Book excerpt: Student retention and success literature has revealed a multitude of variables exist that predict retention and academic performance of students during freshmen year. An innovative tool has recently been developed with the purpose of institutional improvement in mind, called the National Survey of Student Engagement. The psychometric properties have been scrutinized and reveal that this survey is a practical instrument to use for institutional improvement purposes. One aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the following variables and student retention: quality of relationships, academic advising, and satisfaction (in terms of with educational experience and attending the same institution). Second, the relationship between the subsequent variables and GPA was assessed: tutoring, internship/co-op experience, work, satisfaction (with educational experience), meetings with faculty, and projected grade index (PGI). Further, this study attempted to address the limitation of previous research of focusing only on retention or success, by identifying the influence of a variety of variables on both retention and academic performance variables all in one study. Results showed a significant influence of the quality of relationships, and satisfaction (with educational experience and attending the same institution) variables on retention. In addition, all of the following variables successfully predicted GPA: tutoring, work, satisfaction with educational experience, meetings with faculty and PGI.

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is one of the most widely used measures of student engagement. In this study, I examine the relationship between NSSE subscale scores and measures of student academic success. I also examine the extent to which pre-college ability and ethnicity moderate the relationship between engagement scores and academic outcomes. Results indicate that the benchmark academic challenge was a significant predictor of freshmen GPA and the benchmark supportive campus environment was a significant predictor of senior GPA. For the outcome of freshmen retention, both supportive campus environment and active and collaborative learning were significant predictors. Pre-college ability was not a significant moderator of the engagement GPA relationship nor was ethnicity a significant moderator of freshmen retention.

Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between engagement in educationally purposeful activities during the first year of college and academic achievement, persistence, and graduation. The study focused on the impacts of engagement on student outcomes related to academic achievement, persistence, and graduation at a comprehensive university located in the mid-South region of the United States. Differences in engagement and outcomes between first generation and continuing-generation students were also explored. This longitudinal panel study utilized an Input-Environment-Output assessment model for the design and analysis. The input variables consisted of background characteristics including gender, ethnicity, high school preparation, and first-generation status. The chief environmental variable was engagement as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The outcome variables included academic achievement, persistence, and graduation within the six-year reporting cycle for the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) in the state of Kentucky. The results indicated that first-generation students were less well prepared in terms of high school GPA and ACT, typically earned a lower first-year GPA and fewer credits, and were less likely to persist and to graduate compared to continuing-generation students. Those that did graduate, however, did so with a similar GPA to continuing-generation students. The significant predictors of academic achievement at the end of the first year of college were high school GPA and ACT. High school GPA and ACT were also significant predictors of the likelihood of persistence and graduation within six years. Surprisingly, engagement did not emerge as a predictor of the likelihood of persistence or graduation for either first-generation or continuing-generation students nor were there significant differences in engagement between first-generation and continuing-generation students. Significant differences in engagement did, however, emerge according to ethnicity and gender with students of color indicating higher levels of engagement than White students and women being more engaged than men. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are also considered.

Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa’s answer to that question is a definitive no. Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, 45 percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills—including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing—during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise—instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list. Book excerpt: Abstract This investigation explored the contribution of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) in understanding retention among college freshmen enrolled in a large Midwest urban university. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), LASSI results were modeled along with exogenous demographic variables (i.e., age, gender and ethnicity) and exogenous retention indices (i.e., ACT/SAT results and high school cumulative Grade Point Average - GPA). Endogenous variables in the model included college cumulative GPAs of all student participants (n = 483) and their retention records over the course of five academic quarters. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to check for item robustness within each of the ten LASSI scales. Items with significantly smaller factor loadings from each of the ten respective scales were eliminated prior to executing SEM. Asymptotic distribution-free estimates were used to adjust for non-metric variables in the model. Final model indices were X2 (15.9, N = 483) = 18, p = .597, GFI = 1.0, NFI = .969, AGFI = 1.0, RMSEA = .000, AIC = 69.93, and PGFI = .400 and indicate a good fit with the data. No direct path exists between the LASSI scales and either College GPA or retention. However, the construct "Will" was significantly correlated with College GPA, indicating that both attitude and motivation are critically important to student success. Significant paths from Gender to Retention and Gender to College GPA support the likelihood of male students being at greater risk of not persisting. A path from Ethnicity to College GPA also supports previous research suggesting that minority students are at a greater risk. Though the LASSI failed to contribute to a group level analysis of retention, caution is advised in dismissing the instrument as it may have significant clinical relevance (e.g., an academic advisor assisting a student in a one-on-one setting).

In addition, the study measured the predictive value of the multidimensional patterns of student engagement relative to student retention from the first- to second-year, based on the NSSE participants' subsequent enrollment in the Fall 2005. The study also examined the relationship among students' demographic and personal achievement characteristics and levels of student engagement that influence persistence and dropout decisions. An analysis of both past and current literature concerning retention issues revealed that persistence in higher education is a longitudinal process involving more than students' cognitive ability to succeed academically. The present study employed a cross-sectional, correlation design in which a two-group, simultaneous, discriminant analyses were used to address the research questions. Data used for this study were gathered via cross-sectional design from first-year students who enrolled in the fall 2004 semester at Western Kentucky University. The survey was administered toward the end of the spring 2005 semester. Only those students who persisted from the fall 2004 semester to spring 2005 semester participated in the survey. Information sought concerned demographic characteristics, student engagement behaviors, and other variables thought to influence student persistence. Sample participants who persisted were identified though Fall 2005 enrollment records. Results from the present study indicated that academic achievement is a far greater predictor of persistence than student engagement. In addition, the data obtained from this study might also indicate that Spady (1970) and Tinto's (1975) stance that demographic and academic achievement characteristics are the foundation of the longitudinal process of persistence might be key to predicting persistence, particularly among first-year students. In short, while social integration and student engagement are important, academic achievement and preparedness are critical to both social integration and persistence. In other words, while student engagement may be an important factor in persistence in higher education, the basis for success in higher education is academic preparedness. Further investigations of the effects of remedial education on persistence are necessary to determine if this approach actually increases persistence.

While the data examined were limited to the student population enrolled at a rural community college, implications from the study could be meaningful for all institutions of higher education. The investigators examined extant data to determine whether exam scores, graduating high school GPAs/rank, and Pell Grant eligibility could be used as predictor variables in identifying students at-risk of leaving the institution. In addition, key milestones (time of registration, participation in a first year experience (FYE) course, declaring a major) were also examined to determine whether these events predicted retention. The study utilized a mixed methods approach analyzing quantitative data through linear regressions and Chi Squares that were obtained through agency records and closed-ended survey questions, while qualitative data was acquired through open-ended survey questions. Participants included 97 first-time freshmen enrolled at a southwest Missouri rural community college during the Fall 2015 semester and 1,150 students enrolled at the college between Fall 2011 and Fall 2013. The Fall 2015 first-time freshmen were asked to complete an online 24-item survey designed to extract both quantitative and qualitative data. The researchers found that ACT and Compass scores (with the exception of Compass Writing), and High School GPA/rank were strong predictors in determining first to second semester retention; however Pell Grant eligibility was found to be insignificant. Although the key milestones of time of registration, participation in a FYE course, and declaring a major were found to be insignificant in predicting retention rates of freshmen students, the qualitative data gathered suggested that the examined milestones had merit for a retention model.
