Book excerpt: With the hundredth of anniversary of the South African (or Boer) War of 1899-1902 fast approaching, the campaign is receiving increased attention from military enthusiasts of all types. R.G. Hackett's bibliography goes far beyond the bare listing of author, date, contents, etc. that one so often encounters, to become a unique evocation of the era. The original covers of over a hundred books of the period are shown, with several dozen in full color, often showing regimental badges and colors. Most books published before 1920 are covered, with the author drawing not only on previously published bibliographies, but the private records of London rare book dealers and individual collections such as that of the British actor Kenneth Griffith. With a more just society now prevailing in South Africa, the sympathy felt at the time for the Boers by some can once again be appreciated. In addition to many British regimental accounts, this compilation also contains accounts of women in the Boer war effort, Richard Harding Davis' shrewd observations, and the memoirs of a West Point graduate in the Irish-American Brigade in Boer service. South African War Books not only belongs in any comprehensive reference library, but will also be treasured by anyone seriously interested in the period of the colonial wars.

Book Synopsis The Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902: 963 Days by : Pieter G Cloete
Download or read book The Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902: 963 Days written by Pieter G Cloete and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the start of the Anglo-Boer War today 120 years ago thousands of publications, written or typed reports and other creations have been produced to narrate the war events, express opinions on its origins, causes, course, results and legacy and on participants in the struggle. This process is ongoing, since the debate amongst both professional historians and interested amateurs on exactly what happened and why is still raging and new information on the war still crops up. The history of the Anglo-Boer War is truly a neverending discourse. As the author of a number of books on the war, I have consulted hundreds of both published and unpublished sources. Some were of limited value, but a small percentage of the published books were of such high value that they formed part of a small stack of books that found a permanent home on my desktop while I was in the writing process. Pieter Cloete’s The Anglo-Boer War – A Chronology, both the original English version and the enlarged Afrikaans version published in 2010, was always part of that stack. It is to me a privilege to write a foreword for the user-friendly and meticulously researched book. It not only contains a wealth of information but a detailed source list and an extensive index. There are few, if any, more helpful reference books on the war and thus represents an essential resource to anyone with a more than superficial interest in the Anglo-Boer War. Book Synopsis Black People and the South African War 1899-1902 by : Peter Warwick
Download or read book Black People and the South African War 1899-1902 written by Peter Warwick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South African War was a costly and bitterly contested struggle. It was fought in a region populated by five million people, four million of whom were black. This is the first history of the war to focus upon the wartime experiences of black people, and to examine the war in the context of a complex and rapidly changing colonial society increasingly shaped, but not yet transformed, by mining capital. The ways in which the war influenced the lives and livelihoods of different sections of the black population are studied - from chiefs and newspaper editors to peasant farmers and artisans, to farm tenants and industrial workers. Dr Warwick shows that black people were far more than either spectators to, or passive victims of, a white man's quarrel, and presents a thorough revision of accepted views on the war. He reveals the vital roles performed by black people in both the British and Boer armies, and shows how the regular and irregular participation of blacks exercised an influence upon the course of war.
