The manuscript was left by the author just as it had been prepared for public delivery, much of it in the form of notes, and she had gone over it, indicating in a general way what modi fications or omissions might be made; and had the final prepara tion for the printer been in her hands she would doubtless have exercised, to a greater degree than has seemed allowable to an other, the privilege that belonged to him of making any modifi cations Of style and statement of the spoken address in giving it permanent published form. In regard to the documents, which had always been freely accessible, since they had come into his possession, to any desiring fuller information, recognizing a community of interest, of the membership of both congregations in Carlisle, in the associations connected with those that antedate the division in 1833, she proposed, in accordance with what she had reason to believe was the wish of her father, to place them in the safe keeping of the Presbyterian Historical Society of Phil adelphia, in the fire-proof vault provided for such deposits, where' they would be secure, and accessible, as well, to any specially in terested in them. E have, accordingly, been carefully mounted and arrange preservation and reference, and placed as a permanent deposit with that Society. It was her purpose, also, to have a complete set of reduced photographic facsimiles made, direct from the negatives, Of all the more important doc uments, as a memorandum, in many respects almost equal for reference to the originals in authenticity. This part' of her plan has also been carried out, and duplicates of these photographic facsimiles, from thirty negatives, have been bound in with copies of the address, and placed in the Hamilton Library, Carlisle, Pa., and in the library of the Presbyterian Historical Society of Phila delphia. Dr. William Irvin, on the occasion of the semi-centennial of the church in July, 1876, remembered by many who are still members of the church and congregation; and to him I am very largely indebted for many of the facts of the first fifty years of this church's history. Some embarrassment as to historical accuracy still exists as to many early events by reason of the destruction of a part of our first church records by the great fire which swept over the city in 1862, destroying our first house of worship and the residences and homes of many of the members. Fortunately the original register of member ship has been preserved and we are thus able to state with accuracy the list of the original fifty members, all of whom came upon certificate from other churches. History started originally at one fountain, but has since flowed out into many separate branches through all the world. There is nothing on earth that stands absolutely unconnected with something preced ing. We are not always able to trace the connection and discover the source from whence causes have issued. Al ternately effect is cause, and cause effect. Our church starts from the First Church of Peoria. That is as far back as We need go to learn who or what we are. The First Church will'traoe their course back to their origin, and thus to-day the great Presbyterian Church of our land is busy sailingup and down the historic stream of time.
