Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Previous research has been conducted on different performance metrics in collegiate athletes in various sports, including volleyball. These metrics include strength, speed, power output, and jump height. However, little research has examined changes in seasonal jumping performance in volleyball athletes on a weekly basis. Purpose: To examine how Division I Volleyball jumping performance is affected by a competitive season. Methods: 11 female volleyball athletes from one NCAA Division I institution wore VERT sensors during practices for the entire 15-week competitive season. The athletes also completed countermovement Jump Mat testing on the first practice of the week, with the exception of 2 weeks, throughout the competitive season. Team averages were calculated according to the period of the season for variables from the VERT sensors and the Jump Mat. Results: A significant difference between the total number of jumps was found between preseason and the 1st half of conference play (p=0.003). No other significant differences were found in total jumps over 50.8 cm, average jump height, average highest overall jump, or countermovement jump height when comparing the periods of the season. Conclusion: The results indicate that jumping performance does not significantly increase or decrease over the course of an NCAA Division I volleyball season. This suggests that these volleyball athletes were able to sustain jumping performance throughout the competitive season.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in muscle power performance in a horizontal (forward movement), vertical, and lateral directions in collegiate basketball players due to the presence of an in-season resistance training program (ISRTP). Four basketball teams were recruited for this study. Two women's basketball teams and two men's basketball teams participated with one team in each gender participating in an ISRTP and one team not participating in an ISRTP. Fifty-three collegiate basketball players (Females= 29, Males= 24) were successfully recruited for this project. Subjects were assessed for lower extremity muscle power and muscle strength at pre-season, mid-season and post-season in order to evaluate any changes that occur over the course of a collegiate varsity basketball season. Margaria-Kalaman, single leg horizontal leap, single leg vertical leap, single leg lateral leap, 5-10-5 shuttle run, estimated RM leg press performance data were collected. Book excerpt: The countermovement jump (CMJ) is a practical, reliable and valid test used to measure lower-body power. The CMJ is frequently utilized by strength and conditioning professionals working with athletes, given its relationship to a multitude of performance variables associated with success in sports. PURPOSE: To examine characteristics of CMJ performance between differing levels of competition. A secondary aim was to report descriptive data on jump performance for NAIA and NCAA Division I male and female athletes. METHODS: Archival data for 275 student athletes from two NCAA division 1 universities (NCAA DI; males = 84, females = 74) and one NAIA university (NAIA; males = 66, females = 51) were utilized for this analysis. The CMJ was performed utilizing a dual single axis (Pasco PS 2141 plates, sampling rate 1000hz unfiltered) force platform system. A 2 x 2 multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to determine whether significant differences in the three dependent variables of VJ height (cm) calculated by flight time, concentric RPD-100ms, and peak power existed between athletes at different playing levels. A discriminant function analysis (DFA) was the used to investigate how the three dependent variables or outcome variables may discriminate the participants based on a combined variable (sex and competition level). These metrics can serve both as an indicator of current performance or as an evaluation diagnostic after an injury. The purpose of this dissertation is to explain the variation seen in power output from a commonly used lower body test such as the countermovement jump (CMJ) and if fat free mass (FFM) from body composition testing can explain for differences observed in power output in the CMJ amongst Division 1 collegiate athletes. Additionally, this dissertation will explore how power and FFM change from a healthy pre-injury state to post-injury after receiving anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) surgery in the Division 1 collegiate population. Studies 1 and 2 analyzed CMJ data of 290 Division 1 collegiate athletes (165 male). Study1 revealed that age, sex, body mass and peak power explained 87% of the variation observed in CMJ jump height performance. Study 2, in addition to power from the CMJ test, utilized FFM body composition data via total body scans from Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry. The data from study 2 showed that 81% of the variation seen in power could be predicted by age, sex and fat free mass. Study 3 evaluated healthy, preinjury data in 18 Division 1 collegiate athletes (10 male) and compared power and FFM differences 6 months following ACLR. This study revealed significant power and FFM asymmetries following ACLR at the 6-month testing timepoint.

Book excerpt: "Introduction: Females are 4 to 6 times more likely to sustain an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury than their male counterparts during running and cutting sports, such as soccer. This sex disparity is thought to result from altered lower limb neuromuscular control that females present when fatigued at the end of practice or games. Yet, current fatigue monitoring techniques typically vary in their reliability, applicability and efficiency. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of the countermovement jump (CMJ) to quickly and reliably monitor fatigue in female soccer athletes. Methods: Twenty-two (age: 19.3 ± 1.1 yrs, ht: 1.7 ± 7.2 m, and wt: 61.9 ± 7.7 kg) females from an NCAA Division I soccer team had peak isokinetic strength and power and specific ground reaction metrics of a CMJ including: peak and rate of force/power development, impulse, and reactive strength index modified, quantified immediately before off-season training, and immediately prior to- and following the completion of the competitive season. Results: Quadriceps and hamstrings peak torque and average power increased following the competitive season for both limbs compared to pre-season and pre-training time points (all: p 0.05). During the CMJ, maximum rate of power production and peak force were greater at the post-season compared to pre-training (p = 0.023 and p = 0.007, respectively) and pre-season (p = 0.024 and p = 0.044, respectively) time points, while peak power was greater at post-season compared to the pre-training (p = 0.018) time point.
