Book excerpt: An Evaluative Evaluation of FRANK’S SIGN (Presence of a Diagonal Ear Lobe Crease related to Cardiac Pathology) on Histological Basis. Frank’s sign, as described in 1973, is a diagonal crease of the ear lobe. The characteristic is supposedly related to cardiac pathology and has strongly been associated with coronary artery atherosclerosis. Samples from both the ear lobes were obtained from several adult patients’ autopsy for histopathology, as well as cardiac samples from all four cardiac compartments. When compared patients with Frank’s sign and those without it had no statistical difference in age. There was however a statistically significant increased: ü Cardiac weight, ü Left ventricular wall thickness,& ü Right ventricular wall thickness. Histopathology obtained from the ear lobes revealed a significant changes in an arterial vessel, located at the base of the crease, diffuse fibrosis, with eosinophilic inclusions in the peripheral nerves. These changes suggest a time-related progression of the crease-associated changes. Thus, obtained data suggested a significant correlation between the morphological changes of the myocardium and the presence of the ear lobe creases, with significant arterial chanes along with degeneration in peripheral nerves and deep tissue changes found in the base of the crease. Thus, an effort has been made in this Booklet to evaluate the gross morphology and histopathology of Frank’s sign and its relevance to cardiac changes from the several autopsies. …Dr. H. K. In turn, many excellent textbooks have been written to aid this process. These books are necessary and useful in helping the student learn the underlying pulse sequences used in CMR, as well as the imaging findings in a variety of disorders. However, one of the difficulties inherent in learning CMR from a book is that the printed format is not the ideal medium to d- play the dynamic imaging that comprises a typical CMR case. For instance, it may be difficult to perceive focal areas of wall motion abnormality on serial static pictures, but these abnormalities are often easily seen on cine loops. One might say that trying to learn CMR solely from a standard textbook with illustrations is like trying to learn to drive by looking at snapshots obtained through the windshield of a moving car. The learner needs to see the cardiac motion and decide if it is normal or abnormal; he or she needs to be in the driver’s seat. An additional limitation of the ava- able textbooks on CMR is that while they often have superb illustrations of abnormal findings, these images have been preselected.
