university, for professors, upon their induction into office, to deliver a public discourse upon some topics suitable to the occasion. Upon the establishment of a new professorship it may also be expected, that he, who for the first time fills the chair, should give some account of the foundation, and of the studies, which it proposes to encourage. I shall endeavour not wholly to disappoint the just expectations of my audience in both respects; premising, however, that much reliance must be placed upon their indulgence, since the subject affords little scope for elegant disquisition, and almost forbids those ornaments, which gratify the taste, and warm the imagination of the scholar. My plan is, in the first place, to lay before you some considerations touching the general utility of the study of the law; and to address them with more pointed application to those, who propose to make it the business of their lives. In the next place, I shall briefly unfold the nature and objects of the professorship, which I have now the honor to occupy, and the particular studies, which it comprehends; so that the noble design of the founder may be amply vindicated, and receive, as it deserves, the public approbation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Pronounced at the Inauguration of the Author as Royall Professor of Law: In Harvard University, August 26, 1834 Mr. President, And Gentlemen Of The University, In accepting the office to which I had the honor of your invitation, I have not been insensible of the difficulty and peril of the undertaking. To follow out the designs and continue the courses of exact and thorough instruction, projected by men of vigorous and exalted intellect and various learning who have here preceded me, and to act daily and constantly, by precept and example, with all the influences of an elder brother, on the minds of so many young men already the hope of our country, is a work of magnitude sufficient to oppress a stouter heart than mine. And perilous indeed is the position, exposed to the brilliant lights of jurisprudence and of science by which I am surrounded. Yet, believing that an honor like this, unsought, was not to be declined, I have not felt at liberty to withhold this testimony of devotedness to a science of such surpassing value as the law; affecting, as it does, all we hold dear in civil or social life, and imparting, as it may be well or ill understood and administered, either health and vigor, or disease and death to our institutions. I shall have to con sider its representatives shortly, with all its virtues and faults, both of which were learned and loaned from the illustrious Frenchman. For not only did he convey to them his anatomical way of thinking, but he also taught them to be satisfied with coarse local anatomical lesions, and with a nominal diagnosis, adding the assurance that those lesions must lead to death that indeed the case is either getting well spontaneously, or is absolutely hope less, and that a treatment of any kind is powerless.
