Book excerpt: As mental health needs increase, more adolescents are being hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals (Moses, 2011). Preyde, Parekh, Warne, and Heintzman (2017) found that students being interviewed about their transition were anxious about returning to school after a psychiatric hospital stay. There are many ways that schools can help students successfully transition back to school after a psychiatric hospital discharge. The purpose of this study was to study the transition students face when they return to school after they have been discharged from a psychiatric hospital. The participants in this study were middle school and high school regular education teachers, special education teachers, school counselors, and administrators in south central Pennsylvania. This study used survey and interview data to analyze this transition. There were 45 survey participants and five interview participants. It found that most of the students that return to school after a psychiatric hospitalization do not need to make up all of the work that they missed while they were hospitalized, and that students are not usually picked on by their peers when they return. The data showed anxiety is the biggest problem behavior that students have when they return to school after a psychiatric hospitalization. Frequent breaks and having an adult to talk to was found to be important. Flexibility was important among staff members. Communication is also important between the psychiatric hospital staff and the school staff, and communication between the support team at the school is needed in order for the transition to be successful.

Research in the 1970s that addressed this question has since proven seminal to the development of two co-existing fields of research that continue to offer mutually informative insights: Developmental Psychopathology (DP) and Educational Effectiveness Research (EER). DP and EER share the common agenda of understanding factors that relate to individuals’ learning and development: DP focuses on the individual learning and developing in context, EER investigates the educational systems, structures, and processes that shape how individuals learn and develop. Given the complementarity of DP and EER, it is somewhat surprising that they have rarely joined forces and synthesised knowledge to develop a fuller understanding of the roles educational contexts play in the mental health and wellbeing of students. This Research Topic aims to stimulate such collaboration.

It offers clinical and administrative guidelines for innovative and effective programs addressing critical problems among rural youth and in areas where funding and resources are scarce. Chapters cover program development, implementation, sustainability, and evaluation; consider issues of community and policy support; address barriers to access and delivery; and debunk misconceptions about the region and its cultures. Chapters also discuss rural SMH applications relating to special populations, including students with autism, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, conduct disorders, and ADHD. In addition, the book examines the potential of school-based programs as a counter to the stigma and distrust of mental health services common to the region. “/div>Topics featured in the Handbook include: The value of rural SMH from an educator’s standpoint. Preventing suicide among students in rural schools. Substance abuse in rural school settings. Bullying and cyberbully among rural youth. Intergenerational patterns of mental illness in rural settings and their relevance for SMH. The importance of involving communities in culturally competent rural interventions. The Handbook of Rural School Mental Health is a must-have resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in child and school psychology, educational psychology, social work/counseling, educational policymakers, pediatrics/school nursing, teaching, and teacher education.div

Book excerpt: This book examines the intermediate level of mental health services with a focus on partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) models of care for youth. It reviews the history of PHPs and IOPs and highlights their current care models, demonstrating the increase in the development and implementation of evidence-based treatment (EBT) practices. The book explores issues relating to program development, implementation, and considerations for sustainability. It provides interventions designed to enhance the well-being of youth who are experiencing a range of mental health concerns as well as strategies to engage and involve their families. In addition, the book offers feasible strategies for measuring outcomes and applying these results to meaningful clinical evaluations in PHP and IOP settings. It describes the process of accessing and using these intermediate services as well as additional treatment resources that may be necessary in the continuum of mental health care for youth. Key areas of coverage include: The history and purpose of mental health care and the role of day treatment programs for youth. Working with program administration and other stakeholders, identifying a patient population, and engaging community and referral sources. The importance of family involvement, coordination of care, and simultaneously addressing the transactional relationship between physical and mental health. Transitioning youth from pediatric mental health services into the adult mental health system. Working with a diverse patient population in intermediate treatment programs. Providing practical information for families and practitioners navigating the pediatric mental health continuum of care. The Handbook of Evidence-Based Day Treatment Programs for Children and Adolescents is a must-have resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians, therapists, course instructors, and other professionals in child and adolescent psychiatry, clinical child and school psychology, social work, counseling, public health, family studies, developmental psychology, pediatrics, and all related disciplines.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is clear that developing a "Unified and Comprehensive System of Learning Supports" is a complex, multi-year process. The Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA has delineated the specifics nature and scope of the system and of the processes for getting from a fragmented and marginalized set of student and learning supports to a unified and comprehensive system (see the Center's "System Change Toolkit"--http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/summit2002/resourceaids.htm). In doing so, the Center has stressed that such a system needs to be "adapted" to localities. While reasonable adaptation is wise, care must be taken not to eliminate elements that are essential to a fundamental transformation of how schools address barriers to learning and teaching and re-engage disconnected students. A frequent problem that arises in implementing the type of approach the Center has delineated is the tendency for some places to adopt the terminology and not the substance of system transformation. To counter this tendency, the Center has provided five essential elements that should be the focus of any place that indicates it is developing a unified and comprehensive system of learning supports.
