Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess the relative influence of career, financial, personal, and legal factors on African American male engagement in postsecondary career and technical education and to determine whether the influence of these factors was moderated by the participants having graduated or not graduated high school and by thei having or not having been previously incarcerated. Based on a review of the literature, a twelve-item questionnaire was developed and subsequently examined by a panel of judges for the relevance and readability of its contents. After being mounted online, the questionnaire netted the responses of some 212 African American male students, all of whom were currently enrolled in a vocational program and most of whom had graduated from high school (62.3%) and had no previous history of incarceration (55.2%). To determine whether the hypothesized structure of the questionnaire could be empirically confirmed, a principal components analysis was conducted on participants; responses and yielded results similar but not wholly identical to the one premised on the literature review: specifically, a three- rather than four-factor structure that combined legal with personal items. A repeated measures comparison of the factor scores obtained from the empirically-derived structure pointed to significant differences in the importance that participants ascribed to the three factors: personal least, career most, and financial in-between. By high school graduation status, a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) pointed to no statistically significant differences in the subgroup ratings ascribed to the three factors. Apropos a second set of MANOVA outcomes, however, a statistically significant difference in the importance ascribed to the personal factor was observed by the respondent's incarceration history.

It introduced literature focused on persistence and attrition of African American male students who matriculated at higher educational institutions to explore the factors impacting their educational experiences. The study explored challenges and barriers African American males encounter, which affect their educational outcomes at a college campus. It also used theoretical frameworks as a foundation to gain insight into how academic and social engagement, racial micro-aggressions, and student involvement impact educational outcomes of African American males in higher education. Additionally, the study examined personalized support services and programs that can directly impact African American males' engagement on a college campus such as mentoring, advising, and campus clubs and organizations. Sources of Data The sample for the study was taken from the population of approximately 24,000 undergraduate students enrolled at Dynamic University (DU) during the 2012/2013 academic school year and from alumni of DU. Participants in this study were African American males involved or currently participate in retention programs, clubs, organization, and fraternities at the university. The survey was provided to students enrolled at the time of the study or who graduated from a public four-year university, Dynamic University. African American male students involved (at the time of the study or previously) in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the Cooper-Woodson Enhancement Program (CWC), clubs and organizations, fraternities, or who utilized other support services and programs on campus were surveyed. The sample size was 84 EOP students, 55 CWC students, and 50 alumni who graduated from Dynamic University. The survey yielded 38 respondents, of which over 47% had indicated receiving their bachelor's degree from Dynamic University. Conclusions Reached Various components of support programs and services have a huge impact on African American males' educational experiences in higher education. For many students, being engaged or involved inside and outside the classroom environment has influenced educational attainment at the university. The data from African American male participants involved in supportive programs, services, fraternities, clubs, or organizations showed engagement having a major impact on student's motivation to persist to degree completion. In addition, family, career goals, and mentoring seem to also be important factors that have encouraged African American males surveyed to persist. Although the respondents were unaware of resources, services, and programs available upon first matriculating to the institution, the majority of African American male respondents became involved because of personal development and networking opportunities, components in certain programs and services on campus. The significant amount of respondents indicated encountering challenges with financial aid assistance and personal obstacles affecting their academic performance at the institution. African American males surveyed seemed to be overall satisfied with services, programs, and resources provided by the institution. Furthermore, African American male respondents' levels of satisfaction and interactions with faculty members seemed to play a critical role in students' academic performance and educational experience at the university.

Findings from this study provide insights into predictors that may lead to academic achievement for African American male students. Phenomenological hermeneutic analysis was used to explore lived experiences of African American community college students. Six African American male students attending a community college in Virginia were interviewed. A semi-structured interview protocol approach was used to establish dialogue between the participants and the researcher. The interview questions were designed based on the literature review. The results illustrate how African American male students are able to overcome obstacles to ascertain academic success regardless of their race and postsecondary challenges.

The primary means of data collection was two semi-structured interviews to learn about the participants' personal, precollege, college and post college experiences, as well as their recommendations for improving postsecondary access and success for African American males. Themes that emerged from the data enabled the reaching of findings on significant factors that influenced these participants' college enrollment, persistence and degree completion. Study findings and recommendations for increasing the college enrollment and academic success of African American men include the need for : 1) colleges and universities to implement policies and practices that produce a welcoming environment for African American men, especially on PWI campuses, 2) parents and teachers' to nurture the postsecondary expectations of students as early as the elementary school, 3) vocational schools to be considered as a viable option for African American males who may not be on or interested in pursuing a college education, 4) institutional hiring practices that promote an increased presence of African American staff, faculty, and administrators, and 5) mentoring programs that specifically target African American males beginning at the primary school level and continuing throughout college. This study also provides implications for research, policy, and practices intended to increase the postsecondary enrollment, retention and degree completion of African American men.

The students (N = 108) were placed into two distinct groups: higher-performing and lower-performing African American males based upon the following: (a) Numerical average in core classes taken, (b) performance on the Texas state achievement test, (c) placement in academic classes and programs, and (d) attendance and discipline records. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in which African American males responded to The Needs Satisfaction Scale (Ilardi, Leone, Kasser, & Ryan, 1993; Deci & Ryan, 2000; Gagne, 2003) and The Student Opinion Survey/Education Survey (Murdock, 1993). Tests of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used in this study to measure the mean differences between the two groups in terms of self-determination (autonomy, relatedness, and competence); and achievement motivation (personal motivation, parent encouragement, teacher support, and peer support). The study found statistically significant differences in levels of self-determination and achievement motivation between the two groups. The qualitative segment was used to explore factors that lead to successful school performance for the African American males included in this study. Four themes emerged: (a) parental encouragement and expectations, (b) involvement in extracurricular activities, (c) personal motivation to achieve, and (d) relationships with significant adults. Recommendations are made to replicate this study in school with larger African American student enrollment and in schools with high achievement and high economic levels. Also, the study may be replicated with other ethnic groups who historically have experienced poor school performance.

Book excerpt: This research study examined the social and academic factors that predict involvement in post-secondary education (PSE) and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degree attainment among African American students. The conceptual framework that informed this research study was Nora's (2003) Student/Institution Engagement Model. The hypothesized conceptual model included the role of background characteristics (gender, first generation students, and socioeconomic status), school type (urban, public versus private), family factors (family composition, father's and mother's educational attainment), academic factors (AP courses, academic self concept) and social support (teacher relationships, parent involvement, peer relationships). The study utilized the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS: 88-2000), which is a nationally representative data set. Three models were tested using logistic regression. The first model examined the dichotomous variable of attended post-secondary education after high school versus did not attend post-secondary education after high school (n = 884). The second model examined the dichotomous variable of majored in a STEM field versus did not major in a STEM field (n = 771). The last model examined the dichotomous variable degree attainment in a STEM field versus a non-STEM field (n=393). The findings identified academic rigor, specifically advance placement (AP) classes, pursuing an academic high school diploma, gender (female), being from a single parent home, family SES, and self expectancy as predictors of attending PSE, while gender (male) and first generation status (not being first generation) predicted STEM degree attainment. The study also found that the overall models for predicting PSE and predicting STEM degree attainment were significant, while the model predicting majoring in a STEM field was not significant. The findings are discussed in terms of measurement of the variables, handling of missing data, and the need for greater assessment of variables specific to math and science achievement during high school. Implications for future research emphasize the importance of designing programs and initiatives to help African American students succeed in high school and college in STEM fields.

Those areas include historical analyses of African-centered education; parental perspectives; strategies for working with Black children; African-centered culture, science and STEM; culturally responsive curriculum and instruction; and culturally responsive resources for teachers and school leaders.
