Book excerpt: A standard grading system is used to evaluate the properties and expected performance of an asphalt binder. The most common grading system used in the US today is the performance grading (PG) system. This system prescribes an operational temperature range within which the binder is expected to perform satisfactorily without resulting in rutting, fatigue cracking or thermal cracking as a distress. On the low-temperature and thermal cracking end, this system uses both a metric related to stiffness and rate of relaxation (m-value) to establish a low temperature grade for a given asphalt binder. Although these parameters provide some information on the rate of relaxation and overall rigidity of the asphalt binder they don’t include an evaluation of the tensile strength of the asphalt binder. The tensile strength of the binder can furnish critical information about its resistance to cracking including thermal cracking. The asphalt industry has become particularly interested in the impact of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and additives such as rejuvenators on the behavior and performance of the material. The goal of this study was to evaluate the tensile strength characteristics of asphalt binders and composites in addition to their stiffness characteristics. The study was conducted in three parts: (1) the evaluation of tensile strength of asphalt binders with similar performance grades, (2) the evaluation of tensile strength of asphalt binders as a function of the amount of recycled asphalt binder added to the virgin binder, and (3) the influence of recycled asphalt and rejuvenators on the stiffness and tensile strength of asphalt mortars. In addition to these three objectives, this study also developed simplified methods to prepare and evaluate the tensile strength of asphalt binders and mortars as a material characterization tool to screen or evaluate the efficacy of RAP, rejuvenators, and other additives. Results show that similarly graded binders have a significant variability both in terms of their stiffness and strength and that rejuvenators can be used with RAP to achieve a balance of stiffness and strength.

Book excerpt: Asphalt mixtures or asphalt concrete are used to pave about 93% of about 2.6 million miles paved roads and highways in the US. Asphalt concrete is a composite of aggregates and asphalt binder; asphalt binder works as a glue to bind the aggregate particles. The mechanical response of the asphalt binder is dependent on the time/rate of loading, temperature and age. An asphalt concrete mixture inherits most of these characteristics from the asphalt binder. Also the asphalt binder plays a critical role in providing the asphalt concrete the ability to resist tensile stresses and relaxing thermally induced stresses that can lead to fatigue and low temperature cracking, respectively. Hence, it is very important (but not sufficient) to ensure that asphalt binders used in the production of asphalt concrete are inherently resistant to cracking, rutting and other distresses that a pavement may undergo. Current binder specification (AASHTO M-320) to evaluate its fatigue cracking is based on the stiffness of the binder and not on its tensile strength. Also, measurements following current specifications are made on test specimens subjected to a uniaxial mode of loading that does not produce the same stress state in the binder as in the case of asphalt concrete. Another challenge in being able to produce binders with inherently superior performing characteristics is the fact that the asphalt binders produced in a refinery do not have a consistent chemical composition. The chemical composition of asphalt binder depends on the source and refining process of crude oil. There is a need to better quantify the tensile strength of asphalt binder and understand the relationship between the chemical composition of asphalt binders and its mechanical properties. The knowledge from this study can be used to engineer asphalt binders that have superior performance characteristics. The objective of this research was to quantify the tensile strength of asphalt binder, develop a metric for the tensile strength and identify the relationship between chemical composition and mechanical properties of asphalt binder. Laboratory tests were performed on binders of different grades using a poker chip geometry to simulate confined state by varying the film thickness, rate of loading and modes of loading. The chemical properties of asphalt binder were studied based on SARA fractionation. The findings from this research showed that the modified correspondence principles can unify and explain the rate and mode dependency of asphalt binder. This study also quantified the relationship between chemical composition, and rheological and mechanical properties of asphalt binder. Finally, a composite model was developed based on the individual properties of chemical fractions which could predict the dynamic modulus of the asphaltenes doped and resins doped binder.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive laboratory testing program was conducted in this research project to examine the blending between reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)/recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) and virgin asphalt binders and to evaluate the factors that may affect fatigue and low-temperature cracking as well as moisture-induced damage in asphalt mixtures prepared using these materials. This project included two parts: a binder study and a mixture study. In the binder study, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was utilized to characterize the micromechanical properties of the interfacial zone that develops between the RAP/RAS binders and the virgin asphalt binders. Three virgin asphalt binders with different performance grades (PG 58-28, PG 64-28, and PG 64-22), three RAP sources, as well as manufacturing waste and tear-off RAS were used in this project. A new sample-preparation procedure was developed to simulate the blending between the RAS/RAP and the virgin asphalt binders that occurs during asphalt mixture production. The micro-structure, stiffness and the adhesive properties along the blending zone were evaluated for different combinations of RAP/RAS binders and virgin binders. In the mixture study, several asphalt mixtures were used to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of RAP and/or RAS on the mix performance, including a control mixture (no RAP or RAS), a mixture containing 30% RAP, a mixture containing 5% tear-off RAS, and a mixture containing 20% RAP and 3% tear-off RAS. All mixtures were designed to meet ODOT specifications for Item 442 (Superpave) Type A for heavy traffic intermediate course asphalt mixes. The resistance of the asphalt mixtures to fatigue cracking was evaluated using the semi-circular bend (SCB) and the indirect tensile strength (IDT) tests. The SCB test was performed using the Illinois Method and the Louisiana Method. In addition the potential for low-temperature cracking was evaluated using the asphalt concrete cracking device (ACCD), and the susceptibility of the asphalt mixtures to moisture-induced damage was evaluated using the AASHTO T 283 (modified Lottman) test. The AFM test results indicated that blending occurred to a varying degree between the RAP binders and the virgin binders for all RAP-virgin binder combinations. The average modulus of the blending zone depended on the properties of the RAP and the virgin binders. For all binders, a reduction in the adhesive bonding energy was also observed in the blending zone due to the presence of RAP. However, the adhesive properties of the blending zone were significantly higher than those in the RAP binders. Statistical analysis also indicated that the stiffness of the interface blending zone is affected by the properties of the RAP and virgin asphalt binders, while the adhesive properties of the interface blending zone is primarily affected by those of virgin binder used. A linear regression model was developed to predict the modulus and adhesive bonding energy of the blending zone in terms of RAP and virgin binder properties. The validation of the regression models suggested that these models can serve as a viable tool in selecting the virgin binder to be used in a RAP mixture based on the properties of the RAP binder. Finally, the AFM imaging and force spectroscopy experiments revealed very limited to no blending between manufacturing waste or tear-off RAS materials and the virgin binders considered. The asphalt mixture test results also showed that the use of tear-off RAS in intermediate asphalt mixes significantly reduced their resistance to low-temperature and fatigue cracking as well as moisture damage, which can be attributed to the limited blending observed in the AFM experiments between the RAS and the virgin asphalt binders.

Overall, the goal of determining such proportions is to establish an HMA mixture that will meet specific performance criteria. In addition, it is imperative to ensure that the asphalt binder will fully coat the aggregates and that the resulting mixture is workable and compactable. In order to ensure sufficient aggregate drying and coating, both the asphalt binder and the aggregates are heated to elevated temperatures ranging between 300oF and 325oF. The use of such high temperatures would result in lowering the viscosity of the asphalt binder which is the main factor affecting the coating and workability of asphalt mixtures. In recent years, a new group of technologies have been introduced to the United States that allow producing asphalt mixtures at temperatures 30 to 100oF lower than what is used in HMA. This group of technologies is commonly referred to as Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). They are promoted as environmentally friendly green alternatives to HMA mixtures as they produce lower greenhouse gas emissions. This new group of technologies aims at reducing the viscosity of the asphalt binder through the addition of organic or chemical additives or by introducing cool water into the heated molten asphalt under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, resulting in so-called foamed asphalt binder. As a consequence, lower temperatures are needed during production for the asphalt binder to be absorbed by the aggregates.

It was found that after secondary long-term aging, recycled binders are more resistant to rutting, while they are less resistant to fatigue and low temperature cracking. The modified aging kinetic model can be used to accurately characterize the effect of secondary aging time on rutting or fatigue factors for recycled binders. The resistance of aged binders to fatigue and low temperature cracking is obviously improved by adding the warm mix asphalt additive. By comparison, using styrene butadiene rubber latex enhances the binder performance in almost all aspects. The aging level has a more significant effect than the recycling plan for all performance parameters.

This study conducted a preliminary investigation to inspect the individual and joint effects of binder (aged or rejuvenated) and gradation (decayed or normal) on respective performance indicators. Three mixes were designed and the properties were determined, including mix A collected from aged asphalt pavement, mix B designed with the same gradation of mix A but using virgin materials, and mix C designed with the initial construction aggregate gradation of the aged pavement section using virgin materials. The experimental program was carried out at the binder/aggregate, mortar and mix levels. The binder property, aggregate quality, and gradation of mix A were changed compared to the initial design, and the proper dosage of rejuvenator is able to restore the binder properties largely except for ductility. Asphalt mortars of mixes A and B were prepared and submitted for repeated shear at constant height (RSCH) and frequency sweep at constant height (FSCH) tests and found that the former has a better rutting resistance in terms of the Gv (viscous component of creep stiffness) and complex shear modulus G*, whereas poorer low-temperature and fatigue performances in terms of the glassy modulus G*g and NP20. At the mix level, master curves of the three mixes were developed by dynamic modulus tests and revealed disparate viscoelastic properties, of which mix C is mostly desired. Binder aging and gradation decay work contradictorily, determining flow number test results so that mixes A and C have close and higher flow number values than mix B. Fatigue and low-temperature fracture properties were evaluated by semi-circular bending tests and indicated the poorest performance for mix A because of binder aging and gradation decay.

In Texas, the current practice of incorporating RAP is controlled by a simplified table that lists a substitute binder grade and recycled binder ratio (RBR) when RAP is incorporated in a mix. There are a few shortcomings with this simple approach of specifying a maximum ratio: (1) it does not address the potential difference in the quality of recycled binders from RAP, (2) it may result in the use of substituted binders with little or no polymer (elastomer) and (3) it does not account for the influence of recycling agents. The goal of this study was to evaluate the change in performance of binders and mixtures using different grades of virgin binder and percentages of RAP. Two different Job Mix Formulae (JMF) and corresponding materials were obtained from asphalt plants in the state of Texas. A test matrix was developed to evaluate binders and mixtures with different ratios of recycled binder to virgin binder and different ratios of RAP to virgin material, respectively. The results from this study show that addition of RAP or recycled binder (from RAP) results in an increase in stiffness and resistance to rutting, which was expected. However, the resistance to cracking showed mixed results. The test results also show that the properties of the recycled binder from RAP can vary significantly with source and have a drastic effect on the properties of the binder and mixture.
