Book excerpt: This handbook presents findings of a study that examined the outcomes of the Chief Executive Officer Leadership Development Program, which was developed by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). The 1-year program was comprised of classroom sessions, coaching, journal writing, and learning projects. Data were derived from: (1) a pre-program survey and questionnaire of 38 participating superintendents; and (2) post-program interviews with the 38 participants and their facilitators, a post-questionnaire completed by participants, and analysis of student journals. Findings indicate that the superintendents improved their leadership competencies and self-awareness. Of the four superintendent subgroups that were identified, two--the New Perspectives subgroup and the Role Expansion subgroup--were more affected than administrators who were already highly effective or more control-oriented. The program, compared to other studies of this nature, resulted in two more prominent outcomes: the view of leadership as a shared responsibility and a broader view of their professional role. Implications of the findings for evaluation of leadership-development programs are: the use of multiple methods enriches analysis; evaluation studies should expect highly individualized outcomes; and evaluation studies provide opportunities for understanding the leadership-development process. Eleven tables and five figures are included. Appendices contain copies of the exit interviews and statistics on subgroup differences. Contains 53 references. (LMI)

This has made programs that seek to promote it difficult to design and implement, and challenging to evaluate effectively. The model presented in this report specifies how programs can affect a key aspect of leadership development--the psychological development of the individual.

Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to begin the process of making a contribution to the identification and development of better-prepared and stronger educational leaders. It focuses on the following: leadership skills and their linkages to the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards and the National Policy Board for Educational Administration's domains and dimensions; hands-on learning that bridges theory and practice; a combination of best practices from teaching, instruction, and staff development; and directions for developing personal action plans for continuing professional development. It is designed as a cooperative-learning tool. The lessons and activities require a partner who provides specific performance feedback and who serves as a development partner and coach. It is organized into eight sections: (1) "Background and Fundamentals"; (2) "Analyzing a Case Study"; (3) "Developing School Improvement Plans"; (4) "Office Deskwork"; (5) "Making Oral Presentations"; (6) "Providing Leadership in Groups"; (7) "Conducting Structured Interviews"; and (8) "Planning for Personal Development." An extensive resources section contains examples of lists for analyzing case studies, samples of various forms and documentation, ISLLC standards, and a summary analysis of performance aspects related to the program skill areas. A subject index is also included. (WFA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Executive development programs have entered a period of rapid transformation, driven by digital disruption and a widening gap between the skills that participants and their organizations demand and those provided by their executive programs. This work delves into the objective functions of the executive development space, analyzes the demand characteristics of the learners and the organizations that pay for the programs, and the ways in which business schools and other providers deliver (or not) on the promises they make regarding skill development and the continued value of learning to the organization. They show how a trio of disruptive forces (disintermediation, disaggregation and decoupling),whichhave figured prominently in industries disrupted by digitalization, are reshaping the structure of demand for executive development. The authors look at the future of executive development in the era of self-refining algorithms (aka machine learning) and wearable sensors and computers, and offer a compass for making the right choice for CEO's and CLO's to guide executive program design. Ultimately, they offer a guide for to optimize the learning production function for both skill acquisition and skill transfer - the two charges that the new skills economy has laid out for any educational enterprise.

Book excerpt: Executive development programs have entered a period of rapid transformation, driven on one side by the proliferation of a new technological, cultural, and economic landscape commonly referred to as 'digital disruption' and on the other by a widening gap between the skills and capabilities participants and their organizations demand and those provided by their executive program providers. We document--on the basis of transcripts of some 100 interviews with Fortune 500 executives--a current and growing awareness of a mismatch between executive development offerings and the skill sets executives need in a VUCA, Web 2.5-enabled economy. We show that a trio of forces of digital disruption--specifically the disintermediation of the services of instructors and facilitators, the disaggregation of the previously bundled experiences that constitute an executive program, and the decoupling of the sources of value participants derive from any one experience--together open up the executive education industry to a radical restructuration. We argue that any consequential strategic action on the part of providers must address two major current gaps: the gap between the skills required by participants and those provided by suppliers ("the skills gap"), and the gap that separates skill acquisition from skill application ("the skills transfer gap"). We canvass the literature on skill measurement, acquisition and transfer to establish the enduring power of these distinctions in explaining the success of various training and education programs. We use these distinctions to structure the landscape of strategic decisions that both organizations committed to organizational development and providers of executive development programs must in very short order make
