Book excerpt: A combination of visual and quantitative measurements is presented, providing a physical picture of the turbulent boundary layer flow structure on a flat plate. The flow structure is shown to consist of three zones, each zone has a one to one correspondence to the well known regions of the u+, y+ mean velocity profile. A wall layer region is shown to exist below y+ = 10. An apparently fully turbulent region exists corresponding to the logarithmic ''law of the wall'' and the ''buffer'' region. An intermittent zone appears to agree closely with the ''wake'' deviation region. An entirely new result of the investigation is the delineation of the structure of the wall layer region. This region is shown to contain a relatively regular structure of low and high velocity fluid streaks alternating in the span direction, together with the ejection of low momentum fluid into the outer flow. Correlations are given for the rate of ejection and the streak spacing. A qualitative description of other features of the wall layer region and the character of the remainder of the boundary layer flow structure is presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: This project combines both experimental video flow visualization studies and theoretical investigations of a series of phenomenological and theoretical models based upon the three-dimensional details of convected, coherent structural elements of a turbulent flow as it interacts with a solid surface. The progress over the past year has led to the experimental consideration of range of sub-problems including high Reynolds Number (4,000,000) turbulent flows, the effect of surface modification on low-speed streak formation, and the effect of vortex loop interaction with a solid boundary. To augment the visualization pictures, a computerized video-digitizing system has been developed. Preliminary results show tremendous promise for obtaining quantitative data from flow visualization pictures. The specific thrust of the theoretical studies has been focussed on three areas: (1) how two- and three-dimensional vortex structures interact with wall boundary layers, (2) the development of a new type of prediction method for two-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer flows, and (3) improvement in numerical techniques for solving parabolic, boundary-layer equations. Book excerpt: Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Flow control experiments have been widely investigated since 1930's. Several flow control technique has been explored and have shown potential benefit. But the choice of control technique depends largely on the boundary condition and the type of application. Hence, friction drag of subsonic transport aircraft is intended to be reduced within the scope of this Ph. D. topic. Therefore, application of active control method such as microblowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated. A series of experiments have been performed in two different wind tunnel facilities. Wind tunnel from Department of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (LAS) was used for the measurements for moderate Reynolds number range in co-operation with the wind tunnel from Laboratoire de M ́ecanique de Feiret Lille for large Reynolds number range. Measurements are conducted with the help of state-of-the-art techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and electronic pressure sensors.

Book excerpt: This investigation presents experimental results from a study of the structure of a turbulent boundary layer developed by air flow over water waves in a lab wind-wave channel. It was demonstrated that the sheared flow region is two-layered, similar to rough wall boundary layers. The inner layer, adjacent to the wall, is describable by the 'law of the wall' and the outer flow by the 'defect law.' The data were taken in two-dimensional flow with small favorable pressure gradients. The first part of the two-part investigation involved air flow over an initially still water surface on which waves developed in response to wind excitation. In the second part, air was passed over water waves of a single frequency and varied amplitude. The results indicated that within the range of this study the water surface can be classed as aerodynamically rough at wind speeds greater than 12 fps and the flow structure of the boundary layer corresponds to that over a rough wall. The velocity decrement due to surface roughness is shown to be a function of the local root-mean-square wave height. The effect of wave-induced fluctuations in the air is limited to a very close neighborhood of the wavy surface. For the specific combination of wind and wave speeds of this study it was found that while the amplitudes of the horizontal components of the fluctuation decreased with increasing elevation, the vertical component increased. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the fluid dynamic flow in the wing-body junction was made to reveal the existence of large scale, time-dependent structures. These temporal features are discussed relative to the three major parts of the mean flow: the onset boundary layer, the wing-body junction flow characterized by the horseshoe root vortex, and the wing-body junction wake flow. Distinct flow structures, distinguished by bandwidths, were observed in all parts of the flow. One type of structure was due to the distortion of the existing structure of the onset boundary layer by the wing. A second and a third structure were newly created in the flow by the presence of the wing. These unique structures along the body were boundary layer phenomena, clearly distinguishable from ordinary Strouhal-type shedding at the wing trailing edge. The measurements distinguishing the structures were made using applications of two-point spectral correlation analyses of the flow velocities. The application of this estbalished procedure was made possible by modern high speed data techniques. An orderly framework of definitions and discussion is presented around which additional research can be performed to discover the details of the flow structure. (Author).

Book excerpt: This program combines both experimental flow visualization studies with analytical investigations of a series of phenomenological and theoretical models based upon three-dimensional, vortical flow structures developing and interacting in proximity to a solid surface. The experimental program considered a range of sub-problems including the effect of surface modifications on low-speed streak formation and drag, and the effect of vortex loop inter-action with a solid boundary. To augment visual studies, a computerized interface with the video system has been developed which allows quantitative data to be obtained from flow visualization pictures. This book was released on 1966 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation is described in which emphasis is given to revealing the structure of turbulence near the wall in a boundary layer. Measurements made include space-time correlations between the fluctuating wall pressure and the span-wise velocity component w, and between the various velocity components. The velocity correlations include measurements of the space-time correlation of the streamwise component of the fluctuating wall shear stress. Experiments have been conducted in a thick (5 in.) turbulent boundary layer with zero pressure gradient which is produced by natural transition on a smooth surface. Sufficient data have been obtained to allow the proposal of a qualitative model for the structure of turbulence near the wall. The proposed model outlines the sequence of events that results in the production of intense pressure and velocity fluctuations by stretching of the vorticity after it is produced by viscous stresses within and near the edge of the viscous sublayer. The measurements are in qualitative agreement with the model. Qualitative agreement means that the size and shape of the contours of constant correlation and the sign of the measured correlations are in agreement with the proposed model for the turbulent structure. Book excerpt: Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements and hydrogen bubble flow visualization techniques were used to examine the near-wall flow structure of 2D and 3D turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) over a range of low Reynolds numbers. The goals of this research were (1) an increased understanding of the flow physics in the near wall region of turbulent boundary layers, (2) to observe and quantify differences between 2D and 3D TBL flow structures, and (3) to document Reynolds number effects for 3D TBLs. The LDV data have provided results detailing the turbulence structure of the 2D and 3D TBLs. These results include mean Reynolds stress distributions, flow skewing results, and U and V spectra. Effects of Reynolds number for the 3D flow were also examined. Comparison to results with the same 3D flow geometry but at a significantly higher Reynolds number provided unique insight into the structure of 3D TBLs. While the 3D mean and fluctuating velocities were found to be highly dependent on Reynolds number, a previously defined shear stress parameter was discovered to be invariant with Reynolds number. The hydrogen bubble technique was used as a flow visualization tool to examine the near-wall flow structure of 2D and 3D TBLs. Both the quantitative and qualitative results displayed larger turbulent fluctuations with more highly concentrated vorticity regions for the 2D flow.
