Book excerpt: "With the advent of manned space flight, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has conducted intensive investigations on the physiological makeup of the human body. The last decade has seen major advances in the use of radiotelemetry in physiological research. Revolutionary developments in microelectronics are making possible smaller telemetry systems that can be wholly implanted in laboratory animals. The NASA Ames Research Center has been in the fore-front of such research and has developed many implantable biotelemetry devices now considered by many as a standard method for monitoring physiological functions in animals. This report describes biotelemetry developments at Ames, tracing the evolution of concepts underlying the accurate and reliable biotelemetry systems of today. Such systems are described in sufficient detail for the reader to select designs to meet specific needs. Through its Technology Utilization Program, NASA strives to make the results of such work widely available for the use of those outside the aerospace community. This publication is one of a series intended to achieve those objectives."--Foreword.

This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed as a text for the undergraduate students of instrumentation, electrical, electronics and biomedical engineering, it covers the entire range of instruments and their measurement methods used in the medical field. The functions of the biomedical instruments and measurement methods are presented keeping in mind those students who have minimum required knowledge of human physiology. The purpose of this book is to review the principles of biomedical instrumentation and measurements employed in the hospital industry. Primary emphasis is laid on the method rather than micro level mechanism. This book serves two purposes: One is to explain the mechanism and functional details of human body, and the other is to explain how the biological signals of human body can be acquired and used in a successful manner. KEY FEATURES : More than 180 illustrations throughout the book. Short questions with answers at the end of each chapter. Chapter-end exercises to reinforce the understanding of the subject.

Book excerpt: The objective of the workshop that is the subject of this summary report was to present the challenges and opportunities for medical devices as perceived by the key stakeholders in the field. The agenda, and hence the summaries of the presentations that were made in the workshop and which are presented in this summary report, was organized to first examine the nature of innovation in the field and the social and economic infrastructure that supports such innovation. The next objective was to identify and discuss the greatest unmet clinical needs, with a futuristic view of technologies that might meet those needs. And finally, consideration was given to the barriers to the application of new technologies to meet clinical needs.

Book Synopsis Blood Pressure Measurements by : W. Meyer-Sabellek
Download or read book Blood Pressure Measurements written by W. Meyer-Sabellek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to standardized casual blood pressure readings, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) - using automatic noninvasive (= indirect) devices for home readings and fully automated monitors for 24-h profiles - have become a widely used necessary tool in clinical research. This book summarizes the state of the art in the whole field of indirect blood pressure monitoring. It is based on two international meetings and on invited papers. We have divided the subject matter into two main areas: 1) Automatic blood pressure devices for discontinuous registration, and 2) Portable, fully automated programmable monitors for continuous monitoring. The availability of all new technologies is described in detail and current technical and physiological problems have been covered in depth. Both topics have been subdivided into a) Methods and Techniques, and b) Clinical Applications. Both parts are updated and have critically evaluated available automatic sphygmomanometers and portable computers equipped with different techni ques (e. g. , auscultation, oscillometry, plethysmography). Reliability in the intensiv Care unit as well as in outpatients management, common clinical problems, clinical relevance compared to casual blood pressure are described in the first part. In the second part, ten years of experience on fully automated noninvasive methodology - compared to intraarterial techniques - have been elaborated by international experts; the possibilities and limitations are clearly demonstrated. Analyses in different clinical fields in the diagnosis of primary and secondary hypertension are given. Different statistical analyses of blood pressure variability and circadian rhythms are discussed.
