Book excerpt: We present preliminary results on an experimental study of the nuclear modification of the longitudinal ($\sigma_L$) and transverse ($\sigma_T$) structure functions of nucleons bound in nuclear targets. The origin of these modifications (commonly referred as as the EMC effect) is not fully understood. Our measurements of R= $\sigma_L / \sigma_T$ for nuclei ($R_A$) and for deuterium ($R_D$) indicate that nuclear modifications of the structure functions of bound nucleons are different for the longitudinal and transverse structure functions, and that contrary to expectation from several theoretical models, $R_A

Book Synopsis The Structure of the Nucleon by : Anthony W. Thomas
Download or read book The Structure of the Nucleon written by Anthony W. Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-11-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the only stable baryon, the nucleon is of crucial importance in particle physics. Since the nucleon is a building block for all atomic nuclei, there is a need to analyse the its structure in order to fully understand the essential properties of all atomic nuclei. After more than forty years of research on the nucleon, both the experimental and theoretical situations have matured to a point where a synthesis of the results becomes indispensable. Here, A.W. Thomas and W. Weise present a unique report on the extensive empirical studies, theoretical foundations and the different models of the nucleon. The appendices provide an extensive summary of formulae needed in practical calculations. From the contents: electromagnetic structure of the nucleon, weak probes of nucleon structure, deep inelastic lepton scattering on the nucleon; elements of QCD, aspects of non-perturbative QCD, Chiral Symmetry and nucleon structure, models of the nucleon
Book Synopsis The Spin Structure Of The Nucleon by : Bernard Frois
Download or read book The Spin Structure Of The Nucleon written by Bernard Frois and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-02-24 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy and nuclear physics laboratories (CERN, DESY, SLAC and Jefferson Lab) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.
Book Synopsis Spin Structure Of The Nucleon - Proceedings Of The The Riken Symposium by : Toshi-aki Shibata

This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After about three decades of experimental and theoretical efforts, the structure of the nucleon (proton and neutron) is now fairly well understood based on quantum chromodynamics, but only if averaged over its spin. As the recent “proton spin crisis” revealed, we do not understand much about the nucleon structure when its spin is polarized to a specific orientation. We expect that our understanding on this challenging problem will soon be significantly improved by the RHIC-Spin and other experiments in the near future, as well as by the lattice- and perturbative-QCD theoretical calculations. The purpose of this symposium was to summarize the current understanding and discuss the future perspective of this problem with experimental and theoretical physicists from both high-energy and nuclear physics communities. The symposium covered the overview of the structure studies, updates on the experimental results from CERN, SLAC, DESY, FNAL, and KEK, future experiments at RHIC, and recent theoretical developments (18 presentations, 113 participants).

This book was released on 1992-08-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental investigations of deep inelastic scattering, baryon form factors and high momentum transfer nuclear reactions have revealed many unexpected phenomena that suggest deep relationships between nucleon structure, hadronic spectroscopy and quantum chromodynamics. The proceedings of this summer school will help young researchers understand these topics and appreciate the importance of existing and expected data. This volume is the first of a series on the summer schools and workshops at the Institute for Nuclear Theory, which was opened at the University of Washington following the recommendation of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. The formation of this national institute was a response by the nuclear physics comunity to the shortage of nuclear theorists vis-a-vis experimentalists.

Book Synopsis Contribution of Twist-4 to the Q2 Evolution of F2 and XF3 by :
Download or read book Contribution of Twist-4 to the Q2 Evolution of F2 and XF3 written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of the theoretical and experimental study of higher twist contributions to the nucleon structure functions is reviewed. After noting the dangers of combining experiments with widely different Q2 and targets, emphasis is placed on those results coming from a single experiment. The values of .lambda., the twist-2 scale factor, and h4, the coefficient of x/Q2(1-x), are restricted by: .lambda.

Book Synopsis Experimental Moments of the Nucleon Structure Function F2 by :
Download or read book Experimental Moments of the Nucleon Structure Function F2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental data on the F2 structure functions of the proton and deuteron, including recent results from CLAS at Jefferson Lab, have been used to construct their n=12 moments. A comprehensive analysis of the moments in terms of the operator product expansion has been performed to separate the moments into leading and higher twist contributions. Particular attention was paid to the issue of nuclear corrections in the deuteron, when extracting the neutron moments from data. The difference between the proton and neutron moments was compared directly with lattice QCD simulations. Combining leading twist moments of the neutron and proton we found the d/u ratio at x-1 approaching 0, although the precision of the data did not allow to exclude the 1/5 value. The higher twist components of the proton and neutron moments suggest that multi-parton correlations are isospin independent.
Book Synopsis Statistical Models for Nucleon Structure Function by : Carlos Alberto Mirez Tarrillo
Download or read book Statistical Models for Nucleon Structure Function written by Carlos Alberto Mirez Tarrillo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure function describes how energy/momentum is distributed among the quarks/gluon inside a nucleon. This is estimated from the deep inelastic scattering of electrons or muon with the nucleon, or even with nucleon-nucleon scattering. This book reviews several statistic/thermodynamic models for both polarized and unpolarized structure function, with additional applications, such as the study of the EMC effect. It will appeal to both researchers and students of hadronic and nuclear/particle physics.

Book Synopsis N* Physics and Nonperturbative Quantum Chromodynamics by : Silvano Simula
Download or read book N* Physics and Nonperturbative Quantum Chromodynamics written by Silvano Simula and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-05-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop N* Physics and non-perturbative QeD was held at the Eu ropean Center for Theoretical Studies and Related Areas (ECT*) in Trento, Italy, during May 18-29, 1998. Previous workshops of the series on N* Physics took place at the Florida State University (1994), at CEBAF (1995), at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle (1996) and at the George Washington University (1997). The Workshop was devoted to a summary of recent experimental and the oretical research on N* phsyics and special emphasis was given to the infor mation that photo-and electro-production of nucleon resonances can provide on the non-perturbative regime of Quantum Chromodynamics. The idea was to stimulate discussions among experimentalists and theoreticians in order to pursue the interpretation of the huge amount of forthcoming data from several laboratories in the world. It was therefore decided to have both experimental and theoretical lectures on the main topics, like ,among the others, single and double pion production, TJ-and K-meson production, the GDH sum rule, the spin of the proton, etc. Thanks to the unusual two-week extension of the Work shop, the allotted time for the lectures was extended up to one hour in order to allow the invited lecturers to give a detailed presentation of their topics. Fi nally, various short contributions were selected to sharpen the discussion about selected items.

Book Synopsis Spin Structure of the Nucleon by : Erhard Steffens
Download or read book Spin Structure of the Nucleon written by Erhard Steffens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the most recent results from the field of quark-gluon structure of the nucleon, in particular how the spin of the nucleon is shared by its constituents. After very intriguing results from CERN and SLAC at the end of the 1980s, the last decade has seen a set of second-generation experiments at high energy accelerators that have yielded precise information on the solution of the 'Spin Crisis' - as well as opening up new questions. The articles are written by experts from the leading collaboration and theory groups as well as providing an expert summary of the state of the art, the book points the way to future research directions. Its main focus is on semi-inclusive and exclusive measurements of deep inelastic lepton scattering, which enables for the first time the determination of the flavor-separated quark spin distributions. Future developments on generalized parton distributions and their interpretation as well as the transverse spin structure are also covered. An indispensable volume for all working in hadronic physics.
