Book excerpt: The following book is the author's examination of Jonathan Edwards' work, often referred to as 'The Freedom of Will'. It was first published in 1754 and examines the nature and the status of humanity's will. The book takes the classic Calvinist viewpoint on total depravity of the will and the need of humanity for God's grace in salvation. Here, the author, Albert Taylor Bledsoe, an Episcopal priest, disputes Edwards' thesis, which in his own words is said to be "founded in error and delusion".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of President Edwards's Inquiry on the Freedom of the Will Differences of opinion respecting Edwards's work on the Will - Its relation to scriptural theology - It is liable to be perverted and misapprehended - Peculiarities in the language of Edwards - Arminianism. Among the causes of the lamentable dissensions with which, at the present day, the American churches are agitated, a place has been assigned to President Edwards's Treatise on the Freedom of the Will. It is alledged, that differences of opinion respecting the principles and influence of this great work, have occasioned jealousy and alienation of feeling, among those who ought to be closely united, in the bonds of Christian affection and fellowship. If the fact be really so, it is high time to inquire, whether the fault is in the work itself, or in those who read it, or in those who, without having read it, undertake to pronounce authoritatively upon its merits. That it has had, for nearly a century past, a commanding influence, over our religious, as well as our philosophical opinions, will not be questioned by those who have marked attentively the distinguishing features of the age. If this influence is, on the whole, unfavorable to the cause of truth and piety, it becomes us to inquire, in what way its injurious tendency may be counteracted. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip J. Fisk offers a critical reappraisal of Jonathan Edwards's Freedom of Will, interpreting Edwards from within his own tradition, Reformed Orthodoxy (±1550-1750), avoiding the outdated paradigms of the conventional interpretation of Edwards and his tradition, a so-called deterministic, reconciliationist Calvinism, and demonstrating from primary sources, such as Harvard and Yale commencement theses and quaestiones, that Edwards departed ways with Reformed Orthodoxy's robust and highly nuanced view of freedom of will, contingency, and necessity.

Book excerpt: “Being sensible that I am unable to do any thing without God’s help, I do humbly entreat him, by his grace, to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will, for Christ’s sake. Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week. 1. Resolved, That I will do whatsoever I think to be most to the glory of God, and my own good, profit, and pleasure, in the whole of my duration; without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriads of ages hence. Resolved, to do whatever I think to be my duty, and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general. Resolved, so to do, whatever difficulties I meet with, how many soever, and how great soever. 2. Resolved, To be continually endeavouring to find out some new contrivance and invention to promote the forementioned things. 3. Resolved, If ever I shall fall and grow dull, so as to neglect to keep any part of these Resolutions, to repent of all I can remember, when I come to myself again. 4. Resolved, Never to do any manner of thing, whether in soul or body, less or more, but what tends to the glory of God, nor be, nor suffer it, if I can possibly avoid it. 5. Resolved, Never to lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can. 6. Resolved, To live with all my might, while I do live....
