Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon new theoretical insights and fresh bodies of data to historically reappraise partition in the light of its long aftermath. It uses a comparative approach by viewing South Asia in its totality, rather than looking at it in narrow 'national' terms. As the first book to focus on the aftermath of partition, it fills a distinctive niche in the study of contemporary South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An immersive portrait of the lives of the British in India, from the seventeenth century to Independence Who of the British went to India, and why? We know about Kipling and Forster, Orwell and Scott, but what of the youthful forestry official, the enterprising boxwallah, the fervid missionary? What motivated them to travel halfway around the globe, what lives did they lead when they got there, and what did they think about it all? Full of spirited, illuminating anecdotes drawn from long-forgotten memoirs, correspondence, and government documents, The British in India weaves a rich tapestry of the everyday experiences of the Britons who found themselves in “the jewel in the crown” of the British Empire. David Gilmour captures the substance and texture of their work, home, and social lives, and illustrates how these transformed across the several centuries of British presence and rule in the subcontinent, from the East India Company’s first trading station in 1615 to the twilight of the Raj and Partition and Independence in 1947. He takes us through remote hill stations, bustling coastal ports, opulent palaces, regimented cantonments, and dense jungles, revealing the country as seen through British eyes, and wittily reveling in all the particular concerns and contradictions that were a consequence of that limited perspective. The British in India is a breathtaking accomplishment, a vivid and balanced history written with brio, elegance, and erudition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shias of Pakistan are the world's second largest Shia community after that of Iran, but comprise only 10-15 per cent of Pakistan's population. In recent decades Sunni extremists have increasingly targeted them with hate propaganda and terrorism, yet paradoxically Shias have always been fully integrated into all sections of political, professional and social life without suffering any discrimination. In mainstream politics, the Shia- Sunni divide has never been an issue in Pakistan. Shia politicians in Pakistan have usually downplayed their religious beliefs, but there have always been individuals and groups who emphasised their Shia identity, and who zealously campaigned for equal rights for the Shias wherever and whenever they perceived these to be threatened. Shia 'ulama' have been at the forefront of communal activism in Pakistan since 1949, but Shia laymen also participated in such organisations, as they had in pre-partition India. Based mainly on Urdu sources, Rieck's book examines, first, the history of Pakistan's Shias, including their communal organisations, the growth of the Shia 'ulama' class, of religious schools and rivalry between "orthodox" "ulama" and popular preachers; second, the outcome of lobbying of successive Pakistan governments by Shia organisations; and third, the Shia-Sunni conflict, which is increasingly virulent due to the state's failure to combat Sunni extremism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthology of highly acclaimed anecdotes from history of India under Mohammedan occupation, previously published between 1966-68 in Late Babu Rao Patel's MOTHER INDIA Magazine of Bombay. At the time, the Nehru government had unsuccessfully tried to suppress the individual articles. Demand from the public, students of history & research scholars have prompted publication of the present volume, with all the anecdotes in one place. The edition with 71 illustrations, also contains the true story on the Taj Mahal; that it was not built by Shahjahan, that it was a Hindu Temple commandeered by the Moslem sultan; that the recently performed CARBON TESTING had proved that the Taj had been built at least 300 years PRIOR TO Shahjahan's birth. The book also provides in original Persian, a facsimile of the two vital pages from the BADSHAHNAMA chronicle, divulging the original ownership of the Taj Mahal. Here is a book for those interested in Indian history under Islamic rule & preached by subsequent lackeys & dilettantes. Mail order only. Direct order line: (Tel. & FAX: 713-778-0960).
