This dissertation used the theory of sense-of-community to explore how universities and colleges can influence student grade point averages and persistence to degree completion. Data were collected with the National Survey of Student Engagement at a Midwestern University. Factor analysis suggested four factors of sense-of-community within the National Survey of Student Engagement: Campus Social Milieu, Divergent Thinking, Institutional Involvement, and Relationship Quality. Results of further analyses indicated that sense-of-community influenced student satisfaction primarily through Relationship Quality and Campus Social Milieu. Sense-of-community also had a slight influence on student success. Campus Social Milieu, Relationship Quality, and Institutional Involvement seemed to affect grade point average; Relationship Quality and Institutional Involvement seemed to affect degree completion. Institutions wishing to assist the increase of academic achievement and graduation rates in addition to students' satisfaction with their experience in college are advised to invest in programs and policies building sense-of-community among their students, faculty, and administrators.

Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa’s answer to that question is a definitive no. Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, 45 percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills—including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing—during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise—instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list. Academically Adrift holds sobering lessons for students, faculty, administrators, policy makers, and parents—all of whom are implicated in promoting or at least ignoring contemporary campus culture. Higher education faces crises on a number of fronts, but Arum and Roksa’s report that colleges are failing at their most basic mission will demand the attention of us all.

Book excerpt: Student retention and success literature has revealed a multitude of variables exist that predict retention and academic performance of students during freshmen year. An innovative tool has recently been developed with the purpose of institutional improvement in mind, called the National Survey of Student Engagement. The psychometric properties have been scrutinized and reveal that this survey is a practical instrument to use for institutional improvement purposes. One aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the following variables and student retention: quality of relationships, academic advising, and satisfaction (in terms of with educational experience and attending the same institution). Second, the relationship between the subsequent variables and GPA was assessed: tutoring, internship/co-op experience, work, satisfaction (with educational experience), meetings with faculty, and projected grade index (PGI). Further, this study attempted to address the limitation of previous research of focusing only on retention or success, by identifying the influence of a variety of variables on both retention and academic performance variables all in one study. Results showed a significant influence of the quality of relationships, and satisfaction (with educational experience and attending the same institution) variables on retention. In addition, all of the following variables successfully predicted GPA: tutoring, work, satisfaction with educational experience, meetings with faculty and PGI.

Research has validated the fact that student engagement has a significant impact on academic performance, satisfaction with college experience, and graduation rates. Student engagement is the connection that students have, both academically and extracurricular, to their institution. Beyond that, student engagement is the manner in which higher education institutions help to foster student success. Undeniably, African American students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) seem to face greater, perhaps unique, challenges in their quest to obtain a degree. The number of barriers that many of these students face is surreal, and the impact that HBCUs have on the educational outcomes of their students warrants further exploration. Exploratory in nature, this study examined the relationships between student engagement patterns and academic performance of undergraduate students at a public historically Black higher education institution in the Southeast. This study was ex post facto, since the data from students' responses to the survey items on the 2008 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) had been collected prior to the design of this research study. In an effort to answer the research questions that were posed, the general linear model univariate analysis of variance statistical procedure was employed to model the relationships between the NSSE Benchmarks (i.e., academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, study-faculty interaction, supportive campus environment, and enriching educational experiences) and the outcome variable, student self-reported academic performance. The findings support the conclusion that student engagement has multi-dimensional effects. While a particular independent variable in one model might have had a statistically significant linear relationship with the dependent variable, student self-reported academic performance, that independent variable might not have had a statistically significant linear relationship when other independent variables were added to the model. For the most part, in some models, several of the independent variables did not have an additive effect and failed to contribute to the statistical significance, relationship, or prediction of the dependent variable.

Student success, through persistence to graduation, is a central goal for institutions of higher education, but only a fraction of students who begin college will graduate with a degree. Despite decades of exploration, student retention hovers at a consistent percentage, leaving the goal of degree completion unattained for many college students. Research shows college retention and degree completion vary across different sociodemographic characteristics such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and first-generation status. Research also indicates student engagement in educationally purposeful activity, both inside and outside of the classroom, increases the likelihood of student success across sociodemographic lines. Foundational theory as well as historic and contemporary research provides promising direction for higher education faculty, staff, and administrators to create institution specific plans to increase the chances of student success by increasing student retention in college through improved student engagement (Kinzie & Kuh, 2004). The present study seeks to explore the relationship between college student engagement, socioeconomic status, and persistence. National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) data is used to measure student engagement behaviors among first year college students at a small public residential university in the upper-Midwest. Parent income is used to define socioeconomic status and is matched with student engagement scores defined by the NSSE. Institutional data is used to determine the persistence behaviors of the students participating in this study. Results indicate a small positive relationship between student engagement and persistence suggesting high levels of student engagement increases the likelihood of persistence. No relationship is found between parent income and persistence or parent income and student engagement, suggesting parent income alone may not sufficiently explain socioeconomic differences in student engagement and persistence. Exploring these relationships assist faculty, staff, and administrators develop specific interventions to increase student engagement in experiences shown to improve the likelihood of persistence to degree completion.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational research study was to examine the student engagement variables most likely to predict the academic success and satisfaction of African American male college students. Research suggests that African American males who are actively engaged in campus life gain more from the college experience and are more likely to succeed academically (Harper, 2012; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991, 2005; Strayhorn, 2008b). This investigation used the National Survey of Student Engagement questionnaire to survey 3,000 students to learn what relationships existed between five student engagement variables and the students' perceived satisfaction with their overall college experience. There is a plethora of research that has examined the college experiences, engagement and academic success of minority students in totality (Fleming, 1984; Outcalt & Skewes-Cox, 2002; Strayhorn & DeVita, 2010; Watson & Kuh, 1996; Watson, Terrell, Wright, Bonner, Cuyjet, & Gold, 2002); however limited research exists specifically targeting the correlation between engagement factors and the academic success and college satisfaction of African American males (Greene, 2005; Harvey-Smith, 2002; Kimbrough & Harper, 2006; Outcalt & Skewes-Cox, 2002; Palmer, Davis, & Maramba, 2010). Utilizing a conceptual theory of student involvement based on the work of Astin (1984, 1999) this investigation employed multiple regression analysis to explore the relationship between five student engagement factors (Academic Challenge, Collaborative Learning, Faculty Interaction, Supportive Campus, and Enriching Experiences) and African American males' academic success and overall satisfaction with their college experience. Four research questions directed this study relative to the student engagement factors and institutional characteristics that best predict African American male satisfaction with their college experience. The results indicated that three variables significantly predicted the overall college satisfaction of African American males; Supportive Campus, Faculty Interaction, and Academic Challenge. Additionally, African American males attending private institutions reported a significantly higher mean score relative to their overall satisfaction with their college experience than those attending a public college or university, while no significance was found between African American males attending an historically Black institution as opposed to a predominately white institution. Conclusions drawn from the study lead to further questions surrounding how student engagement is defined and perceived by African American college students and higher education institutions. Further the study draws attention to the need to address and incorporate academic and co-curricular initiatives, services and policies in culture of higher education institutions that will enhance the college experience and ensure academic success, retention and matriculation of African American males.

Book excerpt: Many colleges and universities have a desire to become more student-centered, yet some struggle with establishing what student-centered means to them. Without a clear definition, it is difficult to determine which areas to strengthen in order to become more student-centered. The purpose of this study was to examine results from the National Survey of Student Engagement (nsse) to decipher what variables influence overall student satisfaction with the college experience and to create a statistical model to help define student-centeredness. The driving theory of this study was Alexander Astin's student involvement theory. A connection has been made in this study to link student involvement and student-centeredness. A subset of the nsse national dataset was used to conduct a blocked stepwise regression to determine which student involvement variables influence student satisfaction. The significant predictors of student satisfaction were then used to create a regression model for other colleges and universities to use with their nsse data to determine which of those items best predict satisfaction on their campuses, which will help to define student-centeredness for that institution. The University of Toledo nsse data was used as an example of how the model can be utilized and to demonstrate how the results can help formulate a definition of student-centeredness.
