This book describes the types of stuttering that may appear in many different psychological and physical settings. Organized into seven chapters, this book starts with a discussion of the definition of stuttering, which usually refers to particular forms of interruption to the free flow of speech with sufficient frequency to considerably impede verbal communication. This text then discusses several matters, including sex ratios of stutterers, incidence of stuttering, and prognosis of the disorder. Other chapters explain how the idea of psychological causation for stuttering developed. This book discusses as well the common observation that the stutterer appears to have a usually higher level of anxiety that the nonstutterer. The final chapter deals with the three significant procedures that have been used as methods for the modification of stuttering. This book is a valuable resource for psychologists and psychiatrists.

Book Synopsis Language Processing and Simultaneous Interpreting by : Birgitta Englund Dimitrova
Download or read book Language Processing and Simultaneous Interpreting written by Birgitta Englund Dimitrova and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-11-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers from the areas of psychology, general linguistics, psycholinguistics, as well as from simultaneous interpreting. Their common focus is how theories and methodologies from various disciplines can be applied to the study of simultaneous interpreting, and also to suggest ways in which the study of simultaneous interpreting in its turn might contribute to knowledge in other areas. General topics dealt with include memory, language processing, bilingual processing, and second language acquisition. The articles more specifically focused on simultaneous interpreting discuss implications of the general topics and report on empirical studies on expertise in interpreting and on phonological interference in spoken language interpreting. Requirements for further interdisciplinary research in the context of simultaneous interpreting are considered. There is also a discussion of transcription conventions for simultaneous interpreting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurobiology of Language explores the study of language, a field that has seen tremendous progress in the last two decades. Key to this progress is the accelerating trend toward integration of neurobiological approaches with the more established understanding of language within cognitive psychology, computer science, and linguistics. This volume serves as the definitive reference on the neurobiology of language, bringing these various advances together into a single volume of 100 concise entries. The organization includes sections on the field's major subfields, with each section covering both empirical data and theoretical perspectives. "Foundational" neurobiological coverage is also provided, including neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, genetics, linguistic, and psycholinguistic data, and models. - Foundational reference for the current state of the field of the neurobiology of language - Enables brain and language researchers and students to remain up-to-date in this fast-moving field that crosses many disciplinary and subdisciplinary boundaries - Provides an accessible entry point for other scientists interested in the area, but not actively working in it – e.g., speech therapists, neurologists, and cognitive psychologists - Chapters authored by world leaders in the field – the broadest, most expert coverage available
Book Synopsis Speech and Language by : Norman J. Lass
Download or read book Speech and Language written by Norman J. Lass and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speech and Language: Volume 3, Advances in Basic Research and Practice is a compendium of papers that discusses theories, clinical issues, and pathology of language and speech. Some papers discuss theories of phonological development, the encoding/decoding system of language, and the application of phonological universals in speech pathology. Other papers deal with the role of the speech-language clinician, a psychological framework for speech perception, and the formulation of a model for biomechanical analysis of velopharyngeal structure and function. Several papers analyze speech control mechanisms in skilled and non-skilled speakers, the rationale for the delayed auditory feedback (DAF) treatment program, and biofeedback in relation to speech pathology. One paper cites a study of Williams (1974) that shows strategies used in learning a new phonetic system depend upon whether the speaker is still within the critical period for language learning or already well beyond it. The paper notes that if adults can ignore their previously learned sound system and be childlike again in their freedom to experiment and be sensitivity to their own results, then they can achieve supra-segmental and segmental nuances of a new language. The compendium can prove helpful for linguists, ethnologists, psychologists, speech therapists, researchers in linguistics or communications, and general readers interested in speech or learning issues.

Book Synopsis Cognitive Psychology and Information Processing by : R. Lachman
Download or read book Cognitive Psychology and Information Processing written by R. Lachman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979. Basic research, at its essence, is exploration of the unknown. When it is successful, isolated pieces of reality are deciphered and described. Most of the history of an empirical discipline consists of probes into this darkness-some bold, others careful and systematic. Most of these efforts are initially incorrect. At best, they are distant approximations to a reality that may not be correctly specified for centuries. How, then, can we describe the fragmented knowledge that characterizes a scientific discipline for most of its history? A dynamic field of science is held together by its paradigm. The author’s think it is essential to adequate scientific education to teach paradigms, and believe that there is an effective method. The method emphasizes the integral nature, rather than the objective correctness, of a given set of consensual commitments. They believe that paradigmatic content can be effectively combined with the technical research literature commonly presented in scientific texts. This book represents the culmination of those beliefs.
