Book Synopsis Improvement of Erodible Soils Through Use of Oil Industry Wastes by : Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Food Innovation Fund
Download or read book Improvement of Erodible Soils Through Use of Oil Industry Wastes written by Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Food Innovation Fund and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a summary of a three-year study on the feasibility of using a refinery-generated heavy oil waste sludge for the protection & improvement of a sandy soil cultivated for cereal crop production in south-west Saskatchewan. At the study plots in 1997, sludge was applied at three different rates along with fertilizer applied at two rates. All treatments were replicated four times on 96 plots. The next spring, two fertilizer applications were performed and 48 plots were chemically fallowed while the rest were seeded to durum wheat & oats. In 1999, the previously fallowed plots were also seeded to durum & oats. Soil samples for physical, chemical, & microbial analyses were collected from all plots within one & 21 days of oily waste incorporation, and then in each spring & fall until spring 2000. Results are presented & discussed with regard to characteristics of the oily waste & its degradation, soil aggregation, soil microbial populations & activities, soil nutrients, vegetative plant growth (both crops & weeds), yield & quality of grain, and groundwater quality. Finally, recommendations are made to improve the use of this technique as a means of disposing of heavy oil wastes in an environmentally sound & agriculturally beneficial manner. The appendix contains a report characterizing the soils at the research site.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Agriculture Reviews 51 by : Praveen Guleria
Download or read book Sustainable Agriculture Reviews 51 written by Praveen Guleria and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of climate change, pollution and food safety, the current challenge is to enhance legumes production to sustain the growing population needs by 2050. This is a daunting task because abiotic and biotic stresses are threatening the growth, survival and productivity of legumes. For instance, the productivity of legumes is documented to be reduced by 14-88% by abiotic stresses. The co-occurrence of abiotic and biotic stresses under field conditions leads to interactive stress types, thus yielding positive or negative outcomes. Legumes react using antioxidant defense, osmoregulatory adjustments, hormonal regulations and molecular mechanisms to tolerate stress. Hence, improving legume productivity requires knowledge on the sensitivity, mechanisms and approaches of stress tolerance in legumes, in order to design new crops and alternative management systems. This book presents advances on bioactive compounds, applications, effect of various stresses and biotechnology-based stress tolerance mechanisms of legumes. This is our second volume on Legume Agriculture and Biotechnology, published in the series Sustainable Agriculture Reviews.
