Book excerpt: Vienna, 1909. When the celebrated actor Eugen Bischoff is found dead in his garden pavilion, suspicion falls immediately on Baron von Yosch, a well-to-do army officer who was once the lover of the dead man s wife. By all appearances the door was locked from the inside when the two shots rang out the actor took his own life, but someone, or something, drove him to it. The baron sets out to learn all he can about the actor s death in order to clear his name. Meanwhile, within a few days, similar apparent suicides are reported. What started out as a straightforward quest to establish Bischoff s last deeds and discover the truth of his death becomes a search through the ages for an invisible enemy identified only by the actor s dying breath, when he whispered: . . . the Day of Judgment. Leo Perutz combines his hallmark blend of suspense and the fantastic in this spine-tingling mystery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Useful to both professional persuaders and students of media effects, this book presents theories and empirical research on methods of social influence, including advertising, agenda-setting, propaganda, public relations, and public communication campaigns. The reader first learns how source credibility affects persuasion and the theories that account for persuasion effects, followed by research on the third-person effect – the belief that others are affected by persuasion attempts, but not ourselves. A chapter on the effects of advertising follows, including effects on children, and research on subliminal messages. The third chapter presents theories and research on the notion of agenda-setting, and the finding that while the media may not be overly effective in persuasion, it is effective in getting the audience to believe issues covered by the media are the most important facing society. The final chapter covers the history of propaganda, the development of public relations, and the effectiveness of government campaigns, such as the Smokey the Bear campaign and various health campaigns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new combination volume of three-books-in-one, dealing with the topic of artifacts in behavioral research, was designed as both introduction and reminder. It was designed as an introduction to the topic for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and younger researchers. It was designed as a reminder to more experienced researchers, in and out of academia, that the problems of artifacts in behavioral research, that they may have learned about as beginning researchers, have not gone away. For example, problems of experimenter effects have not been solved. Experimenters still differ in the ways in which they see, interpret, and manipulate their data. Experimenters still obtain different responses from research participants (human or infrahuman) as a function of experimenters' states and traits of biosocial, psychosocial, and situational origins. Experimenters' expectations still serve too often as self-fulfilling prophecies, a problem that biomedical researchers have acknowledged and guarded against better than have behavioral researchers; e.g., many biomedical studies would be considered of unpublishable quality had their experimenters not been blind to experimental condition. Problems of participant or subject effects have also not been solved. We usually still draw our research samples from a population of volunteers that differ along many dimensions from those not finding their way into our research. Research participants are still often suspicious of experimenters' intent, try to figure out what experimenters are after, and are concerned about what the experimenter thinks of them.
