Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several models of the upper mixed layer of the ocean (Mellor-Yamada Level 2 and 2 1/2, Niiler, Garwood, Price, and Therry-Lacarrere) were compared using (a) idealized forcing that consisted of cases of wind deepening, heating, and cooling, (b) data from Ocean Stations November and Papa, (c) data taken during the Mixed-Layer Experiment (MILE), and (d) data taken from R/P FLIP in the spring of 1980 about 400 km off California. Comparisons with both idealized and observed forcing show the differences among the models to be significant. Differences are especially noticeable for the deepening of the mixed layer in the fall and winter due to wind mixing and convection, and for the shallowing of the mixed layer during light winds and strong heating. Although evaluation of the models is complicated by uncertainties (primarily with regard to advective effects and forcing), the results suggest certain deficiencies in some of the mixing parameterizations. Keywords: Mixed layer (Marine); Ocean models; Pacific Ocean; Air water interactions.

Book excerpt: This thesis evaluates a coupled oceanic-atmospheric boundary (ABL/OBL) model which provides single-station prediction capability relative to wind stress and oceanic mixed layer depth observations. The model is initialized and verified using data obtained during the 1983 Mixed Layer Dynamics Experiment (MILDEX). Model computation of friction velocity and oceanic mixed layer depth are compared with observations from both atmospheric frontal and non-frontal synoptic situations. Favorable results of model predictions are achieved although in some cases they are slightly higher than observed turbulence derived values of . Mixed layer predictions are very close to the observed except in frontal regions. Proper ABL/OBL model initialization of boundary layer values is critical in order to achieve favorable results. keywords: Marine atmospheric boundary layer; Oceanic boundary layer; Coupled boundary layer model; Interface; Well-mixed layers; Surface turbulent fluxes; Friction velocity.

Book excerpt: A high temporal resolution data set from a mooring in Monterey Bay, California was analyzed and used to calculate heat and momentum fluxes for the purpose of forcing two ocean mixed layer models. The time frame for the study was September, 1992, a period representative of the sea breeze circulation frequently affecting this and other coastal regions. The models used were that of Price, Weller and Pinkel (1986), a Richardson number based mixing model, and Garwood (1977), a model based on the turbulent kinetic energy budget within the mixed layer. Both models were analyzed with respect to their ability to reproduce the observed diurnal variation of the temperature and depth of the mixed layer. Although the model predictions agree reasonably well with observations in regards to the phase of the diurnal temperature cycle, they were seen to underpredict its magnitude, particularly the nocturnal cooling. This lack of cooling in the models relative to the ocean could be due to penetrative convection, non-steady state turbulence, and/or diurnal advection present in the ocean but not in one or both models. Additionally, the models exhibited an upward temperature trend relative to the data which caused progressively increasing stratification. This trend was used to approximate the magnitude of vertical advective effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceanic turbulent boundary layer is a critical region to understand for oceanic and atmospheric prediction. This thesis answers two fundamental questions: (1) what is the response of the ocean mixed layer system to transient forcing at the air sea surface? (2) what is the necessary time and space resolution in an ocean mixed layer model to resolve important transient responses? Beginning with replication of de Szoeke and Rhines' work, additional physical processes were added to include more realistic viscous dissipation and anisotropy in the three-dimensional turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget. These refinements resulted in modification of de Szoeke and Rhines' findings. Firstly, TKE unsteadiness is important for a minimum of 10 to the 5th power seconds. Secondly, viscous dissipation should not be approximated as simply proportional to shear production. Thirdly, entrainment shear production remains significant for a minimum of one pendulum-day. The required temporal model resolution is dependent on the phenomena to be studied. This study focused on the diurnal, synoptic, and annual cycles, which the one-hour time step of the Naval Postgraduate School model adequately resolves. The study of spatial resolution showed unexpectedly that model skill was comparable for 1 m, 10 m and even 20 m vertical grid spacing.

Book excerpt: The book presents results of recent projects in oceanography and marine geosciences (e.g. WOCE, JGOFS, PAGES, ODP) regarding present and past circulation in the South Atlantic. The objective of the book is to integrate results from both oceanographic and geological studies. As the connecting link between the Antarctic and the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic plays a crucial role with regard to the heat budget of the North Atlantic and to the biogeochemical budget of the global ocean. New results from studies of meridional water mass and heat transports are presented. The central theme of geological investigations is the reconstruction of current and productivity systems in the South Atlantic during the late Quaternary.

For those new to the field, concise reviews of the equations of oceanic motion, sub-grid-scale parameterization, and numerical approximation techniques are presented and four specific numerical models, chosen to span the range of current practice, are described in detail. For more advanced users, a suite of model test problems is developed to illustrate the differences among models, and to serve as a first stage in the quantitative evaluation of future algorithms. The extensive list of references makes this book a valuable text for both graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the marine sciences and in related fields such as meteorology, and climate and coupled biogeochemical modeling.

There is an extraordinarily broad class of coupled atmosphere-ocean models ranging from sets of equations that can be solved analytically to highly detailed representations of Nature requiring the most advanced computers for execution. The models are applied to subjects including the conceptual understanding of Earth's climate, predictions that support human activities in a variable climate, and projections aimed to prepare society for climate change. The present book fills a void in the current literature by presenting a basic and yet rigorous treatment of how the models of the atmosphere and the ocean are put together into a coupled system. The text of the book is divided into chapters organized according to complexity of the components that are coupled. Two full chapters are dedicated to current efforts on the development of generalist couplers and coupling methodologies all over the world.

Book excerpt: This work is an examination of the state-of-the-art of the two layer, integrated type atmospheric mixed-layer models with emphasis on applications to the marine regime. A linear synoptic scale mixed-layer microphysical scale model structure is suggested for short term (24 hour) forecasts of atmospheric variables with naval applications. Several potential deficiencies in the present knowledge are identified for physical parameterizations (particularly the entrainment rate) and the synoptic scale forcing requirements. It is concluded that these models, though promising, have not been verified for a wide range of atmospheric conditions.
