Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Industrial and Social History of England This text-book is intended for college and high-school classes. Most of the facts stated in it have become, through the researches and publications of recent years, such commonplace knowledge that a reference to authority in each case has not seemed meces sary. Statements on more doubtful points, and such personal opinions as I have had occasion to express, although not sup ported by references, are based on a somewhat careful study of the sources. To each chapter is subjoined a bibliographical paragraph with the titles of the most important secondary authorities. These works will furnish a fuller account of the matters that have been treated in outline in this book, indicate the original sources, and give opportunity and suggestions for further study. An introductory chapter and a series of narra tive paragraphs prefixed to other chapters are given with the object of correlating matters of economic and social history with other aspects of the life of the nation. My obligation and gratitude are due, as are those of all later students', to the group of scholars who have within our own time laid the foundations of the study of economic history, and whose names and books will be found referred to in the bibliographical paragraphs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the American Official Sources for the Economic and Social History of the World War The purpose of this volume is to present a summary account of those records and official publications of the various branches and offices of the Federal Government which constitute the primary sources for the history of the social and economic activities of the national government during the period of American participation in the World War. The period covered is from the declaration of war in April, 1917, to the completion of demobilization in 19920. This period is, however, sometimes extended, at the one end to the commencement of hostilities in Europe in 1914, and at the other end to the later phases of reconstruction in 1922. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social and Industrial Problem: A Brief Introduction to the Study of Social Economics Hopelessness is perhaps of all things the most destructive of the qualities of energy, co-operation and imagination on which the progress Of the race so greatly depends; and it is diļ¬‚icult to appreciate to the full the immensity Of the task undertaken by those early trade unionists whose Object was to give coherence and a common purpose to the amorphous mass Of labour, and to weld these countless human grains into a material fit for the construction Of a stable and prosperous industrial society. The seed which was sown under such discouraging conditions has borne ample fruit. At the present time there are in this country alone about six million organized workers associated in a large number Of trade unions, which themselves are developing an increasing tendency to unified action in the industrial field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Trinity: A New Science of Political Economy The embittered relationship of the classes is mostly due to the prevalence of false ideas regarding these economic Obligations, the early economists having, in the name Of science, taught a theory that violated not only economic law but logic, and also the law of necessity - better known as commonsense. The greatest Of ethical teachers was also the greatest of social scientists, and by precept and example taught that man's contract obligations were not to be bartered for mere personal interests, no matter how tempting. He was also a working crafts man, and taught a Gospel of Labour - that men should work, and their employers pay them justly, if not benevolently. What promise does Socialism hold out to humanity? Has it come to destroy or to build? Does it mean progress and peace or does it mean chaos and civil war? Is it a menace to civilization or is it an inevitable stage in the development of civilization? The following pages are devoted to a discussion of these fundamental questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to English Economic History and Theory It should be added that, in regard to the two im portant subjects of craft organization and the canonist doctrine, further consideration has led the author to a somewhat different judgment, and, he believes, a more adequate statement in the second Part. The accounts, therefore, given in this first Part of the earlier history of these matters, while, it is hoped, not incorrect so far as they go, need to be supplemented by the discussion of their subsequent history in later chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics an Introduction for the General Reader AN apology is needed for adding another to the large num ber of books that attempt to' deal with the whole subject matter of Economics in a single volume. I offer two pleas in extenuation. The first is that nearly all existing introduc tions to the subject are intended primarily for the University student. The pious wish is generally expressed that they may be of use also to the general reader; but the general reader's special needs and opportunities are seldom borne in mind. His needs are different, inasmuch as he has not the guidance of a teacher and the leisure of the student; on the other hand, his opportunities are some compensation for these disadvan tages, since he has usually a practical interest in the economic system and an experience of its working, which the academic student lacks. It seemed, therefore, worth while to try to do for the economic organization as a whole what Bagehot and Mr. Hartley Withers have done for a part of it, the credit system to explain the principles of its construction and working in the language of ordinary life, and with reference to the experience and interests of the ordinary man. While it would need a Bagehot to succeed, I hope that the mere attempt will have done something to make it easier for the general reader to perceive the bearing of economic studies on the political and social problems in which he is interested. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Political Economy It is with great pleasure that I embrace the opportunity afforded me by the publishers of Dr. Ingram's "History of Political Economy" to commend the book to the attention of the American public. Dr. Ingram needs no introduction to our students of economics. His work in the Encyclopaedia Britannica has attracted marked attention wherever earnest thinkers are studying the social and economic problems of our time, whether in Europe or America. The present treatise deserves especial notice, as the first serious attempt by a properly qualified English writer to present a view of the progress of economic thought The works of M'Culloch and Twiss on the same subject were of value only because there was nothing else on the same topic. They testify eloquently to the exceedingly primitive state of the history of economic thought and policy which existed in their day. The work of Blanqui, recently translated into English, is rather a history of economic systems (and a poor one even as such) than of economic theories and doctrines. Up to the time of the appearance of the nineteenth volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica there was no essay on the subject in English which could be considered a very valuable one. We now have a treatise which will compare favourably with any work of similar compass in any other language.
