This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetohydrodynamics is concerned with the motion of electrically conducting fluids in the presence of electric or magnetic fields. Un fortunately, the subject has a rather poorly developed experimental basis and because of the difficulties inherent in carrying out controlled laboratory experiments, the theoretical developments, in large measure, have been concerned with finding solutions to rather idealized problems. This lack of experimental basis need not become, however, a multi megohm impedance in the line of progress in the development of a satisfactory scientific theory. While it is true that ultimately a scientific theory must agree with and, in actuality, predict physical phenomena with a reasonable degree of accuracy, such a theory must be sanctioned by its mathematical validity and consistency. Physical phenomena may be expressed precisely and quite comprehensively through the use of differential equations, and the equations formulated by LUNDQUIST and discussed by FRIEDRICHS belong to a class of equations particularly well-understood and extensively studied. This class includes, in fact, many other eminent members, the solutions of which have led to results of far-reaching scientific and technological application. Frequently, the mathematical analysis has provided the foundations and guidance necessary for further developments, and, reciprocally, the physical problems have provided, in many cases, the impetus for the development of new mathematical theories which often have evolved to an a priori unpredictable extent.

Book Synopsis Liquid Metal Magnetohydrodynamics by : J.J. Lielpeteris
Download or read book Liquid Metal Magnetohydrodynamics written by J.J. Lielpeteris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid metal MHO is within the scope of two series of international conferences. One is the International Congress on "MHD Power Generation", held every four years, which includes technical and economical aspects as well as scientific questions. The other if the Beer-Sheva Seminar on "MHO Flows and Turbulence", held every three years in Israel. In addition to these well established meetings, an IUTAM Symposium was previously organized in Cambridge (UK) in 1982 on "Metallurgical Applications of MHD" by the late Arthur Shercliff. It was focussed on a very specific subject developing radiply from the middle of the 1970's. The magnetic field was generally AC, including frequencies high enough for the skin-depth to be much smaller than the typical length scale of the liquide pool. And the development of new technologies, or the improvement of existing ones, was the main justification of most of the researches presented and discussed. Only two participants from Eastern countries attended this Symposium. By the middle of the 1980's we felt that on this very same topic ideas had reached much more maturity than in 1982. We also realized that a line of research on MHD flows related to fusion reactors (tokamaks) was developing significantly, with particular emphasis on flows at large interaction parameter.

Book Synopsis Heat and Mass Transfer in MHD Flows by : Elm?rs Bl?ms
Download or read book Heat and Mass Transfer in MHD Flows written by Elm?rs Bl?ms and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1987 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of heat and mass transfer processes by means of external force effects is one of the most important problems in modern applied physics. This book is devoted to the study of the magnetic field effect as it bears on transfer phenomena: heat and mass transfer. In conducting media, this influence is mainly due to the induced electric current and the interaction of the current with the magnetic field, whereas in magnetizable fluids, molecular or colloidal solution, transfer phenomena are directly affected by the field. When analysing heat and mass transfer in multiphase magnetizing media, only those phenomena which could be described in terms of conventional quasi-stationary approximation are considered. The effects assoicated with the non-equilibrium magnetization of the system and particle interaction receive special attention here. The problem studied here have been considered with a view to possible applications, particularly in biology and medicine.
Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of the Thermomechanics of Pipe Flow of Magnetic Fluids in Response to Heating and Applied Magnetic Fields by : Hooshyar M. Hamedani

Hamedani and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the thermodynamics and fluid mechanics of the pipe flow of magnetic fluids. A water-based magnetic fluid was synthesized in the laboratory and its relative viscosity and magnetic properties were determined as a function of temperature. A "thermomagnetic pump" was built and tested in which temperature differences caused the magnetic fluid to circulate through a loop when subjected to a magnetic field. In a conceptual study, the pumping capabilities of such a flow circulation were considered for a thermal rejection system application. Pumping capabilities were observed to be directly related to the slope of the pyromagnetic curve. The sensitivity of the fluid was enhanced by the addition of zinc, manganese, and cobalt compounds. Fluid properties and flow parameters, including viscosity, magnetization, velocity, pressure, and temperature, were determined. A theoretical analysis was conducted for the prediction of values and analysis of the nature of the magnetic body forces induced in a magnetic fluid in the presence of heat and magnetic fields. A technique is introduced for the prediction of the maximum pressure difference that a "thermomagnetic pump" could produce. The advantages of a thermomagnetic pump are that it is noise free and reliable due to the absence of moving parts and control devices. At present, however, the flow rates generated by such a system are small and much research and development is needed for practical applications.

Book Synopsis Effects of a Magnetic Field on the Hypervelocity Flow about a Blunt Body by : Richard W. Ziemer
Download or read book Effects of a Magnetic Field on the Hypervelocity Flow about a Blunt Body written by Richard W. Ziemer and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made of the effect of an applied magnetic field on the bow shock of a blunt body in hypervelocity air flow. Quantitative measurements of the stand-off distance were made in a three-inch electromagnetic shock tube with free-stream velocities up to 22,000 feet per second. The test body was a hemispherical cylinder containing a coaxial pulsed magnet coil in the nose which produced field strengths at the stagnation point of up to 40 kilogauss. The application of the magnetic field displaced the bow shock upstream and the stand-off distance increased by a factor of 7.5 for the condition, nondimensional parameter = 69. The experimental results were compared with theory and good agreement was obtained within the range of experimental conditions. (Author).
Book Synopsis Electrically Induced Vortical Flows by : V. Bojarevi°s

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every scientific subject probably conceals unexplored or little investigated strata, which may show up at the proper time when favourable conditions coincide (practical demands, a circle of scientists prepared to recognize the novelty and capable of giving impetus to the development of a new theory, etc.). Something like this occurred in early seventies for magnetohydrodynamics, which at the time was considered to be a relatively complete branch of hydro dynamics with no apparent broad, unexplored areas. It was unexpectedly realized that, in addition to the traditional methods of affecting an electrically conducting medium, there is yet another way, one which subsequently lead to a new direction in magnetohydrodynamics. In the Soviet scientific literature this direction has been termed 'electrically induced vortex flows', the essence of which are hydrodynamic effects due to the interaction of an electric current passing through the fluid with its own magnetic field. It cannot be said that this direction was created ex nihilo: individual studies related to the flows driven in a current-carrying medium in the absence of external magnetic fields appeared in the sixties; in the thirties the flows them selves were known to take place within electrical arcs; and yet the first observa tions on the behaviour of liquid current-carrying conductors were made at the beginning of this century.
