Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the contributing factors impacting a female administrator's decision regarding whether to obtain a superintendent certificate and whether to become a superintendent. The problem addressed is the need to have a more representative group of superintendents, which would include a higher percentage of female superintendents. Through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, the researcher determined the contributing factors of why female leaders do not aspire to the superintendency. All female building principals and central office leaders in the 22 school districts of one suburban metropolitan county were invited to participate in the questionnaire and the sample size of participants was 40 women. Research questions included: (a) What factors influence women's decisions to obtain a superintendent certificate if they have already achieved a doctorate in an educational leadership related field?; (b) What factors influence women's decisions to not obtain a superintendent certificate if they have already achieved a doctorate in an educational leadership related field?; (c) What specific factors deter women from pursuing the superintendency if they have obtained a superintendent certificate?; (d) What specific factors persuade women to pursue the superintendency if they have pursued, or are currently pursuing the superintendency? Findings from this study revealed "politics" as a deterrent to the superintendency. Women also felt that work-life balance is impossible to obtain in a superintendent role, and they place a high value on balance. Women early and late in their administrative careers cited "timing" as a reason they have not pursued the superintendency yet. Women who planned to be superintendents shared a belief in themselves. Many of the women had also been told by other people that they should consider the superintendency, which gave them self-confidence.

Creswell (2012) recommends that for qualitative research data analysis, the researcher should arrange and structure the data, code the data, and represent the data. The data collected for this study consisted of interviews that focused on five female superintendents in Arkansas who are employed and working in P-12 public school systems, and have been in the position for five years or more. Standardized open-ended interview questions were conducted with all participants. An analysis of the interviews revealed that having a strong support system and finding a balance between work and home were key components for their success and longevity in the position of superintendent. The findings in this study lead to further questioning on the successful impact that the female superintendents have in their public school systems, which could add to their longevity.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the perceived leadership practices of North Carolina women school superintendents during the 2008-2009 school year. The study surveyed the female superintendents who were listed on the roster of N.C. superintendents published by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction for the 2008-2009 school year. Using the Leadership Practices Inventory Self Survey (Kouzes and Posner 1995) and a demographic questionnaire to gather descriptive statistics, the researcher used analysis of variance to assess the perceived leadership practices of female superintendents based on age, administrative experience, and size and structure of their districts. The findings indicated that neither age nor years of administrative experience had any impact on how North Carolina female superintendents perceived their leadership practices. All of the respondents were aged 50 or older and 77% were 55 or older. The respondents' average number of years of administrative experience was eight. The structure of the school district was found to be significant in regards to perceived leadership practices for N.C. female superintendents. District structure was defined as the ratio of central office personnel to the number of school buildings within the district. When the district structure was 1.59 or less, superintendents perceived themselves to utilize the leadership practice of Enabling Others to Act most often. The findings also indicated that the majority of N.C. female superintendents described effective leadership practices as having a shared vision and mission, setting goals, communication and having high expectations. The results of this study were compared to a similar study of female superintendents in four midwestern states conducted by Susan Katz in 2004. The female superintendents in both studies perceived themselves to utilize the leadership practice of Enabling Others to Act most often.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this general qualitative study was to attempt to understand the lived experiences of black female superintendents, an underrepresented group in the school superintendency. I sought to identify the supportive constructs leading to the superintendency, the barriers to overcome in pursuit of the superintendency, and how the black female superintendent experience has changed over time. We employed a purposive sample in the recruitment of study participants. The six participants of this study are retired and practicing black female superintendents in the state of Georgia. Three are retired and served 1984-1999, the period closest to the year of appointment of the first black female; the other three currently practice in GA, and they accepted their appointments during or after 2000. The primary means of data collection for this study was the use of semi-structured interviews. Through the utilization of coding, I was able to categorize then reduce chunks of data into meaningful units as I looked to connect the codes to provide insight or explain the phenomenon of the black female superintendency in GA. Thematic analysis was conducted to generate a set of themes surrounding the superintendents' experiences collected from the in-depth interviews to attempt to answer the research questions of the study. These themes were: (1) What are the lived experiences of black female superintendents in Georgia? (2) What obstacles or barriers do black female superintendents have to overcome? (3) What are the commonalities among experiences of black female superintendents? (4) How have the experiences of black female superintendents changed over time? The six themes identified in the data analysis include chartering new territory, the inner circle, race and gender matters, getting there, evolution of the black female superintendency, and second set of rules. Filtering boundaries and black feminist thought are the lenses, through which, I analyzed and interpreted the vulnerabilities of black women to screening-out processes in pursuit of executive school leadership and to determine if gender, racism, or race-related influences are barriers to the superintendency. Evidence from the study suggested that there are particular barriers that thwart the career advancement of black female educators in Georgia.

This study focused on gathering stories of current female superintendents in the state of Washington, all of whom are within their first three years of their superintendency to determine the extent to which mentoring had an impact on their career path leading into the superintendency role and the impact of mentoring in sustaining their role as a seated superintendent. This qualitative study focused on five essential questions: What kinds of mentoring do female school superintendents experience on their pathway to becoming chief executive of a school district? Of the mentoring experiences female superintendents identify, which were demonstrably positive or beneficial? Of the mentoring experiences female superintendents identify, which were demonstrably negative or not beneficial? To what extent, or in what ways, do current female superintendents seek opportunities to develop mentoring relationships with other female school leaders? In this study, I focused on current female superintendents in the state of Washington who are within their first three years in the role as superintendent. The importance of identifying a group of women who were new to their superintendent position was to take advantage of their most recent experiences, stories, and opportunities while they were fresh in their minds and, by the nature of their experience, relatively new to applying their college preparatory experiences to their superintendent role. This research contributes to the existing body of research on the gender gap that persists in attracting and retaining female superintendents in Washington and across the country. The study implemented a narrative inquiry approach using qualitative methodologies based on in-depth interviews of five female superintendents in the state of Washington. I chose narrative inquiry as the instrument for collecting authentic stories of female superintendents through a personal interview. This allowed the participants to share their continual process and interpretation of their lived experiences through the language of storytelling (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016). The significance of this study is to examine closely why the gender gap persists for women superintendents. Data shows that women outpace men when it comes to degrees and classroom experiences, and yet women continue to be underrepresented in the top roles of our educational systems. Seventy-six percent of teachers, 56% of principals, and 30% of central office staff are female yet female superintendents represent less than one third of all superintendents in the United States (Superville, 2022). When it comes to degrees, females outperform their male counterparts by 100 to 75 for bachelor's degrees and even fewer men graduate with a master's degree (Reeves & Smith, 2022). A recent study conducted by ILO (In the Life Of), a women-owned organization, found that out of the open positions of the country's top school districts, men were selected for the superintendent role in 16 of the 17 open positions in 2021 (Superville, 2022). If women hold more positions in education and outpace men when it comes to degrees and experience, why are the highest positions in the organization held by men? In a review of the recent literature, the myth that women forgo the superintendency due to societal, organizational, or parenting barriers were dispelled (Robinson et al., 2017). However, recent literature revealed that other factors such as the lack of mentorship may contribute to the persistent gender gap. Importantly, limited research exists that focus on mentorships as a pathway for females to obtain and sustain the position of superintendent. Understanding the attributes of a successful mentor-mentee relationship may be critical in discovering how to eliminate the gender gap and help to clear the path for access to these highly compensated and sought out positions for future female leaders across our nation.

Using a methodology of portraiture, the study focused on five essential features including context, voice, relationships, emerging themes, and aesthetic whole. The analysis primarily concentrated on variations in demographics, educational preparedness, and job clusters. Conclusions from the study reflected common themes that included: intentions, accountability, work ethic, mentors and networks, politics, timing and fit, and personal and professional preparedness. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Although women actively seek advancement and constitute the majority of teachers in American public schools, they do not occupy many of the decisionmaking, administrative, or superintendency positions in education. This paper presents a perspective on the problem of women's lack of progression from entrylevel positions of leadership through superintendency. A qualitative, phenomenological methodology is used to illuminate the lived experiences of 16 women who were active in the position of American public school superintendent during the 2008-2009 academic year. The superintendents were of varied age, race, and family/marital status. The researcher describes the voice of women superintendents and their personal experiences through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of female superintendents who gave descriptions of their work lives, including their resilience and the obstacles they faced, in order to determine how female superintendents in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia were successful in obtaining their positions. This was accomplished through a series of interviews in three southeastern states with female superintendents who were either African American or Caucasian. Barriers to leadership opportunities for women and resilience factors were examined to help describe some of the reasons women continue to be underrepresented in the role of superintendent nationally and in these three southeastern states. Although gender discrimination affected most of the superintendents at some point, findings indicate that the most frequently stated barrier was conflicting career and family demands, and the most frequently stated strategy for success was networking. The interviews yielded insight into the actual experiences and commonalities of the females in superintendent positions. All female superintendents interviewed reported high job satisfaction, and all except one agreed they would make the decision to seek leadership and superintendency again. Each of the superintendents expressed having strong support systems; all 16 had mentors who encouraged them along the way, and they stated those relationships were vital for success at each stage of their career. Most stated that collaboration was the most effective style of leadership unless the situation required an authoritarian approach. Other important leadership characteristics included communication, vision, problemsolving, critical thinking and risk taking.
