Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has been undertaken to examine the type of loading imposed on the horizontal tail of an airplane model due to an intense blast-induced gust which strikes from a direction normal to the flight path. A comparison of the time histories of the incremental load coefficient for the wing and tail surfaces indicated that, for an angle of attack well above the stall condition, a traveling load peak was present on both the wing and tail surfaces and that the load peaks were equal in magnitude. These load peaks are attributed to a vortex formation produced by the diffraction of the shock wave around the leading edge of the airfoil. The similarity of the loading on the wing and tail continued until the tail was affected by the downwash from the wing. When this condition occurred the loading on the tail decreased abruptly.

Pierce and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An initial experimental investigation has been completed on the aerodynamic load imposed on the wing of an airplane model by a blast-induced gust which increased the angle of attack well beyond the stall angle. Pressure distributions at intervals of 1 millisecond were derived along the wing chord. Comparison of these distributions with distributions obtained from steady-flow wind-tunnel tests and potential-flow calculations showed that neither of the latter methods was adequate to predict the loads in the transient conditions of the blast. A traveling peak of negative pressure was disclosed that is believed to be of significance for the high angle-of-attack case. It was attributed to a vortex formed by the diffraction of the blast wave around the wing. The normal-force coefficients obtained from the flight pressure distributions were approximately twice those predicted from wind-tunnel tests for the first 12 milliseconds after blast arrival or for about 75 percent of the time the angle of attack was above the stall.

Book excerpt: Six experiments were conducted to measure the transient character of the airloads induced by the interaction of blast generated shock waves on a moving airfoil. The tests were conducted on a rigid (airloads) model of swept planform, similar in type to a B47/B52 aircraft. Airfoil motion was simulated by the shock tube which produced a jet flow of Mach 0.7. Shock waves were generated by explosive charges which were varied in sized and proximity to obtain airloads on the wing that changed both the angle of attack and blast duration through a range from small to large. The wing specimens were heavily instrumented with pressure transducers to measure the time history of the variation in the airloads. Response of the wing to the airloads was measured by strain gages and accelerometers. Pressure instrumentation was also used to measure the character of the blast environment. Blast parameters were varied to obtain induced airloads with nominal values for the angle of attack of 8, 20 and 30 degrees. At each of these angles of attack, an experiment was run with a short and long duration shock wave to study the effect of decay rate on the airloads. (Author).
