Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Purdue High Energy Physics Group conducts research in experimental and theoretical elementary particle physics and experimental high energy astrophysics. Our goals, which we share with high energy physics colleagues around the world, are to understand at the most fundamental level the nature of matter, energy, space and time, and in order to explain the birth, evolution and fate of the Universe. The experiments in which we are currently involved are: CDF, CLEO-c, CMS, LSST, and VERITAS. We have been instrumental in establishing two major in-house facilities: The Purdue Particle Physics Microstructure Detector Facility (P3MD) in 1995 and the CMS Tier-2 center in 2005. The research efforts of the theory group span phenomenological and theoretical aspects of the Standard Model as well as many of its possible extensions. Recent work includes phenomenological consequences of supersymmetric models, string theory and applications of gauge/gravity duality, the cosmological implications of massive gravitons, and the physics of extra dimensions.

Book excerpt: The third Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. Christiansted was the site of the first ASI, and it was certainly a delight to return there again. As in the previous ASI's, the aim was to bring together a small group of promising young experimenters and several outstanding senior scholars in experimental and theoretical high energy physics in order to learn about the latest developments in the field and to strengthen contacts among scientists from different countries and different backgrounds. The institute was both a great scientific and a great social success; much of this was due to the beautiful setting and to the dedication of the Hotel management of Ray Boudreau and Hurchell Greenaway and their excellent staff. The primary support for the meeting was once again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Found ation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing nations. As in the case of the previous ASI's, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics.

Book Synopsis Introduction to High Energy Physics by : Donald H. Perkins
Download or read book Introduction to High Energy Physics written by Donald H. Perkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-regarded text provides a comprehensive introduction to modern particle physics. Extensively rewritten and updated, this 4th edition includes developments in elementary particle physics, as well as its connections with cosmology and astrophysics. As in previous editions, the balance between experiment and theory is continually emphasised. The stress is on the phenomenological approach and basic theoretical concepts rather than rigorous mathematical detail. Short descriptions are given of some of the key experiments in the field, and how they have influenced our thinking. Although most of the material is presented in the context of the Standard Model of quarks and leptons, the shortcomings of this model and new physics beyond its compass (such as supersymmetry, neutrino mass and oscillations, GUTs and superstrings) are also discussed. The text includes many problems and a detailed and annotated further reading list.

Book excerpt: The twelfth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Con cepts of High Energy Physics was held at the Hotel on the Cay in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands in June 2002. The Institute attracted 11 lecturers and 42 advanced PhD students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics from 14 different countries. The scientific program covered a broad sweep of topics that are expected to remain of interest for many years to come. The topics in this volume complement those in earlier volumes (published by Kluwer) and should be of interest to many physicists. The main financial support for the Institute was provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Institute was eo-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the Florida State Univer sity (FSU) - Offices of the Provost and the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Physics and the FSU High Energy Physics Group - and the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP, Moscow).
Book Synopsis Task A, High Energy Physics Program Experiment and Theory by :
Download or read book Task A, High Energy Physics Program Experiment and Theory written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effort of the experimental group has been concentrated on the CERN ALEPH and FERMILAB D0 collider experiments and completion of two fixed target experiments. The BNL fixed target experiment 771 took the world's largest sample of D(1285) and E/iota(1420) events, using pion, kaon and antiproton beams. Observing the following resonances: 0[sup [minus plus]] [1280], 1[sup [plus][plus]] [1280], 0[sup [minus plus]] [1420], 0[sup [minus plus]] [1470], 1[sup [plus minus]] [1415]. The Fermilab fixed target experiment E711, dihadron production in pN interactions at 800 GeV, completed data reduction and analysis. The atomic weight dependence, when parameterized as [sigma](A) = [sigma][sub o]A[sup [alpha]], yielded a value of [alpha] = 1.043 [plus minus] 0.011 [plus minus] .012. The cross section per nucleon and angular distributions was also measured as a function of two particle mass and agrees very well with QCD calculations. The D0 Fermilab Collider Experiment E740 began its first data taking run in April 1992. The CERN collider experiment ALEPH at LEP is presently taking more data. The Z mass and width, the couplings to the upper and lower components of the hadronic isospin doublet, forward-backward asymmetries of hadronic events, and measurements of the fragmentation process have been made. The effort of detector development for the SSC has substantially increased with particular emphasis on scintillators, both in fibers and plates. Work has continued on higher-order QCD calculations using the Monte Carlo technique developed previously. This year results for WW, ZZ, WZ, and [sub [gamma][gamma]] production have been published. A method for incorporating parton showering in such calculations was developed and applied to W production. The multicanonical Monte Carlo algorithm has stood up to the promises anticipated; it was used in multicanonical simulations of first-order phase transitions and for spin glass systems.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held once again at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 67 participants, from 17 different countries. It was a great success, due to the dedication of the inspiring lecturers, the exceptional student body, and, of course, the beautiful setting. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contri bution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as· support for worthy students from developing nations. As in the case of the previous ASI's, the'scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first three ASI's, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the encouragement and support that I have continued to receive from colleagues and friends in organizing this meeting. I am indebted to the members of my Advisory Committee for their infinite patience and excellent advice. I am grateful to my distinguished lecturers for participating in the ASI.

This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year, Orbis Scientiae 1976, dedicated to the Bicentennial of the United States of America, was devoted entirely to recent developments in high energy physics. These proceedings contain nearly all of the papers presented at Orbis, held at the Center for Theoretical Studies, University of Miami, during January 19-22, 1976. The organization of Orbis this year was due mainly to the moderators of the sessions, principally Sydney Meshkov, Murray Gell-Mann, Yoichiro Nambu, Glennys Farrar, Fred Zachariasen and Behram Kursunoglu, who was also chairman of the conference. The coherence of the various sessions is due to their efforts, and special thanks are due to Sydney Meshkov who was responsible for coor dinating many of the efforts of the moderators and for including essentially all of the frontier developments in high energy physics. Because of the number of papers and their integrated length, it has been necessary to divide these proceedings into two volumes. An effort has been made to divide the material in the two volumes into fundamental questions (including the appearance of magnetic charge in particle physics) and recent high energy results and attendant ppenomenology. These volumes were prepared by Mrs. Helga Billings, Mrs. Elva Brady and Ms. Yvonne Leber, and their dedication and skill are gratefully acknowledged. Their efforts v PREFACE during Orbis were supplemented by those of Mrs. Jacquelyn Zagursky, with our appreciation. The photo graphs were taken by Ms. Shirley Busch.
