Book excerpt: "In the Foursquare Pentecostal Church in the 1960s, Kelly J. Beard's mother saw demons, though those demons ended up being nothing like Beard's childhood self imagined. An earnest memoir about the destructive influences of poverty and fundamentalism, Beard's An Imperfect Rapture bears witness to their legacy. Beard's parents were deeply invested in each other, often at the expense of their children. When they transformed into strict fundamentalists, the family entered a 'spiritual and financial vise' with lasting repercussions. From authoritarian parents to abusive siblings, the trauma in this memoir is phenomenal and harrowing. Beard doesn't distance herself from the miraculous or the horrific. Rather, she names both experiences as real and claims her heritage in each."--Provided by publisher.

And while there have been visions he's wanted to change, Ade knows the Rule: You can't change the future, no matter how hard you try. Luckily, the stunning Vauxhall Rodolfo has just transferred to Mantlo and, as Ade has seen her in a vision two years previously, they're going to fall in love. It's just the motivation Ade needs to kick his habit. Only things are a bit more complicated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Nietzsche’s seminal work by a prize-winning translator of W. G. Sebald, Goethe, Rilke, Herta Müller, and Elfriede Jelinek. In Thus Spake Zarathustra, Nietzsche’s infamous protagonist sets off on a grand and noble quest to find meaning in a secular world and to live joyfully alongside the knowledge of death. In this new translation by Michael Hulse—the first in English by a poet—Zarathustra is revealed in all his bold and ironic splendor as a man who prizes self-worth above all else as a moral code to live by. Radical, uncategorizable, contradictory, and often humorous, Thus Spake Zarathustra is a grand celebration of human existence by one of the most influential thinkers of the past two centuries.

Book excerpt: Are you rapture ready? As a teenager in the buckle of the Bible Belt, Zack Hunt was convinced the rapture would happen at any moment. Being ready meant never missing church, never sinning, and always listening to Christian radio. But when the rapture didn’t happen, Hunt’s tightly wound faith began to fray. If he had been wrong about the rapture, what else about his faith might not hold water? Part memoir, part tour of the apocalypse, and part call to action, Unraptured traces how the church’s focus on escaping to heaven has it mired in decay. Teetering on the brink of irrelevancy in a world rocked by refugee crises, climate change, war and rumors of war, the church cannot afford to focus on the end times instead of following Jesus in the here and now. Unraptured uses these signs of the times to help readers reorient their understanding of the gospel around loving and caring for the least of these.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God tells us not to be deceived about the timing of our being caught up to meet Jesus in the air, an event Christians refer to as the rapture. He would not have said that unless there was going to be an avalanche of false teaching with regard to the timing of the rapture in the sequence of end-time events. Diligently studying pertinent scriptures in Gods Word is the only way one can be free of deception and be spiritually prepared for the times that may befall us. This book helps the reader to deeply study the Word of God to see the truth. Chapter after chapter leads to the same conclusionthe rapture will be a post-tribulation event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapture--or the belief that Jesus' living followers will, at some point, join him forever while others do not--is an important but contested doctrine among evangelicals. Scholars generally hold one of three perspectives on the timing and circumstances of the rapture, all of which are presented in this important volume of the Counterpoints series, Three Views on the Rapture: Alan D. Hultberg (PhD, Trinity International University and professor of New Testament at Talbot School of Theology) explains the Pre-Wrath view. Craig Blaising (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary and president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) defends the Pre-Tribulation view. Douglas Moo (PhD, University of St. Andrews and professor of New Testament at Wheaton College) sets forth the Post-Tribulation view. Each author provides a substantive explanation of his position, which is critiqued by the other two authors. A thorough introduction gives a historical overview of the doctrine of the rapture and its effects on the church. The interactive and fair-minded format of the Counterpoints series allows readers to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each view and draw informed, personal conclusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eternal Life and Human Happiness in Heaven treats four apparent problems concerning eternal life in order to clarify our thinking about perfect human happiness in heaven. The teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas provide the basis for solutions to these four problems about eternal life insofar as his teachings call into question common contemporary theological or philosophical presuppositions about God, human persons, and the nature of heaven itself. Indeed, these Thomistic solutions often require us to think very differently from our contemporaries. But thinking differently with St. Thomas is worth it: for the Thomistic solutions to these apparent problems are more satisfying, on both theological and philosophical grounds, than a number of contemporary theological and philosophical approaches. Christopher Brown deploys his argument in four sections. The first section lays out, in three chapters, four apparent problems concerning eternal life—Is heaven a mystical or social reality? Is heaven other-worldly or this-worldly? Is heaven static or dynamic? Won’t human persons eventually get bored in heaven? Brown then explains how and why some important contemporary Christian theologians and philosophers resolve these problems, and notes serious problems with each of these contemporary solutions. The second section explains, in five chapters, St. Thomas’ significant distinction between the essential reward of the saints in heaven and the accidental reward, and treats in detail his account of that in which the essential reward consists, namely, the beatific vision and the proper accidents of the vision (delight, joy, and charity). The third section treats, in five chapters, St. Thomas’ views on the multifaceted accidental reward in heaven, where the accidental reward includes, among other things, glorified human embodiment, participation in the communion of the saints, and the joy experienced by the saints in sensing God’s “new heavens and new earth.” Finally, section four argues, in four chapters, that St. Thomas’ views allow for powerful solutions to the four apparent problems about eternal life examined in the first section. These solutions are powerful because, not only are they consistent with authoritative, Catholic Christian Tradition, but they do not raise any of the significant theological or philosophical problems that attend the contemporary theological and philosophical solutions examined in the first section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avivah Zornberg grew up in a world of rabbinic tradition and scholarship and received a Ph.D. in English literature from Cambridge University. The Particulars of Rapture, the sequel to her award-winning study of the Book of Genesis, takes its title from a line by the American poet Wallace Stevens about the interdependence of opposite things, such as male and female, and conscious and unconscious. To her reading of the familiar story of the Israelites and their flight from slavery in Egypt, Avivah Zornberg has brought a vast range of classical Jewish interpretations and Midrashic sources, literary allusions, and ideas from philosophy and psychology. Her quest in this book, as she writes in the introduction, is "to find those who will hear with me a particular idiom of redemption," who will hear "within the particulars of rapture . . . what cannot be expressed." Zornberg's previous book, The Beginning of Desire: Reflections on Genesis, won the National Jewish Book Award for nonfiction in 1995 and has become a classic among readers of all religions. The Particulars of Rapture will enhance Zornberg's reputation as one of today's most original and compelling interpreters of the biblical and rabbinic traditions.

Book excerpt: Larry's Post-Rapture Pet-Sitting Service is the story of an imperfect man trying to build a business in the confusing days after a global rapture has taken good people up in funnels of feathers and evil people have turned to ashes. Larry, an ex-con, and his mother, Marjorie, start a website to register pets for After-Rapture care, hoping to collect insurance premiums but avoid actual work. Their plans go awry, and Larry is soon caring for fifteen cats. Larry would love to care for a dog, but all the dogs on earth have vanished. A call to pick up a cat from a deluxe country home changes Larry and Marjorie's lives. The homeowners have "gone up," leaving behind a yowling Siamese cat and a home full of amenities. Larry moves his mother, a friend and his cousins out to the Lucky Seven Ranch, only to turn up the world's last dog. As Larry and the bewildered dog become YouTube stars, a televangelist sees an opportunity to build a new empire, based on scripture, donations and possession of the Lucky Seven's canine. After a lifetime of losing, Larry must take on a smooth and accomplished media maven with all the world watching.
