With increasing demands in electric vehicles, electric aircraft, Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and other applications, the high-performance motor drive employing variable frequency control with higher efficiency and reliability is an indispensable part of the ever-changing technological development. The main variable frequency control is based on the sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique with control hardware implemented by using a single FPGA chip. The proposed SPWM control scheme has been realized using a Xilinx Arty A7 development board. The system was tested with a 3-phase Infineon Trench FREDFET technology based on N-channel IGBTs. The control scheme regulates the AC output voltage precisely with a DC power supply. Depending on the operating voltage and frequency, the motor may be able to run above the rated speed to gain extra power. Both simulations and test measurement results are shown.

Book excerpt: This book presents a brief overview of the Brush less D.C Machine (BLDCM) covering its construction, classifcation, control, usage etc.Presented further are two possible modeling strategies of this machine and their drawbacks. An attractive method by solving loop equations for instantaneous current is also discussed. This is followed by the simulation of a BLDC motor in the abc/dq frame by using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Some simulation results are presented. Also included are the results of some tests conducted on the machine. Due to the unavailability of the stator neutral, the tests to determine d and q-axis inductances have failed. The analytical reasons are presented. A new method for controlling the drive by a efficient digital controller called Field Programmable gate Array(FPGA) has been discussed. Three phase 1200 voltage source inverter has been simulated successfully using FPGA. The control hardware comprising of FPGA, driver circuit of three phase inverter & inverter module has been run successfully. Results of that test have been presented.

Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] The present work summarizes the work and knowledge acquired by the author during its Master's Thesis in the Research Group in Power Electronics, GREP. The development is based on the Multilevel Active-Clamped (MAC) power converter prototype, which was initially developed by GREP. Serving as a great introduction to the multilevel converter state-of-the-art, the prototype was tested and it was proved the need for a custom FPGA-based control platform board to drive a PMSM. The design of the board is then performed following the requirements established by the research group and the results obtained from the initial tests. Issues as power decoupling, signal conditioning and grounding strategies are discussed in the following chapters.

Squirrel-cage induction motors (SCIMs) are probably the most frequently used when compared to other AC motors because of their low cost, ruggedness, and low maintenance. The material presented in this book is organized into four sections, covering the applications and structural properties of induction motors (IMs), fault detection and diagnostics, control strategies, and the more recently developed topology based on the multiphase (more than three phases) induction motors. This material should be of specific interest to engineers and researchers who are engaged in the modeling, design, and implementation of control algorithms applied to induction motors and, more generally, to readers broadly interested in nonlinear control, health condition monitoring, and fault diagnosis.

Book excerpt: Conventional controllers like the proportional integral differential (PID) would have being very effective not just for speed control alone, if not for some complexities with individually controlling its respective controllers and summing up their individual contributions to effectively yield controlled signal output. Also, for its insensitivity to changes made to model parameters which may be as a result of misrepresentation of some control variables. As a result of this, developing an intelligent based fuzzy logic controller (FLC) became eminent, and on this basis, this book is written. By varying the motor speed with input reference speed, an error signal and a feedback loop is generated. The FLC then operates on the principles of mapping with corrective measure of the error signal generated and it is regulated by sets of IF-THEN rules integrating the Mamdani fuzzy inference approach. The rules projected and formed are used to overcome the drawbacks of conventional controllers. Since induction motors are widely used in many industries today, most especially squirrel caged, an intelligent approach to the control of these motors will save cost, increase reliability and efficiency

This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct torque control or DTC is a very latest ac drive technology which can replace traditional PWM drives of open or closed loop control method. DTC describes the control of torque of a motor directly based on the electromagnetic state of the motor as similar to a dc drive. DTC allows the motor's torque and stator flux to be used as the primary control variables which are obtained directly from the motor by using advanced motor theory. The major problems faced by Direct Torque control of an induction machine are the production of the high torque ripples present in the output of the induction motor. The torque ripple is caused by the use of the three level hysteresis comparator for torque comparison. This ripple can be reduced by using a special controller for torque comparison. By proper selection of the torque controller parameters the torque ripple can be reduced. The objective of the thesis is to model and simulate the direct torque control of the induction motor with this technique using MATLAB simulink package and show its feasibility by comparing it with the available DTC method. The models are developed from the various mathematical equations governing the system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growing interest in electrical machines in recent times, the multiphase machine field has developed into a fascinating research area. Their intrinsic features (power splitting, better fault tolerance, or lower torque ripple) make them an appealing competitor to conventional three-phase machines. Multiphase electric drives have been recently used in applications where fault tolerance and continuous operation of the drive are required. However, the difficulties in extending the three-phase conventional current regulation and control structure to multiphase systems still limit their broad applicability in industry solutions. The main objective of this book is to illustrate new advances, developments, and applications in the field of multiphase machines and drives, while exposing these advances, developments, and applications to the scientific community and industry.

Book excerpt: The emphasis on the theoretical study and simulation of the three phase induction motor drives is certainly due to the fact of fatal hazards associated with the high voltage and current signals present in the three phase induction motor drives. Other important feature is the cost of a full-scale drive system to test various switching, control and protection strategies. Therefore, design stage comes after a reasonable confidence and verification of the drive circuit and control strategies through simulations. In this work, a laboratory-scale low-voltage induction motor drive is designed which operates at 24 volts, accompanying with the simulations using Matlab and Simulink.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book on sensorless high performance a.c. drives. It is essential reading for anyone interestred in acquiring a solid background on sensorless torque-controlled drives. It presents a detailed and unified treatment of sensorless vector-controlled and direct-torque controlled drive systems. It also discusses the applications of artificial intelligence to drives. Where possible, space vector theory is used and emphasis is laid on detailed mathematical and physical analysis. Sensorless drive schemes for different types of permanent magnet synchronous motors, synchronous reluctance motors, and induction motors are also presented. These include more than twenty vector drives e.g. five types of MRAS-based vector drives, and eleven types of direct-torque-controlled (DTC) drives, e.g. the ABB DTC drive. However, torque-controlled switched reluctance motor drives are also discussed due to their emerging importance. The book also covers various drive applications using artificial intelligence (fuzzy logic, neural networks, fuzzy-neural networks) and AI-based modelling of electrical machines. Finally, self-commissioning techniques are also discussed. This is a comprehensive thoroughly up-to-date, and self-contained book suitable for students at various levels, teachers, and industrial readership. Peter Vas is a Professor at the Department of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen, UK, where he is also the Head of the Intelligent Motion Control Group. His previous books published by Oxford University Press are extensively used worldwide.
