Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a music sight-reading program would affect the language reading fluency levels and music sight-reading abilities of students enrolled in band in middle school. Music reading and language reading share similar visual and aural tasks that are part of the essential decoding process (Hansen, Bernstorf, & Stuber, 2007). The sight-reading process in both types of reading also requires similar eye movements and the use of structural units for fluency (Sloboda, 1985; Register, Darrow, Standley, & Swedberg, 2007). Researchers have found that sight-singing can impact language reading fluency levels, but there is minimal research on possible connections between instrumental sight-reading and language reading fluency (Biggs, Dedrick, & Homan, 2005, 2006). The current study was undertaken to determine the effect of a sight-reading program on language reading fluency and music sight-reading ability. Two intact middle school band classes were randomly assigned to function as the experimental group and the control group in this study. Florida Department of Education oral reading fluency exams and the Watkins-Farnum Performance Scale, Form A and B for sight-reading ability were administered to all students (N=55) at the beginning and end of data collection. The experimental group experienced a 14-week sight-reading program during the interim. Analysis of Covariance was used to check for differences between the groups' reading fluency and sight-reading posttest scores using pretest scores as the covariate. No significant difference was found between the oral reading fluency posttest, F (1, 28) = .16, p = .69, scores of the control and experimental groups. No significant difference was found between the music sight-reading posttest level scores, F (1, 45) = 1.78, p = .19, of the experimental and control groups. A significant, positive correlation ( r = .61, p = .000) was found between the oral reading fluency and music sight-reading posttest scores of all participants.

This study found a positive correlation between the ISAT test and the Music Ace scores in the fifth grade. There were no correlations between reading and music tests in the fifth grade. This study found no correlation between reading literacy and music reading fluency in the fourth grade.

Level of pretest RWR scores, sex, and age were identified as variables in the study. The purpose of the study was 1) to evaluate the RWR gains of fifth grade students of below normal RWR who were given a six-week program of daily note-reading practice on a keyboard instrument, and 2) to compare these results with the RWR gain of fifth grade students of below normal RWR who were not given the program of daily note-reading practice, when pretest RWR scorews, sex, and age were held constant. The research was a separate sample pretest-posttest experimental-control equivalent materials true-experimental design. Acievement in RWR was sampled in one grade level of below normal readers who were enrolled in remedial reading classes. The instrument used for measurement was the "Basic Reading Rate Scale" (BRRS), Forms A and B, by Miles A. Tinker and revised by Ronald P. Carver. The sample of thirty-six subjects consisted of students who were enrolled in fifth grade remedial reading classes in the six elementary schools of the Grandview Consolidated School District No. 4, Grandview, Missouri. All schools have predominantly white populations and are in the lower-through upper-middle socio-economic bracket. Although all subjects in fifth grade remedial reading were used, eighteen subjects were randomly designated as the experimental group, and seventeen were randomly designated as the control group. Complete sets of data for thirty-three subjects were obtained. Form A of the BRRS was administered as the pretest. Subjects in the experimental group were instructed to practice for speed for ten minutes each school day for six weeks on specially-prepared note-reading sheets. These exercises increased gradually in difficulty according to numbers of notes played. All subjects were then post-tested with Form B of the BRRS, and the data were computer-processed for statistical significance by one-way analysis of variance. Planned comparisons were analyzed by a Scheffé test of difference between means. No significant gain in RWR was demonstrated by subjects in the experimental group as a whole, but subjects who pretested in the lower half of the group did increase significantly over the control group. No significant difference was demonstrated according to sex or age. Within the limitations and circumstances of the investigation, the program of note-reading practice appears to have been effective onnly for increasing the RWR of very slow readers. Further investigation under other circumstances is warrented before positive conclusions can be reached.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Sight-reading, the act of performing unfamiliar music at sight, is a valued measure of an instrumentalist's musical training and overall musicianship. Though sight-reading is recognized as an important ability, little is known about the process or how best to prepare students for sight-reading situations. Previous research has suggested the importance of rhythm, finding that most sight-reading errors are rhythm errors, and rhythmic ability is often a strong predictor of sight-reading accuracy. Related research has investigated a variety of approaches to rhythm instruction, including mathematical (numbers-based) approaches and speech cue (word-based) methods. Many studies have suggested that the latter approach may be more suitable to school-age musicians, especially younger students who may lack the conceptual understanding needed to grasp mathematical models. Other research has affirmed the importance of providing students with opportunities to respond individually and receive regular feedback from their instructor. The current study employed two parallel rhythmic instruction strategies in an effort to determine their impact on middle school band members' sight-reading performance. The control group reviewed rhythms using a previously-learned numerical counting system while a treatment group reviewed rhythms using an original speech cue method and performed individually at scheduled intervals. Sight-reading pretests and posttests were scored and compared to measure subjects' sight-reading accuracy. Results showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups on the sight-reading posttest. Mean scores for all subjects, regardless of treatment grouping, improved from pretest to posttest, including significant gains on pitch accuracy and total sight-reading scores. Additionally, important relationships were found regarding the interplay between pitch reading and rhythm reading during melodic sight-reading, suggesting that these processes present two separate and sometimes conflicting tasks. Overall results and an analysis of the scores of top sight-readers reaffirmed the importance of rhythmic ability in determining overall sight-reading accuracy.

Book excerpt: Playing music at first sight involves coordination of auditory, visual, spatial and kinesthetic systems to produce an accurate and musical performance (Hayward, 2009). Accurately performing pitch and rhythm in tandem has been observed to be difficult in a sight-reading task. Musicians' rhythm reading ability has been found to be the best predictor of sight-reading performance (Elliott, 1982). It may be conjectured that stable and consistent internal pulse is necessary to perform accurate rhythms. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between an individual's timekeeping ability and performance on rhythmic sight-reading tasks. Fifty-three wind, string or percussion instrumentalists participated in one rhythmic sight-reading and three timekeeping evaluations in two separate sessions. The sight-reading evaluation included rhythmic excerpts that increased in difficulty as participants performed the exercises out loud with a neutral spoken syllable. The timekeeping evaluations involved silently reading rhythms and keeping steady beat with and without visual notation while tapping at specified points. Absolute deviations from the target performance were analyzed in relation to performance on the sight-reading evaluation. Participants were also asked to report any specific strategies used in performing the rhythm reading or timekeeping tasks. There was no significant correlation between the sight-reading evaluation and tests of internal timekeeping. A significant correlation was found between tasks involving rhythm reading and tasks focusing on timekeeping. Analysis of strategies indicated no difference in accuracy between participants who employed strategies and those who did not. Supplementary analyses were completed to determine possible reasons for the dichotomy of rhythm reading and timekeeping. Results suggested that participants had difficulty maintaining tempo rather than misreading rhythms or placing taps at incorrect points. These data suggest that timekeeping and rhythm reading are two separate tasks. This contradicts the initial assumption that participants who perform well on rhythmic sight-reading examples would have strong time keeping ability.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to test new ways of improving the sight-reading process in music. This experimental study has been split into two identical studies completed in different settings. The first study utilized 56 volunteer wind instrumentalists from a high school band as subjects, while the second study utilized 30 volunteer wind instrumentalists from a college band as subjects. The same pretest-posttest experiment was used for each study. The subjects were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group, while two short musical excerpts were composed to use for the experiment. The pretest excerpt was unaltered to determine natural tendencies of accents during the sight-reading process for each group. The posttest excerpt had the accent marks printed in red ink for the experimental group only, while the control group read the excerpt in unaltered black ink. All of the tests were audio-recorded, and the subjects filled out a questionnaire of additional information after the posttest. After the recordings were evaluated to determine if the subjects performed the accents, the results were revealing. The high school study showed that only 16% of subjects performed accents during the pretest, and the posttest showed 43% of subjects in the experimental group performed accents. The college study showed that 40% of subjects performed accents during the pretest, and the posttest showed 93% of subjects in the experimental group performed accents. The questionnaire showed that lessons, older subjects (in high school only), and brass players typically performed accents more consistently. College subjects also clearly performed the accents more than did high school subjects.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of instrumental training on the music notation reading abilities of high school choral musicians. Subjects (N = 46) were members of two curricular choral ensembles who engaged in contrasting treatments between pretest and posttest assessments. Survey results indicated musical backgrounds and experiences of the sample, in addition to a demographic profile with regard to age, grade level, and gender. Subjects were placed in subgroups dependent upon 1) their instrumental ensemble experience and 2) whether they had at least one year of private piano study. Throughout the 6-week 300-minute treatment, members of the control group experienced a vocal-only approach to sight-singing, and the experimental group a vocal-instrumental approach, using keyboards. Pretest to posttest score comparisons were made in various configurations within the sample. Significant differences were found to exist between pretest scores of subjects with and without at least one year of private piano study, but not between students with and without instrumental ensemble experience. There was a significant improvement from pretest to posttest scores within the two groups, but not between. Control group subjects without instrumental ensemble experience and with at least one year of private piano study showed significant improvement in pretest to posttest scores. In the experimental group, subjects with instrumental ensemble experience, and those with and without at least one year of private piano study showed significant improvement from pretest to posttest scores. Examination of statistical results and raw score analysis indicated the vocal-instrumental method to be more effective in training high school choral musicians to sight-sing. Background factors, particularly piano experience, were found to have a positive effect on sight-singing achievement. Further research investigating the impact of antecedent factors to sight-singing achievement may assist educators, parents, and curriculum specialists in designing comprehensive school music programs that realize the potential of student ability in the area of reading music notation.
