I watched idly a large dragonfly, beating up and down in front of me, and was surprised to see him make for my tail fly, which he at last clutched with his legs and reposed upon. Being familiar with the workmanlike manner in which a dragonfly can sheer oil" a real fly's wing, I was unwilling that this one should pay similar attentions to my artificial one, so I took up the rod and shook him off. He returned several times, however, in the most pertinacious manner, until I laid the rOll flat on the ground. It isa coincidence that he invariably returned to the same fly each time, and that it was the one which about nine trout out of ten had been preferring likewise, though I cannot say that I saw anything like it flying about alive." In the 1Eschm' lw the eyes are contiguous, and the wings are very broad and long. Very large insects are comprised in this family, and some of the tropical examples measure as much as eight inches across the wings, while in our own country several species exceed half this in expanse. There are three British genera. The distinguishingfeature of this genus consists in the anal angle of the posterior wings, which is rounded in both sexes. It contains one British representative. 2. FoRMosUs-(Linden).---1'his is the largest British and European species of dragonfly, measuring 34 lines in length, and 46 lines in expanse. Its head is azure, luteous beneath, the mouth fuscous, and the eyes green, yellow behind. The thorax is azure or greenish, the dorsal sutures blackish.
