This book was released on 2003 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious intolerance, so terrible and deadly in its recent manifestations, is nothing new. In fact, until after the eighteenth century, Christianity was perhaps the most intolerant of all the great world religions. How Christian Europe and the West went from this extreme to their present universal belief in religious toleration is the momentous story fully told for the first time in this timely and important book by a leading historian of early modern Europe. Perez Zagorin takes readers to a time when both the Catholic Church and the main new Protestant denominations embraced a policy of endorsing religious persecution, coercing unity, and, with the state's help, mercilessly crushing dissent and heresy. This position had its roots in certain intellectual and religious traditions, which Zagorin traces before showing how out of the same traditions came the beginnings of pluralism in the West. Here we see how sixteenth- and seventeenth-century thinkers--writing from religious, theological, and philosophical perspectives--contributed far more than did political expediency or the growth of religious skepticism to advance the cause of toleration. Reading these thinkers--from Erasmus and Sir Thomas More to John Milton and John Locke, among others--Zagorin brings to light a common, if unexpected, thread: concern for the spiritual welfare of religion itself weighed more in the defense of toleration than did any secular or pragmatic arguments. His book--which ranges from England through the Netherlands, the post-1685 Huguenot Diaspora, and the American Colonies--also exposes a close connection between toleration and religious freedom. A far-reaching and incisive discussion of the major writers, thinkers, and controversies responsible for the emergence of religious tolerance in Western society--from the Enlightenment through the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights--this original and richly nuanced work constitutes an essential chapter in the intellectual history of the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locke argued that religious belief ought to be compatible with reason, that no king, prince or magistrate rules legitimately without the consent of the people, and that government has no right to impose religious beliefs or styles of worship on the public. Locke’s defense of religious tolerance and freedom of thought was revolutionary in its time. Even today, his letter poses a challenge to religious intolerance, whether state-sponsored or originating from religious dogmatists. Based on both Locke’s original Latin and the seventeenth-century English translation of William Popple, this edition offers a reader-friendly version that remains loyal to the original text. In addition to a forty-page introduction that situates the Letter in its historical and philosophical contexts, this edition includes excerpts from writings on religious toleration by William Penn, Baruch Spinoza, Pierre Bayle, and Samuel von Pufendorf, as well as generous selections from the famous Locke-Proast debates on religious toleration.

Excerpt: ...and by the spread of Presbyterian doctrines in counties whose population was originally Episcopalian. The division of the Synod and the spread of Presbyterianism in Virginia were both the results of the great religious revival extending at that time 1 Given in Foote, p. 104. 'Peyton, p. 80. sFoote, p. 119. throughout the English colonies in America. The.general revival has been called the " Great Awakening of 1740," but it was not confined to that year.1 It had commenced several years before that date, and it continued for some time after. It had sprung up independently in America before the coming of Whitefield, but it was greatly augmented by the preaching of that wonderful man. )The ideas emphasized in the revival were the necessity of the new birth for salvation and the ability of the convert to recognize the change in his spiritual nature, --doctrines which had been largely lost sight of by all the churches. Religion had become a matter of form, not of experience. The revival, then, was a protest against this formalism, and it affected all denominations. In the controversies that it either started or augmented, the Baptist and the Presbyterian churches were both split in two; the Baptist into Regular and Separate, the Presbyterian into Old Side and New Side. Among the Presbyterians, the Synod of Philadelphia was Old Side; New Side were the Presbyteries of New Castle, New Brunswick, and New York. The whole movement was called by its opponents the " New Light Stir," and its preachers " New Lights!" Before the coming of any of these preachers into Virginia, reports of the religious excitement prevailing in the North had reached the people of that colony.2 In Hanover county, a small company of those who had...
