Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research objective was to determine the effectiveness of a new device concept for helicopter contact flight training and the usefulness of such a device for predicting performance during subsequent flight training. The device was a commercially available captive helicopter attached to a ground effects machine. Two experimental groups of trainees received 3 1/4 or 7 1/4 hours of device training prior to primary helicopter training. In comparison with control groups, both device trained groups (a) were significantly less likely to be eliminated from subsequent flight training for reasons of flying deficiency; (b) required less flight training to attain the proficiency required to solo the helicopter; and (c) received higher grades during early training. Trainees who performed well on the training device tended to perform well during subsequent flight training. Instructors using devices such as this one need not be proficient in the helicopter used for subsequent flight training. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB Special Report 301: Air Traffic Controller Staffing in the En Route Domain: A Review of the Federal Aviation Administration's Task Load Model examines the structure, empirical basis, and validation methods of a Federal Aviation Administration model that estimates the time controllers spend performing tasks when handling en route traffic. The model's task load output is being used to inform workforce planning. The committee that developed the report concluded that the model is superior to past models because it takes into account traffic complexity when estimating task load. However, the report recommends that more operational and experimental data on task performance be obtained to establish and validate many key model assumptions, relationships, and parameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite growing concern with the effects of concurrent task demands on human performance, and research demonstrating that these demands are associated with vulnerability to error, so far there has been only limited research into the nature and range of concurrent task demands in real-world settings. This book presents a set of NASA studies that characterize the nature of concurrent task demands confronting airline flight crews in routine operations, as opposed to emergency situations. The authors analyze these demands in light of what is known about cognitive processes, particularly those of attention and memory, with the focus upon inadvertent omissions of intended actions by skilled pilots. The studies reported within the book employed several distinct but complementary methods: ethnographic observations, analysis of incident reports submitted by pilots, and cognitive task analysis. They showed that concurrent task management comprises a set of issues distinct from (though related to) mental workload, an area that has been studied extensively by human factors researchers for more than 30 years. This book will be of direct relevance to aviation psychologists and to those involved in aviation training and operations. It will also interest individuals in any domain that involves concurrent task demands, for example the work of emergency room medical teams. Furthermore, the countermeasures presented in the final chapter to reduce vulnerability to errors associated with concurrent task demands can readily be adapted to work in diverse domains.

This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many handling qualities criteria have been developed which predict pilot opinion of landing aircraft. MIL-STD-1797A, 'Flying Qualities of Piloted Aircraft' lists six different criteria. However, applying all six criteria to one aircraft can lead to conflicting results. The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) along with the Flight Dynamics Laboratory have conducted research to evaluate differences among the handling qualities criteria in MIL- STD-1797A. The overall objective of this thesis was to determine similarities and discrepancies between the Control Anticipation Parameter (CAP) and bandwidth criteria, and to evaluate the advantage of including a dropback criterion with the bandwidth criterion. Results of this research will be used to derive a more clear-cut, generally acceptable, comprehensive flying qualities criteria predicting pilot opinion for the next revision of MIL-STD-1797A. Research was conducted in two phases. Phase I was conducted at AFIT. There the CAP domain was mapped onto the bandwidth and bandwidth with dropback criteria revealing where the criteria agreed and disagreed. Phase II was conducted at the USAF Test Pilot School. The test team used the Variable-Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA) to simulate aircraft and obtain actual pilot opinion in the areas of agreement and conflict found in Phase I.
