Book excerpt: Objectification Theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) is a theoretically and empirically grounded framework used to describe the ways that sexual objectification in the social environment becomes internalized by women, and filters into psychological consequences and mental health risks for them in their personal lives. Of the three main mental health risks that are purported to emerge as outcomes in the model (eating disorder symptomology, depressive symptomology, and sexual dysfunction), sexual dysfunction has been least researched. The current study grew from a need to more fully explore the ways that self-objectification relates to women's sexual experiences in multiple domains of functioning. The current study expanded upon previous research by testing a model of Objectification Theory that focused on sexual experiences and included three new, potentially influential variables: sexual self-consciousness, sexual assertiveness, and relationship status. The construct of sexual functioning was explored via a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) of the Female Sexual Functioning Inventory (Rosen et al., 2000) and operationalized in terms of six outcomes: desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Participants included women gathered from undergraduate psychology classes at a large midwestern university, as well as women recruited from social media. The makeup of the sample was a group of primarily White women who identified as heterosexual and had experienced some form of sexual activity in their lifetime. Path analyses were conducted to test the hypothesized relations between the following variables: self-objectification, body shame, appearance anxiety, sexual self-consciousness, sexual assertiveness, relationship status, and the six sexual functioning outcomes. Results indicated that the hypothesized model fit the data well, and most hypothesized relationships were supported. One relationship that was not supported by the model was relationship status's role as a covariate in sexual self-consciousness. Results provide evidence for the mediating roles of sexual self-consciousness (full) and sexual assertiveness (partial) in the relationships of body shame and appearance anxiety with most domains of sexual functioning. The findings provide support the inclusion of sexual self-consciousness and sexual assertiveness in future models of Objectification Theory as applied to sexual functioning. Future research ought to focus on the replication of results with a more diverse sample of women, and on exploration into a more detailed definition of relationship status in order to capture its contribution to the constructs of interest.

Book excerpt: The present study extended the literature on eating disorder symptomatology by testing, based on extant literature on objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) and the role of sociocultural standards of beauty (e.g., Heinberg, Thompson, & Stormer, 1995), a model that examined (a) links of reported sexual objectification experiences to eating disorder-related variables, and (b) the mediating roles of body surveillance, body shame, and internalization of sociocultural standards of beauty. Consistent with hypotheses, with a sample of 222 young women, support was found for direct and indirect links from reported sexual objectification experiences, internalization of sociocultural standards of beauty, self-objectification, and body shame to eating disorder symptomatology. The model tested accounted for 50% of the variance in eating disorder symptomatology.

Book excerpt: Objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) is increasingly used to explain the body image-related experiences of men, as research indicates that men are at heightened risk for body image concerns because of sociocultural messages regarding appearance of the male body. However, objectification theory researchers have previously discussed the experiences of men without modifying the theory to consider factors unique to why men are also at risk for sexual objectification and the internalization process that ensues. Gender role conflict is introduced in the present study to better explain the objectification experiences of men. Results of a path analysis were that gender role conflict and sexual objectification experiences were predictive of drive for muscularity through a series of direct and indirect relationships including internalization of cultural standards of appearance, self objectification, body surveillance, and body shame. However, results also suggested that the internalization process that men experience in the context of sexual objectification is different than the process experience by women. It also appeared that the sexual objectification men experience promotes a drive for muscularity, which provides men with a sense of masculine agency.

The received interpretations of Whitehead's thought, Nobo shows, have ignored the mutual relevance of the solidarity thesis and the organic categoreal scheme and, for that reason, have grossly misrepresented many of Whitehead's most important metaphysical doctrines. Through the processes of anthropomorphism and humanization, people attribute human characteristics, including personalities, free will, and agency to pets, cars, gods, nature, and the like. Similarly, there are some people who often see human agents as less than human, or more object-like. In this manner, objectification describes the treatment of a human being as a thing, disregarding the person's personality and/or sentience. For example, women, medical patients, racial minorities, and people with disabilities, are often seen as animal-like or less than human through dehumanization and objectification. These two opposing forces may be a considered a continuum with anthropomorphism and humanization on one end and dehumanization and objectification on the other end. Although researchers have identified some of the antecedents and consequences of these processes, a systematic investigation of the motivations that underlie this continuum is lacking. Considerations of this continuum may have considerable implications for such areas as everyday human functioning, interactions with people, animals, and objects, violence, discrimination, relationship development, mental health, or psychopathology.
