This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seldom does a physical system, particularly one as apparently simple as the flow of a Newtonian fluid between concentric rotating cylinders, retain the interest of scientists, applied mathematicians and engineers for very long. Yet, as this volume goes to press it has been nearly 70 years since G. I. Taylor's outstanding experimental and theoretical study of the linear stability of this flow was published, and a century since the first experiments were performed on rotating cylinder viscometers. Since then, the study of this system has progressed enormously, but new features of the flow patterns are still being uncovered. Interesting variations on the basic system abound. Connections with open flows are being made. More complex fluids are used in some experiments. The vigor of the research going on in this particular example of nonequilibrium systems was very apparent at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Ordered and Turbulent Patterns in Taylor Couette Flow," held in Columbus, Ohio, USA May 22-24, 1991. A primary goal of this ARW was to bring together those interested in pattern formation in the classic Taylor Couette problem with those looking at variations on the basic system and with those interested in related systems, in order to better define the interesting areas for the future, the open questions, and the features common (and not common) to closed and open systems. This volume contains many of the contributions presented during the workshop.

Book Synopsis Physics of Rotating Fluids by : Christoph Egbers
Download or read book Physics of Rotating Fluids written by Christoph Egbers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to recent developments in the field of rotating fluids, in particular the study of Taylor--Couette flow, spherical Couette flow, planar Couette flow, as well as rotating annulus flow. Besides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art, possible future directions in this research field are investigated. The first part of this volume presents several new results in the classical Taylor--Couette system covering diverse theoretical, experimental and numerical work on bifurcation theory, influence of boundary conditions, counter-rotating flows, spiral vortices and many others. The second part focuses on spherical Couette flows, including isothermal flows, thermal convective motion, as well as magnetohydrodynamics in spherical shells. The remaining parts are devoted to Goertler vortices, rotating annulus flows, as well as superfluid Couette flows. The present book will be of interest to all researchers and graduate students working actively in the field.

This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Singularities and Groups in Bifurcation Theory by : Martin Golubitsky
Download or read book Singularities and Groups in Bifurcation Theory written by Martin Golubitsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bifurcation theory studies how the structure of solutions to equations changes as parameters are varied. The nature of these changes depends both on the number of parameters and on the symmetries of the equations. Volume I discusses how singularity-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in multiparameter systems. This volume focuses on bifurcation problems with symmetry and shows how group-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in symmetric systems. Four broad topics are covered: group theory and steady-state bifurcation, equicariant singularity theory, Hopf bifurcation with symmetry, and mode interactions. The opening chapter provides an introduction to these subjects and motivates the study of systems with symmetry. Detailed case studies illustrate how group-theoretic methods can be used to analyze specific problems arising in applications.
