Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistle of Paul to the Romans Such is the requirement that every student of Paul's Epistle to the Romans would gladly exact for himself from the translator. In the translation of a work of such immense fame, and of such immense moment, intrinsically, to us, we are right in demanding, not a free literary modernized translation, but a faithful repro duction of the exact structure, and the exact meaning of the original, even at the cost, if need be, of literary style, and of En glish idiom. But, happily, a version of this epistle, in order to be literal and exact, need not be nu-english, in either style or idiom. I've can express, literally and exactly, the words, the articles, the particles, the tenses of the verbs, the grammatical construction of the sentences, and the logical sequence of the thoughts, in clear, strong, idiomatic English. We can reproduce just the thought, and just the color of the thought, in appropriate English utterance. The history of Bible translation for five hundred years into English, will show how far this aim has been kept in thought, and how far this end has been attained. The Bible was first translated (from the Latin Vulgate) into English, in 1380, by Wyclif. His translation of the Bible, and still more his numerous English sermons and tracts, establish his now undisputed position as the founder of English prose writing. - (encycl. Brit.) Yet this translation, which had only a limited circulation, did not establish the standard of Biblical style for later scholars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exposition of the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans: According to the Analogy of the Catholic Faith IT may occasion surprise, that a parish priest, who, for the press ure of the daily and incessant duties of his office, has no time left for study, and scarce any for re ection, should yet have taken in hand to prepare a commentary upon a writing so hard to under stand and explain as the Epistle to the Romans: and it may seem yet more strange that he should have the boldness to submit it to public inspection. But some excuse may be found in the object had in view. For this does not profess to be a critical or learned work; and it was not written for scholars. It is but an expression of the thoughts which a man may carry about with him as a part of his burden; which sometimes burn within him and which he would impart to others as if for his own relief. And again, it is the result of the effort to make for himself What he wanted, and what no one else has given him thus far. Whosoever will study the word of god must, sooner or later, come to this Epistle; and whosoever comes to it must feel how very hard it is to comprehend; and the writer has not, in the course of his own reading, found any commentary on it which met those difficulties precisely as they have presented themselves to his mind, and which, at the same time, has aimed at harmonizing the words of the Apostle with the Creeds and System of the Catholic Church. The chief impediments in the way of a right understanding of this Epistle are not found in the sacred text. They block the path while yet we approach. There are certain popular explana tions of its meaning, which have not only attained to notoriety, but are thoughtlessly accepted, of vast numbers of persons, as correct. By these, or by some one of them, the mind may become pre occupied until it rests undoubtingly in them as true renderings of the Apostolic thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans Coleridge calls the Epistle to the Romans the profoundest book in existence. Chrysostom had it read to him twice a week. Luther, in his famous preface, says This Epistle is the chief book of the New Testa ment, the purest gospel. It deserves not only to be known word for word by every Christian, but to be the subject of his meditation day by day, the daily bread of his soul. The more time one Spends on it, the more precious it becomes and the better it appears. Melanchthon, in order to make it perfectly his own, copied it twice with his own hand. It is the book which he expounded most frequently in his lectures. The Reforma tion was undoubtedly the work of the Epistle to the Romans, as well as of that to the Galatians; and the probability is that every great Spiritual revival in the church will be connected as effect and cause with a deeper understanding of this book. This observation unquestionably applies to the various religious awakenings which have successively marked the course of our century. The exposition of such a book is capable of boundless progress. In studying the Epistle to the Romans we feel ourselves at every word face to face with the unfathomable. Our experience is somewhat analogous to what we feel when contemplating the great masterpieces of mediaeval archi tecture, such, for example, as the Cathedral of Milan. We do not know which to admire most, the majesty of the whole or the finish of the details, and every look makes the discovery of some new perfection. And yet the excellence of the book with which we are about to be occupied should by no means discourage the expositor; it is much rather fitted to stimulate him. What book of the New Testament, says Meyer, in his preface to the fifth edition of his commentary, less entitles the expositor to spare his pains than this, the greatest and richest of all the apostolic works? Only it must not be imagined that to master its meaning nothing more is needed than the philological analysis of the text, or even the theological study of the contents. The true understanding of this masterpiece of the apostolic mind is reserved for those who approach it with the heart de scribed by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount, the heart hungering and thirsting after righteousness. For what is the Epistle to the Romans 2 The offer of the righteousness of God to the man who finds himself stripped by the law of his own righteousness (i. To understand such a book we must yield ourselves to the current of the intention under which it was dic tated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1: A Practical Exposition; (Chapters I-VIII) The method of exposition in this volume is the same as that pursued in its predecessor on the Epistle to the Ephesians. After a general introduction, each section of the Revised Version is taken, or in some cases two sections are taken together, and prefaced by an analysis or paraphrase, as seems most useful, and followed by further explanation of the main ideas or phrases which each section contains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans: Delivered as Lectures in the University of Oxford About the Year 1497 In preparing the Latin for publication, I have had a somewhat difficult course to steer. Golet's style was long ago remarked upon by Erasmus, as not altogether faultless; and in this instance there is the additional disadvantage, that the present text appears to have been only partially corrected by the author. Indeed, the brevity of treatment in the earlier chap ters, as compared with the later ones, almost leads to the conclusion, that we have in the former an abstract only of what Colet really delivered. Except ing, however, in the case of a palpable slip of the pen, I have not ventured on any corrections. The trans lation will show what I thought was intended to be written. Neither have I judged it prudent to alter the spelling, beyond writing uniformly are, instead of e, for the feminine termination, and using j and according to modern custom, for i and u. This is in accordance with the plan followed in editing Golet's former treatises. When we find, in a single sentence of Bishop Longland, printed during Colet's lifetime, such fluctuations of spelling as aule suae presentia, this will not seem a great liberty to take. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle of Paul to the Romans Biblical science has progressed rapidly during the past few years, but the reader still lacks a brief, com prehensive commentary that shall extend to him in usable form material now at the disposition of the student. It is hoped that in this series the needs of intelligent Sunday School teachers have been met, as well as those of clergymen and lay readers, and that in scope, purpose, and loyalty to the Scriptures as a foundation of Christian thought and life, its volumes will stimulate the intelligent use of the Bible in the home and the school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 Sacred criticism, which prepares for the exposition of the books of the Bible, has for its object to elucidate the various questions relating to their origin; and of those questions there are always some which can only be resolved with the help of the exegesis itself. The problem of the composition of the Epistle to the Romans includes several questions of this kind. We could not answer them in this introduction without anticipating the work of exegesis. It will be better, therefore, to defer the final solution of them to the con cluding chapter of the commentary. But there are others the solution of which is perfectly obvious, either from the simple reading of the Epistle, or from certain facts established by church history. It cannot be other than advantageous to the exposition to gather together here the results presented by these two sources, which are fitted to shed light on the origin of our Epistle. It will afford an opportunity at the same time of explaining the different views on the subject which have arisen in the course of ages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exposition of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 2: With Extracts Form the Exegetical Works of the Fathers and Reformers As to the meaning of wines, the Apostle is here addressing Jews and Judaising converts, and hence it must denote primarily the Mosaic law, not, how ever, with reference to its matter but to its form, i. E. In so far as it is law, and imposes an external obliga tion. Compare the comment at 0. Iii. 20. As this character, however, of outwardly binding, instead of quickening from within, belongs to every moral law, there lies at the bottom of this reasoning something which holds true of all times and of all men.
